The District sub-committee. considering the Fiedler resolution held a short session to hear the report of Mr. Fiedler and Mr. Yalden upon their examination of the methads of boct:-keeping in use at the District auditor's office. Mr. Yalden ‘said that he never In hts life saw a more perfect system than that of the it auditor of the Dis- wice aud. ee Mi me fo fraud or mistakes woul e impossible, le fa, however, that the accounts in the auditor's and allthe finan- cial departments of the District. ernment, prior to the present auditor's taxing , are in’ a ter- rible condition. ‘The report states that the accounts are in such a condition that, nothing short of a thorough investi- ation could disclose the extent of the irregularities. in the short Ume spent in looking over the books, tue exper’ had found things that led him to believe beyond a doubt that THERE HAD BEEN FRAUDS from which the people of the District had suffered greatly. The accounts clearly showed peculation, he sald. The irregularities seemed to extend over ‘& period of elght or nine and all the accounts were in great confusion, and there were many sus- picious things. Mr. Fiedler said to a Star. that he had no idea that the present. Commissioners were in any way responsible, as it did not that the Irreguiarities had extended toto their term, but that the people of the District had evidently suf- fered losses, and the matter should be examined Into and corrected. If the investigation should dis- close frauds and discover the responsible he said they should be prosecuted and there be a thorough renovation under the system now in operation. ‘The sub-committee will moet again on Wednes- day to decide whether or not they will recommend an investigation.
