A Woman Deserts Her Twin Babies Only Three Weeks Old, The Police After Her, Abouta month ago a woman giving her name as Nora J. Smith arrived in this city and rented rooms of John, the Chinaman, on North Main street. About a week after her arrival she gave birth to twins, both girls, and securing the ser- vices of a woman t> take care of her, has been living there since. A short time ago she placed one of the babes in the care of a nurse on Upper Broadway, and on Thursday last she made some sus- picious moves as if about to akip out of town. The police were informed and they watched the woman so closely that she could not get away very well, but yesterday morning she disappeared. The officers learned that a woman of her description left on the Rock Island train, and it was supposed that she had started back for Des Moines. Mayor Vaughan at neon telegraphed to Stuart to head her off, and haye the woman arrested on the arrival of the train at that place. The wires were down and the message could not be sent until about 3 o’clock, an hour after the train had passed Stuart. By somo strange vieco of stupidity on the part of tho employes at he telegraph oftice, the fatal delay was not made known to the mayor, and it was not until late in the afternoon, when making the inquiry for an answer, that he learned the facts. Ho then telegraphed to Des Moines, but s the message would mnot reach there until after the arrival of the train, he had little hope of catching the woman. It is useless to try to use words to ex- press the indignation felt at so cruel a desertion of two little babes, who are thus left by their own mother among strangers and without friends or care. 1t is to be hoped that she will be brought to the front in some way. During her stay hero she is said to have received monsy from some one in Des Moines to pay the necessary expenses, and it is surmised that the malo partner whe ought to share the responsibility is in the capital city, and she has perhaps joined him there. She is described as a woman about 25 years of age, light complexion, blue ©yes, brown hair, short in_stature, large nose, rather homely, sunk between the eyes, and some false teeth, a blue worsted dress and drab dohlman, trimmed with brown, a black hat with no trimmings, a brown veil. e Baby Osrriages. Chap- man, the retiring manager of the rink. ‘The benefit is to take place next Wednes- day evening, and not this avening.
