It will soon be needed M. B. Brown has a sprained ankle as the result of trying to catcha fly. The only stock shipments yesterday were 20 cars cattle, 626 head, to Chicago, via the C. & R. I Enough money has easily heen raised for the purchase of a large sheet banner for the Blaine ana Logan club. The Lineoln officials yesterday rather snubbed the Council Bluffs mayor. They did not even let him know they were in the city. The G. A. R.are requested to meot at their hall this morning at 8 o'clock, to attend the funeral of their late member, Orson Lee. One of the boarders at Stewart’s on Main street, complains that his room mate has skipped out with his watch and some olothing. The creck has cut into the bank behind on DOWNING A DESPERADO. The Exciting Captare of @ Man Charged ith Shooting & Sherifl A Flourish of Kevolvers and a Lively Chase, For some time the officers have been on the look-out for one James Reynolds, who was wanted for shooting Sheriff George B. McCord, at Marshalltown, July 224, the particulars of which were given in the telegraphic columns at the time. McCord was attempting to arrest him for robbery when the shot was fired, striking the sheriff and inflicting a wound which may prove fatal, though he is still alive, A reward of €500 was immediately of- fered by the sheriff’s association and £500 by Marshall county, and descriptions of Reynolds scattered over the state. Yestorday a man came in on a C. & 1 W. freight train who ncted Jsuspiciously. He disposed of two silver watches on the train, and on arriving here the railway boys put the officers on his track. Officer Towns looking over the fellow concluded to arrest him asa suspicious character. Officer Hurloy was also watching him, and as Towns was taking the fellow to tho polico station, Hurloy followed behind. In passing through the alley leading from Main streot to the oty building, the fel- low was a little behind Officor Towns, and began reaching for a_ back pocket in a suspicions way, which strengthened Hurley's beliof that he was abont to pull a revolver. In an instant tho fellow turned and run, Towns_after him. The chaso was made_unto Washington street, and Towns fired at the flecing prisoner, but failed to hit him. The fellow drew his revolver as he run, and Hurley, cut- ting up the alley to Market streat, foll in i just behind the man as he tho now opera house, 5o that it lnuku;:n PR e e L if somo furthor protection would soon be | ® CURE T BT 0 needed there. There was a lively row at the Phwnix saloon last night. Three fellows were badly clubbed and bruised and were landed in the cooler. The spiritualists did not have thelr social and dance Saturday night, it being postponed on account of bad weather, until next Saturday evening.; % Complaint is made that straw and refuse is thrown into the creek back of Mace Wise's and other stables, and being washed down fill up the bed of the creck. Cocke & Morgan are preparing to soon move out of the new opera house build- ing now used by Laing. The change will bs made about the first of the month, The man Marshall, charged with beat- ing his wife, is to have a hearing before Justice Schurz at 2 o'clock this after- noon, he having taken a change of venue from Vaughan. In the police court yesterday Nick Hammerman and George Fisher were each fined for being drunk, and Frank Phillips and James Regan each fined for disturbing the peace. Those who want to sign the muster roll of the Blaine and Logan club, can find lists at Tue Bee office, Nonpareil, and the Herald offices. ~ All republicans should enroll themselves promptly. Mayor Vaughan, by the consent of at- torneys Mynster and James, set Mr. Hatherell with ten men at work on 1ndian creek yesterday to give temporary protection to the citizens from overflows. Dr, L. D. McKinlay, of Neola, writes to democrats in this city for some sort of a record of M. G. Griffin, so that he can meet the latter's appeal to Irishmen to vote for Blaine. Rather small business all around, The man arrested here to-day on the charge of having abducted a child from Sioux City, will probably be discharged, it appearing that the parents let him have the girl on his promise to educate her and support her as his own daughter. Charles E. Taylor since being tossed around by the lightning, has become so large that his house is not big enough to hold him, consequently Mr. T. is having an addition of two rooms put on his house on Sixth street and Ninth avenue, The alley in the rear of Kiel's hotel and running south is in a horrible con- dition and has been 80 some time. The contract for paving the alley was lot a month or more ago, and still nothing Is done about it. It needs cleanliness be- fore it needs paving stones, Mike Nolan, who is running a tem- perance saloon, has been complained of for not taking out a license under the council's famous or infamous *‘pop ordi- nance, requiring $400 for the privilege of selling temperance drinks, and a bond not to sell lemonade to minors or drunkards. The case is to come up this morning. De Vol & Wright's basement was flooded Saturday night. Holes had been left in the street, where the sewerage gang had been at work, and the promise was given that they would be filled up Saturday, It was not done, and as a consequence water run in, compelling the firm to move all the stoves they had stored in the basement. Yesterday morning a party of gentle- men frow Lincoln arrived in the city to make an examination of the waterwor! They were shown the works by Birkia. bine, and all expressed themselyes highly pleased, The party consisted of Mayor R, E. Moore, W. J, Cooper, Chas, Lyne, Chas, West, J. R, Webster and H. P, Law, members of the Lincoln council; C. B, Beach, the chief of police; Ed. 8, Royse, engineer; L. Hurley in turn drew his revolver, and catching up with him tripped him as he was running. As the fellow tumbled, Hurloy wrenched the revolver away from him and tossed it to one side, the ham- mer of the revolver catching in Hurley'’s pants at the knee in the scuffle tearing a hole. Hurley then covering the man with his revolver, was appealed to with: “I wouldn't shoot you, so don’t shoot me.” He held him there until Oflicer Towns came up and the fellow was taken to the station. An examination showed he answered the description of the would be murderer of Sheriff McCord. He had on his per- son another silver watch and about three dollars in money. In the chass he threw away something, and Willio Vaughan, the mayor's son, who was among those who were running after the fellow, found it. 1t proved to be a regular burglar's chisel, rusty but very sharp. The fellow had little or nothing to say and was locked securcly in the steel cell, and the authorities at Marshalltown notified by telegraph. The intense excitement at Marshall- town over the shooting of the sheriff has been such that it has been common talk that if Reynolds is ever brought back there he will be lynched. e —— FEMININE FICKLENESS. An Oskaloosa Husband Canges the Arrest of His Wife in This City, She in Turn Complains of Him for Trying to Kill Her, On Saturday there arrived in this city from Oskaloosa & young man named J. W. Havens, who formerly lived here, and was employed in Robie’s bakery, Those who frequented the skating rink last season will remember him as the one who had & most peculiar swing as if mowing grass, and as having been cos- tumed as ‘‘the devil” at the great mas- querade. Havens came back here to hunt up his wife, a woman whose maiden name was Jennie Walters, and whose home was in Hollyville. She has gained some notoriety before, and has been undor the aliases of Kittie Jackson, Kittie Holmes, Jennie Dayhuff, and Jennie Havens, It will be remembered by the readers of Tue Bkk that she was arrested the latter part of May by Con- stable Wesley for skipping out with quite a sum of money belonging to Mr. Craig, in whose bakery she was employed., At that time Mr, Craig was away from home, and the woman when sho skipped went to Oakaloosa, where she met Havens, with whom she was formerly acquainted. Havens thought that she was the wifo of Mr, U, Dayhuff, but on that she was not he married her. They have been living in Oskaloosa since, tho case of the Cralg money having beou settled. According to Havens' state- mont, about two wecks ago she told him that she wanted to go on a to her old home in Holleyville, and he con- sented, but instead of going to her old home, she came to this city, and he gotting track of her came after ler, and was satisfied that she was living with her old friend Dayhuff, who keeps a tomper- ance saloon on lower Broadway, and who lives south of Rapp's place. He gained an interview with her there, It was & stonny interview, Havens' statement of it is that she grabbed & revolver and was going to shoot him, and he took it away from her, whilo she claims that he was the agressor. Yeaterdey the troub'e wa) drazgelinto court, She had Havens arrested for assault, while he had her and Dayhutf arrestod for adu'tery. The cases against the woman and Dayhufl’ were continved until to-morrow, they giving bail of 8250 each, Havens was placed bond to appear Thursday afternoon to un swer to the charges of gesault, and assault with intent to do great bodily barm, #ll the cases being tried before Jnstice Vaughan. Polltcal Pratile, The republicans are not the only ones fiixing up slates, having settled upon renominating Con- | gressman Pusey, are turning their atten tion to the smaller names on the ticket. It is talked that William ¥. Patton, s always lived here, will be the demceratic nominee for county clerk. He has lately been serving as assistant city clerk, and has done a large portion of the work of that oftice, A. P. Cramer, of Avoca, is reaching out for the county recorder’s plum John Jay FKraney has an eye out for the district attorneyship, and if he cannot get that, will probably bo contented with heing justice of the peace Judge Aylesworth is conceded to be the coming democratic nominee for district judge if ho wants it. ~ Walter I, Phelps, of Atlantic, is talked of as the one who will be groomed for a race against Judge Lyman for the head of the circuit court. r. Lally, of Denison, is looked onas the probable nominee for district attor- ney. Justico N. Schurz, although not anxious for renomination, will doubtless yield to the pressure, and if so will get many republican voters to support him also, for that position. Squire Briggs is also talked off as favorablo for one of the justice chairs. For supervirors 8. G. Underwood and Judge A. W, Wyman, both of Keg Creek, aro talked of, with chances now in favor ot Underwood. Mr. Hogt, of Knox township, is also named. It is anid that the anti-Cleveland democrats are to rally about M. G. Griffin_for justice of the peace, W. R. Vaughan is glancing toward the nomination as one of the electors. There will be many changes in the state between now and full, but this is part of the gossip now going the rounds in the democratic camp, B PERSONAL, 0. A resolution was passed instructing a special committae of three aidermen to employ at least thirty men and as many teams as necessary to open all ditches to drain the flooded district west of the creek, and the engineer instructed to employ a surveyor to immediately pro- ceod to open a series of ditches to give temporary relief to the flooded district. Mr. Kinnehan, of the labor organiz- ation, asked for permanent relief from the overflow of the creek. An ordinance was passed ordering the following streets brought up to urade within ten days: On Fifth avenue from Tenth street to Union avenue, On Sixth avenue from Tenth street to Indian Croek. On Seventb avonue from Tenth street to Indian Creck. On Ninth street from Fifth avenue to Tenth stroet. On Tenth stroet from Eight to Twelfth streets. On failure of the same the city clerk was authorized to advertise for bids, The city attorney was instructed to condemn the right of way according to | 3:80-4: the Williams plan sowerago. Several petitions were presented and roferred to appropriate committees. The city attorney advised that the claim of N.
