The Dead Body of a Man Ashore Near the Bridge, Bronght P, Saturday afterncon, Z. Adame, who lives on the bottom near the U. P. bridge, while out on the river in a boat, saw tho dead body of a man floating down tho stream. He rowed out toward it but tho swift current carriod it by him out of his reach. He called the atten- tion of two other men to it who were in & boat below him in the stream. Thoy finally succeeded in towing the floater ashore, Coroner Maul was notified, who held an inquest near where tho man was taken ashore, The body weighed about 140 pounds and was in the first stage decomposition. Nothing was found upon the man to identify him. In the pocket was a buckskin wallet conlaining $1.35. On the ring finger of his left hand was a small gold ring surmounted by a double heart. His clothing consisted of a dark colored vest, blue checked shirt and jean breeches. IHow long the body had lain in the water could not be determ- ined. The conditions that cause decom- position being 80 various that nothing definite could be ascertained. Through the left leg of his trousers was thrust a fishermen’s spear which was still clinging to hia clothing. Who ho was is only a matter of conjecture. s thought he was a man_named Willinm Oakes who was drowned while on a jour- ney by boat with two companions from Sioux City to Tekamah. This party of three when nearly opposito Tekamah was drawh into an eddy and Oakes who at- tempted to swim ashore being overcome by the current sank to rise no more. At the inquest only those wero sworn who helped to draw the body to shore. They of course knew nothing of the manner of his death, and the jury re- turned a verdict of death from causes unknown.
