THE STORIES ABOUT A DIVISION IN THE RANKS DE- NIED—THE OLD AND YOUNG DEMOCRACY UNITED— WHAT MBSSKS. NORRIS AND BRLL SAY. ‘The statement has been published that the local democracy are at loggerheads over the arrange- ments for the Cleveland and Hendricks ratification meeting, which is to be held here in September. It Asusyerted that the younger element in the party claim the right to control the ratification arrange- ments and take the lead tn the coming campaign, While the old “wir horses,” who have kept to the front all these years aud thalutatued an Organiza- Uon, will be Invited totake back seats. This breach, 44s’ suid, has widened to such an extent between the two stings of tie party that the younzer ele- ment declare that unless they are given tue mun- agement they will refuse to unite with the others, aiid will get up a ratillcution of thelr own. ‘These two elements are represeuted by the Jackson deun- ocratlc association and Ue District central commit tee, ‘WHAT MR. NORRIS SAYS. Mr. John E. Norris, who has been the president of the former association for sixteen years, in con- versation this morning with a Stax man, said: “It there 1s any snarl ip the District democracy I do not know It I don’t think that exists. Pierce Bell, one of the members of the District central committee and chairman of the late convention, said toa Stak reporter when asked in regard to this alleged split in the local democ- Tacy: “It fs all nonsense to make such a statement: in regard to the District democracy. Of course, there may be individuals who feel Sore about one | Unng or iuiother, but as a whole the District demo- crats are united. The central committee, of which ‘Thomas J. Luttrell 1s chairman, has secured head- quarters over Lewis J. Johuson’s bank, which they will occupy during the coming campaign. The Jackson association and the central committee have both agreed upon some Ume about the middie ‘of September to hold te ratification meeting. ‘The committee will issue a circular to the clubs in the various districts caliing upon them to ory for the campaign. ‘These clubs will elect their own officers, and we will alldwell together in unity until Cleveland ts elected.” Who will have charge of the arrangements for the ratification meeting?” asked the reporter. ‘Representatives from all the democratic organ- izations in the District will meet for the pene of Making arrangements. It ts intended to have a big demonstration. Invitations will be sent to organ- izations in Virginia and Maryland to Ucipate, as Was done four years ago, and the demonstration will be a grand success.” ———__ What Gen. Longstreet Says.
