GRAIN AND REVIEW OF THE WEEK, Cnicaco, April 26,—The rise in wheat and ‘corn the past week was as remarkablo and rapid as the tumble two weeks ago. The market opened strong the first of the week. There was an active demand for wheat from frightened shorts and new born bulls who bought heavily on reported damage to grow- ing crops by late storms, firmer cables, and heavy purchases by Kershaw, supposably on account of Armour. Traders tumbled over -each other ip their efforts to buy, The June optionsold at 90 and 91c at the same time in the pit. Dows and Walker ware especially prominent as purchasers, tuking 500,000 bush- .ol lots freely. Jiverything seomed to indicate #boom, whon Adams, Kent, Loster and other iheavy longs took advantage of the opportuni- ty to unload biglines and many of the shorts having covered the feeling became easier, iHero the secietary of the board of trade posted the visible supply figures, which showed a decrease of over one and ahalf mil- {lion bushels in wheat, aud nearly as much in corn. This was the signal for & bull raid by a cligue of strong aperators headed by Hobbs, Wright, Cudahy and Spense. Private cables werexeceived at he same time, reporting for eign markets stronger and higher. Immediately tho shorts were in u panic and awmid much ex citement uuder a rush to cover values ad- vauced.over 4¢ from the lowest point. Later asag was caused by she unloading of the syn- dicate, who were evideutly working only for a scalp, but this was offset hy the posted state- ment that cable reports of wheat on passage from Australia were about two million bushels larger ¢hn the actusl shipments which prac- tically zeduced the visible supply to the ex- tent nawed. The situstion Bow appears eatly improved, the export demand hasing increased muterially with a probability chut the visible supply from this time forward will show a more rapid decrease than formerly, and now that navigation has opened reasonabie rates of freiekt are ussured The June optiou is solling at a suificient preminm to allow eap- italists to carry the lurge stocks through to June 1st, s» there will be no particular pressure frow cash stuff. The wpring is cold @od backward, aud reports from winter wheat wections ay to the growing crops are nob as en- couragiog as a month ago. Corn has ruled comparatively quiet, sympa- thizing with the fluctuations in wheat, but only within a very narrow range, ‘Lrading has been modarate with a fair volume of outeida buylng, chiefly from the interior, The crowd here us well as seaboard speculators are very WHEAT—Strong and higher; winter, 7s 9d @ 8s 3; spring, 7s bd @ 7s 9d.
