There was an immense crowd of people congregated in the streets below to wit- ness the workings of the first standpipe erected in this state. Promptly at the hour named the fire- men, each with a coil of hose on his shoulder, aecended the ladder at- tached to the wstandpipe, which leads directly on to the roof, and operations were commenced, Hose was laid from the hydrant at the corner of Douglas and Thirteenth streets and also from the corner of Douglas and U'welfth streets; both being connected to the bottom of the stand-pipe. One stream was first turned in from a hose on the top of the roof, with an inch and a nozzle, and a ation. General Howard met the party at th transfer yesterday and accompani them todhis city. The Asghalt Contnacs of This Year Completed. Some Interesting Fac The asphalt pavement contracts of the Barber Asphalt company for this year have all been completed i good shape by wperintendent Grant, who made extra efforts to finish the work laid out before winter closed in on us. Hohas done ex- cellent work, and his enterprise and en- ergy are appreciated by the citizens of Omaha, as well as by his employer, Mr. Barber, who recently gave him a very substantial testimonial as a recognition of his valuable services, Mr. Grant has made a great many warm friends in Omaha, and thoy will be glad to learn that he returns here early in the spring to resumo tho work of superintending street paving. Omaha now has over two miles of street pavement, all which, with the ex- ception of six blocks of stone pavement on Tenth street, is of asphalt. Next year the entire business portion of Omaha will be paved Many of the alley districts have already been paved with stone, and tho work i still in progrese. The paving contractors have paid out a great deal of money, and have employed rgo number of men, most of whom live in Omaha.
