Brooklyn Politicians Making a Bee- Line for Pews, eat Auotion Sale in Plymouth Church, The £ New York Journal, »/an. Sth To-night the an. nual !ful-' of the pews and chairs of Plymou'h Church will take place in that widely-~nown structure, and the announcement is 11ado that there will be “no postponement o account of the weather.” The sale alwaj's causes more or less of a stir in church eircles, owing to the jealously of Mr. Beecher's popularity existibg among certain clergy- men. This year more interest is felt in the salo than ever, because of the report that a number of ambitious politicians propose to purchase pews in the hope that connection with Plymouth church will advance their political interests. “Mayor Low could not have been ro- elected without the aid of Mr. Beecher and Plymouth church,” said Constable- at-Largo Giddings yesterday. *“Plymouth church defeated Franklin Woodruff when he ran for Mayor, and 1 tell you it's a noble institution to belong to. I'm going to have a pow even if it costs mo £500." “Mr. Beecher is more popular now than he ever was,” said Mr, H. S. Weld, the philanthropic clerk of the church in conversation with a reporter. **Quite a handsome sum is realized yearly from the rental of the pows. In 1881, for instance, $43, 312 was received for the pews. We hope to realize from 35,000 to 845,000 this year." H' B. Claflin, the dry-goods prince, has paid as highas $700 for a pew, S. V. White has paid 8675, Augustus Storrs has paid §500. Numbers of pews will bring from §200 to $300 to-night. A professional auctioneer conducts the salo and Mr. Beecher is usually presont to stimulate the buyers with i"’lis charac- teristic bright sayings and bright witti- cisms. “‘Should there be any bids from pro- fessional peliticians to morrow night, several of our wealthy membors will be on hand to bid up into the thousands,” said one of the church deacons to The Journal reporter, “We wani pew-own- ors to be men of reputable social stand- ing. Wedo not want the company of politiciang who are looking for the in- tluence of our congregation. The members of Plymouth church aro greatlfv oxcited over the report concerning the alleged purposes of the politicians, and the gentlermen of that class who put in an appearanco ab the sale will merely bo frozen out. The professional politician will be permitted to purchase @ seat in the gallery, but will find his bank account too light to enable him to secure a seat on the ground floor. It was reported yesterday that four aldermen and six supervisors had formed a pool and propose to engage a ticket speculagor to purchase pews for them, “Members of the churck' will be on hond tomorrow night with lists contain- ing the names ot tho aldermen and superyisors,” said the deacon referred to before. ““As the name of each purchaser and his residence must be given, you will see it will be impossible for the po- liticians to pull the wool over our eyes. The ticlet speculator scheme will not work.” Judge Benjamin F, Tracey, Lorin Palmer, Assessor Jonathan T. Norton, Colonel Horatio C. King, ex-Register William Barre, Jerome B. Wass and other prominent politicians occupy pews in Plymouth church, but they are gentle- men of standing’ and unobjectionable to the congregation, A reporter asked Alderman McCarty if he proposed tosecure a pew in Mr. Beecher’s chuoch. “‘G’lang!” said the alderman with a face as red as a peony. “Is it. true that Aldermen O'Connell, Stipling, Kane and yourself have hired a ticket ufimculnur to bid for you?” per- sisted the reporter. ‘‘We've got pews in other churches,” said the alderman evasively as he hurried away. e Wet ae moyor. Buflot, corner of Park avenue and Mr. Pleasant streot, was entercd by burglars Sunday night, and two overcoats, a fur cap, three or four scarfs, a fiddle and two or three dollars in money were taken, There were ten people sleeping in the house at the time and big a dog, which, Mr, Buffet says, had to be held in order to let a person come into the house after dark. No one heard a sound and cannot tell what time the burglars were there. The fiddle which was taken was upon top of a dresser about eight feet high, and a chair had to be used to stand upon in order to reach it. The house was thoroughly rummaged and all the silver was taken out and spread upon the table, but none of it was taken, One thing, however, the night visitors missed, Mr, Buffets’ gold watch was in his vest pocket, and the vest hung upon a chair, but was not touched, e —— ones, who have waited for so long & time can only stand and look at him, At a timo like this the cheek of the much-abused book-agent sinks into utter insignificance, Theso imposters are always woll.dross- od personages and would be mortally of- fended should any one intimate that they wero not gentlomon in every senso of the word; and yet they will trample the grand principlos of equality and freedom underfoot for the purpose of obtaining a few dunning lotters, We think we will station ourselves i the postoftice for a few Sundays aud pub- lish tho names of these chronic of the unidentified victim of the conveat fire at Belleville, Til., took place to-day, and was vory largely attended. et WASHINGTON WAIFS, WasHINGTON, January 14,—Among the persons mentioned as possible delegates to the national republican convention in Chicago, are R.
