Mr. Covalt, the guardian of Bayliss' park, is making quito a_collection of old and rare coins, many of which have been given him by those visiting the park, It is Made AmongsStrangers but Hon- ored by Tello™-Veterans: His Hea (loss Relatives, The body of the unfortunate B. P. (reiger, who cut his throat here lrst week, was laid away in the cemetery yesterday. His father-in‘law, C. P, Smith, of Ross- ville, 1lL, telegraphed Coroner Connell last Friday to get the body ready for shipment east, and that he would come on immediately, Smith did arrive, and from him it wes learned that Geiger's story was correct about his having Iately gone out into Nebratka with his brothers to look up 'land, and that his brothers returned while he concluded to stay. He had a team, about $200 in money, and some other property. Ac- cording to Smith’s statement, Gieiger had not been drinking for some time, but that the probable cause of his insanity was a sunstroke that he received lest year. The father-in-law seemed to be more arvious to know what had become of Geiger's propetty than what would become of the body, and seemed quite disappointed that no property was found. He enquired the expense of sending the remains home, and learning that it would cost $100, craket and all, he con- cluded not to take the body but leave it here for strangers to> buy. Ho seemed to be surprised because the G. R., of which Goiger was a member, would not pay any insurance, the organization hav- ing no such fund for its deceased merm- bers, In factho acted so penuriously and henrtlessly as to excite much right- eous indignation. Abe Lincoln Post, G. A. R., learning that Geiger was an old soldier, and a member of the post at Poseville, 1!, took the matter in hand, while Smith went on his way home again, not even showing enough respect to remain to the funeral, The old veterans turned out in goodly numbers yesterday morning, and in the rain andjmud marched to the cemetery, bearing with them the body of the stranger but brother-veteran, and there gave him a soldier’s hburial, the acting the purchaser will be presented with the same, We have adopted for the present this system of advertising because it gives our patrons instead of the news: papers the five per cent. which it cost us, Clothing retailed at wholesale prices. The Best Sport Had at the Drving Park, Ever The races which are to take place this week at the driving park will draw to this city a large number of visitors, and doubtless will be more generally attended by the citizens than on any previous meeting. The horses are nearly all here, and ovei y arrangement is made for having the most successful and enjoyablo meot- ing ever given here. The events to- morrow wi'l be the 2:43 and 2:20 cle wses, The entries at this meeting number about 120, and among these are some of the best horses in the country, £o that there cannot but be excellen sport. Arrangements have been made so that those who come from Omaha can, if they choose to do so, return at night on the dummy train. The judges selected for the meeting are A. J. There were about fifty present at the preliminary meeting Fri- day night, and there shall Le {.ice ti~t number to-night. The primaries for selection of delegates to the republican county convention will be held this evening. The county con- vention is to be here Wednesday after- noon at the com’ honse, and the judicial district convention the following after- noon at the same place. The first ward republican caucus meet this evening at Weis & Clausen’s store to select five delegates; the second ward at the city building to select nine delegates; the third ward at Justice Abbott's office to select six; the fourth ward at the court house to select nine, The feot that a brutal dog-figt was to take place Satnrday morning was known quite generally, and to the city authori- ties and polico most cert:inly, and yet no efforts were made to prevent it, and while there is some talk about complaint to be filed there will probably be nothing done about it. Alico Hager has commenced action for divorce from Ben Hager, to whom she was married in 1872, She claims that he has treatcd her cruelly, at one time hit- ting her with a chair, another time draw- ing a revolver on her, and another time driving her and the three children out of the house in the night. The new city jailer does not propose to have the records tampered with as they ‘were while his predecessor was in charge, He keeps them locked up,a virtual conces- sion that the books were previously tams pered with, Why does the council com- mittee ignore the charges made by the late jailer about not only the books, but the stealing of articles about the jail? Folks shouldn't be too ready to jump at bargains offered by transient fellowe, who to-day are and to-morrow are not, espaclally when such goods as cigars, jewelry, clothing and cutlery are offered at fabulously low prices, Unless one has an expert knowl:dge of such goods and is a sharp buyer, a safer chance is offered by dealing with home merchants, who are here day ofter day, and month after month, and if anything is wrong with the goods it can be made right. A young man named Conrad Thomp- son was arrested Saturday night on a charge of fraudulently collecting some bills duo W. T. Braun, in whose employ he used to be, ‘Lhe young man skipped out when approached about the matter, and the officers gave him a wild chase down Main street. Jailor Schonz chanced to be coming the other way and the young wan running into his arms was chaplain of the post, Wm. Sears, officiat- ing. Thus poor Geiger was given a de- cent burial, and the honors to which he was entitled, although given by strangers, while those related by blood and by mar- 70 were keeping at a distance, ,show- ing apparent disregard. TRAIN ROBBERY. ° How Passengers on the Night Dummy Train are Relieved of TheirDimes, The manner in which the Union Pacific has always gouged o3 much as possible from those who have occasion to use the bridge either for travel or for freight, is familiar to many, but the latest bit of cheek is the manner in which money is extortad from passengers on the night dummy train. The regular fare across the bridge is twenty- five cents, but the urifortunate who has occasion to take the night dummy train is obligcd to pay sixty cents, unless per- chance he has gone to the office during the day and purchascd a ticket. The Omaha ticket office is not open when the train starts out, and no chance is given to the passengers to get tiokots, and yet this makes no difference. The conductor fosces the pessenger, and either sixty cents or be Lounccd from the train. On last Saturday night’s train there was 71 most & war of passengers. One man wes 80 indignant at the gouge that he abso- lutely refused to pay more than the regular tee of twenty-five cents, but when the conductor stopped the train and was going to put him off in the dark- ness and mud of theriver bank, he weak- ened and gave up. One lady had but twenty-five cents, and after a ‘‘scene” sho wan allowed £o remain on the train.
