AN INQUIRY TO BE MADE INTO THE ODELL CASE. ‘The civil service commission yesterday decided to Investigate the statements made concerning at- tempts alleged to have been made by W. 8. Odell, of this city, to collect political assessments from employes in several departments, apparently in violation of the civil service law. The facts con- cerning Mr. Odell’s distribution of circulars in the Post Office department, inviting contributions of funds for the Indiana campaign, were set forth in a. recent communication from the Postmaster Gen- eral to Congress, and published in THE STAR. In response to a House resolution on the subject the Secretary of the Treasury yesterday addressed a letter to that body, stating that employes from Indiana tn his department had received assessment, circulars from the Indiana republican state central committee, but that he had been unable to discover the name of the ue who distributed them. He also states that he has been informed that during the last political contest circulars were received from @ political committee in New York, but that he has nd been able to obtain a copy of them. Commissioner Thoman hag been directed by the civil service board to inquireYnto the charges con- cerning Mr. Odell.
