MINOR MENTION, Additional looal on seventh page. Cheap railrond tickets at Bushnell's, Buya revolver of Cooper & MeGee and make it warm for the burglars. Fie moro conversions are reported at the revival meetings of tho Baptist church, Tho whooping cough has sadly do- creased the attendance at the Denison schools. The Methodists are to dedicate a new church in Defiance next Sunday. Rev. Dr. Austin, of Denison, is to preach the dedicatory sermon. “Pork and beans a la Bostonne" is the way one Council Bluffs restaurant has it on the bill of fare. Talk about Boston a8 putting on literary and linguistic airs! The Crawford County Fair association clected as its officers for this year, W. A, McHenry, president; 8. B. Groek, vice president; Henry Schuntler, secre- tary; E. 8. Plimpton, treasurer. C. T. Bowen telegraphs from Boston that two more dynamos will be shipped from there for Council Blufls next week, 8o that there is agood prospect fora speedy starting up of more electric lights here. The gymnasium started under the auspices of the Young Men's Christian association, and which is to occupy a hall on the upper floor of Shugart's block, has secured a membership of 133 at 5 a year, and others will doubtless join, John Evers has contributed to the Home for the Friendless an order for $5 worth of meat, Jacob Appel 3 in groceries, “‘a friend” one cord of wood, Mrs. J. T. Stewart an elegant bedstead and springs, *‘a friend,” two new suits of clothing. ’ 2 Rev. J. G. Lemen will deliver at Glen- wood to-night his first lecture of thesame series which he delivered in this city with 80 much effect, and which excited so much interest here. The Glenwood peoplewill doubtless find in these lectures much to interest and much to instruct. The series is to close with a lecture on Poe, a lecture which he has delivered at several places with great success. The Y. M. C. A. has made arrange- ments for a reception for their now gen- eral secretary, Harry Curtis, who is ex- pected to arrive next Saturday. The reception is to be held at the Ogden house parlors next Tuesday evening and it is expected that the occasion will be in keeping with the general fooling of welcome to 80 worty a man, coming here to take so important a position, As soon as the fire alarm was sounded yesterday morning the pumping works were notified by telephone, and at once there was 110 pounds of pressure put on the mains. The hose carts turned out pretty lively, too, it being less than four minutes from the sounding of the alarm to the time when all was in readiness to put a stream on the fire. It begins to look as if the city was gotting in protty good shape for' fires, Some new hose and a nsw fire alarm system would help out, though. A man giving his name as Sullivan, and also known as Haley, was before the superior court yesterday on a charge of disorderly conduct. He had been out to adance and eeeing the sights, until it was too late for him to go to bed, 8o he wanted to occupy a chair by the Pacific house heater until daylight came. Officer Hayes arrested him, and gave him lodg- ing in jail, but he begged off in court yesterday. He hails from Neola, and #ays his business is that of a traveling tinker, John Green, of Weston, was called into <court yesterday for cruelty to animals, He left » horse standing all night ex- posed to'the cold while he took in the town. The horse was taken up yester- ‘day morning and placed in the Ogden shown that it cares nothing for the com. fort or convenience of passengers between the two cities. The numerous burglaries remind us that our doors and windows should be more securaly fastoned. Cooper & Me- Geo have the necessary implements. Call on them at 41 Main streot. LEAVES FROM THE RED 0AK, Fire Destroys a Handsome Residence —A Lively Altercation Be- tween Newspaper Men, — Rep OAK, Janusry 23.—The C., B, & Q, havo fitted up one of the neatest and most inviting little hostelrics in the state, called the Depot hotel, and have trans- ferred the dining car cook and crew to it, and if your highness or the friends of your highness should come this way and wish to indulge yourselves in the luxury of a square, clean meal, givo them a call. At six o'clock this morning the ‘“‘fire whistle' startled the drowsy denizens of the town, and the cry of fire rang out on the frosty air. It was found that the residence of Harrison Silcott was in flames, caused by the breaking of a coal oil lamp. He lost his house and con- tents, and came near losing his life. The lamp held nearly a quart of oil, and was accidentally knocked over, The oil ran out on the floor in a blaze. He made the mistake of throwing on it a bucket of water, which only spread the oil and the flames. When will peoplo learn that water on blazing oil only adds fuel to the flame? By the way, this firo was the causo of a joke on company, No. 2. Said No. 2 prides itself upon being the crack com- pany. When the alarm was given they sprang from their beds and started to theira;: (Oh thste way they fell in with No. 1's hose cart, and thinking that their own cart was ahead they took hold and helped No. 1. When they reached the fire, lo and behold, No. 2's cart was in the engine house, and they had to “*heel it” back for their cart. ~All that one has to do to get up a_first-class row is to ask a member of No. 2 when he joined No. 1, Court is in session and as a result the granger element is largely represented in town. We came near having a *‘bluddy” row last week between two of our ropresen- tatives of the ‘‘gelorious” press, Dr. Sperry of The Telephone, and Snyder, of The Express. Sperry put in his list of subscribers (sworn to of course) and Snyder put in his, and The Telephone oumumgumd The Express by a few copies. When the said Snyder intimated that the editor of The Telephone had an elastic oath that ceuld be stretched quite a number of copies. Thereupon The Telephone editor went in a la_Sullivan, but the board of supervisors interfered and prevented bloodshed. The health of the county is such as to discourage the doctors, and the expres- sion is patent with them that it is *‘dem- nition"” healthy. SoArER, e Mrs, A, Bryan, drossmaker. _Cutting a specialty, 604 S. Main st., upjstairs, e — The Bridge Bill. The full text of the bill introduced by Congressman Pusey, providing for a wagon and railroad bridge over the Mis- souri, joining Council Bluffs and Omaha, was given in yesterday's BRE as a matter of news, without note or comment. The Nonpareil, which has always echoed merely the wish of the Union Pacific, and which may therefore be judged as doing 80 now, fairly howls till the veins stand out as far as they can seeing that a brass collar surrounds it's neck. It speaks of ““Bill” Pusey, and avows that, *If this boastful anti-monopolist is really the au- thor of this measure, or if he really favors it in its present form, or in any other form, then he is no friend of Council Bluffs. A congressman from Council Bluffs who would favor that scheme at this time, is no friend of Iowa, and really the worst enemy the city ever had or could have. If this city was over more hoastly betrayed in all its past history, we have no knewl- edgo of either the betrayer or the time when such botrayal ocourred.” This outburst may be because among the names of the incorporators appear some which have the same effect on John Chapman that red rag doos on a bull. The fact is that thero is a diversity of opinion on the bridge question in Council Bluffs. Some aro opposed to any kind of a bridge. Others want a wagon bridge, but do not want any railway at- fachment. Others want ‘a combined bridge if the railway part can be properly ocontrolled. Each of theso have respect- ablo support, and the holders of these various ~ opinions are certainly on- titled to as much respect as 18 & man in whose hands chance has placed a lead pencil, and who has been provided with a stool in a printing -house stable and the proprietor notified ‘that when the owner claimed the animal o send him down to interview City Mar- shal Jackson. The interviow resulted in his being brought before the bar. His bill at court was §5.85, and Green will probably be more careful hereafter. This evening there 18 to be a concert and ball at Dohany's hail, for tho bene- it of John Brawn, who was injured at the Masonic temple, Tho cause is a most worthy one, the man being almost a stranger here, and having a family on his hands, who need the support which his industry would have afforded them - had it not been for his unfortunate fall, The tickets are only fifty cents, and the entertainment to be given by the Man- nerchor and Turn Verein will fully merit the required expenditure of time and - money, while the proceeds devoted to such s charitable cause will do great - good at the same time, ~ Yesterday morning's dummy train brought over from Omaha a number of office. The bridge question is too im- E:mne. one to be greeted by a mere nd. 1t is entitled to careful, earnest thought, and open, frank discussion, 1t will bo remombered that, two years ago, this matter came up aud was con- sidered by a committee chosen fromeach city, The Omaha members of this com- mittee wanted a reilway and wagon bridge, The Council Bfixfll members wanted oaly a wagon bridge, and saw in the ullw:ly part of the plan a scheme to help Omaha and injure Council Bluffs, The Omaha gentlemen then agreed to unite in trying to geta wagon bridge, without any railway part. Then the Council Bluffs members of the commit- tee were divided in opinion, some of them goi in for a rail way and wagon bridge. The Omaha mo: shown, and refused to join in the railway part, sticking to the agreement for a wagon bridge only, and a bill was accord- ingly prepared, and in due time was lost sight of. . Buch is the history of the case, show- ing the variance of ‘opinions in Couneil Blufls. The bill is not to be passed in & day, nor the bridge built in a week, and hence there is time for careful considera- grumbling passenger, who shivered and - shook with the cold, and between chat. tering teeth gave vent to unholy expres. #ions in regard to a corporation which - would not provide fires to heat the pas- uger cars. There have been many of complaints of late, and cold care ! - in keeping with the polioy of & cow. | pany which keeps its depot doors locked, . g waiting on &lutuulnal tion and free disoussion, and no need, whatever, for the U, P, organ to howl 80 lustily at the mere suggestion of a s:ulnbinm{ bridge. e ——— We still have a fow choice heating stoves which we are closing out at a great sacrifice, Cooper & McGee, 41 Main street, e — Private lessons on china given by 8. The Offces St on fhe Bunt ond No Arrest, A Residence and a Grocery Store Visited. The Iatest reported case of burglary is that of Dr. Lawrence's house. The thief failod to procure any plunder, but it is only to be wished that the police would show one-half the diligence in hunting for burglars that the burglars do for plunder. This fellow gained an entrance to the house by climbing up onto the roof of the kitchen, and from there reaching a second story window. After ransacking tho upper part of the house, he came down stairs, and was in Mrs, Lawrence's sleeping room. The doctor was away from home, and Mrs, Lawrence awakening was naturally startled, and as she started up to strike a light, the burglar whispered, ‘Don’t you daro to strike a match.” He then cautioned her not to make a noise, but she sprang to the window, raised it, and yelled. The fellow hurriedly left the room, and after trying the front exit, and not being ablo to get out that way, rushed back to the rear of the house and skipped eut. AFTER GROCERIES, An attempt was also made to get away with plunder from Maltby's grocery atore, The clerk, named Frank Ru- dolph, came to the store very early to start up the fire before going to break- fast, Ylu heard a noise in the store, and soon a fellow skipped out of the rear, a sound of smashing glass accompanying his hasty exit. It appears that the burglar had broken out a pane of glass in the rear of the store, and thus gained an entrance, and was just at work at the till when the ar- rival of the clerk frightened him, In his hurried exit he found the opening he had made in entering a little to small for the occasion, and so hastily smashed out tho other pane, thus making plenty of room for a hurried getting out. He made good his escape. SNEAK THIEVES, 4 They continue to do more or less work. Two colored fellows entered Davidsor’s store, and while one walked backward and forward the other engaged the atten- tion of the lady clerk, the only clerk in the store at the time, the darkey pretending that he wanted to buy a pair of stockings. After the two had gone out a piece of dress goods, which had been lying on tho counter had disap- 8. A.
