A. Harris, of Knox township, has ob- | tained a temporary injunction restraining the opening of a road through his land. | Rev. T. J. Mackay, rector of St. Paul's church, lectures this ovening in Glenwood on*‘Development of Culture.” A trio of drunks, Phillip Schacket, John Wagger and Wm, Devore, were | yesterday taxed the usual amount in po- lice court. The tissue paper festival, to he given by the ladies of the Kpiscopal church, takes place at Dohany’s next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The necessity for paved streets was very apparent again yesterday. Strong | teams with light loads could hardly pull | through the mud on Broadway. Every member should arrange to attend the meeti of the board of trade next Tuesday evening, and business men who are not members should become so. The examination of A1 Nixon, charged by Ed Grattan with obtaining money un- der false pretenses, was very hotly con- tested before Justice Vaughn, Mr. Sears appearing for the prosecution and John Lindt defending, William Barrett, charged with assault- ing A. K. Brown, was yosterday dis- charged by Justice Abbott, but was nev- ertheless punished by being compelled to sit on a jury and to listen to the evidence in a dry civil suit. As will be seen by an attractive notice in another column, Smith & Toller, who are at the front in merchant tailoring, give a very wise suggestion to those who contemplate giving Christmas presents, They give good advice on the subject, The funeral of the late Leonard Lent- zinger took place yesterday afternoon under the auspices of the Odd Fellows, of whom there were about a hundred in line, with a band. Rev. Mr. Bates, of the Presbyterian church officiated in the service, and a large number of friends showed their respect for the fallen and #ympathy for the living by being present, The first injunction of Mrs Sarah Key against the city having been dis solved by Judge Loofbourrow, asecond temporary injunction has been granted to provent the city from filling up to grade the strect in” front of the Herdic barn. The first injunction was dissolved on a technicality. * The second will prob- ably hold until the case can be more fully heard. i W. It Vaughan, who is now actingno- ble grand arch of tho Ancient Order of Deuids, has issied a dispensation for a new grove in Argus, Boone county, which starts out with fino prospects. A new grove is soon to be started at Mis- souri Valley, and the grove here scemsto bLe in a flourishing condition, 1n fact, the Druids seem 1o be increasingnot only in numbers, but in prosperity and strength, The engine which was iitended to be used for furnishing the electric light proves a little weak, and another will probably have to be procured. The de- lay is now caused by this, but a faw days will probably determine this fully, and in the meantime -the public needs to show patience. It always takes more time than is expected in starting any such enterprise, as there always_ are hindra..ces and mishaps. The young man, who under the name of Lloyd, was arrested for an attempt to | ! get a forged check cashed at the Citizens bank was brought before Judge Ayles- worth yesterday afternoon, for the pur. pose of baving his trial fixed, The amount was placed at $500 and being un- able to furnish it, he was sent back to jail, He will not probably have a preli- minary examination, as the grand jury is now in session, and witnesses in the case have already been summoned before that lmd{ The young man,or rather boy, seems to follow the advice of the letter found on his person, warning him to maintain his identity, and keep close-mouthed. He refuses to say much about the affair, e — Re, ate Transfers, The following deeds were filed for re- cord in the recorder’s office, December G, reported for the Bex by P, J. A Clity of Five T'h | with Water Works and Street \ Cars, and 8111l Growing, | Correspondence of Tus B | Ren Ouk, lowa, December &, For | taste in location, excellency in construc tion, and beauty of surroundings, Red Oak may justly elain the title of “Gem | of the Valley,” situated, aa it is, a litt] cast of the confluence of a stream called [ Red Oak with the Nishnabotana river, fringed on the cast, south and west with beanutiful woodland, Tt presents tho ap pearance of a beautiful picture set in an clegant franic. It is built partly in the valley and partly on a hill, the business part of the | town being in the valley, while the more | pretentious residences accupy the hills | Numbering nearly five thousand inhabi tants, it is far alead of many towns of double that number in public spirit, en nd overything that goes tomake up a town of grit and “git there.” It has long since laid aside its village swaddling clothes, and assumed those of a metro- politan cut, and wears them with ease and grace, It has a splendid system of water works, that supplies the city with an abundance of good and pure water, which have been in operation something more oars and have paid for them selves many times over in the saving of property from the ravages of fire. It possesses an excellent strect car line, with cars running at regular intervals, of which the town is very proud, being that much ahead of all the surrounding towns of its size. The town is compactly and substan- tially built. The business lots surround. ing the square are neatly all occupied by solid built business blocks. Three of the princizal streets leading from the {square are also improved by brick build- ings. All kinds of business and trade are well ropresented, but none apparently overdone, as all seem to be prosy and enjoying a good business, The people are kept posted in the news of the day by one daily and three weekly newspapers—all presenting the evidences of strc management, cous ¢ vitality and cnorgotic three of them republican in politics and one anti-monopoly. The moneyed interests of the fown and community isjtaken care of and transacted by three national banks, all doing a good business, Eloven churches attest the doep and dovotedly religious character of the peo ple. A Man Loves His Wife 80 Much That He Thumps Her. Yesterday afternoon Judge Aylesworth Mat- thews, a man who seems to be getting was called upon to adjust W, J, along very well in the world, financially and otherwise, except that he ix intensely jealons and of a very excitable nature, so much so that his acts have about broken vp his home. His wife complained of him, hecause yesterday he thumped ler and even raised a chair to brain herwith, She claimed that he had been very quar- relsome for about two weeks, and she could stand it no more. He admitted that he had struck his wife on more than ane oceasion of late, and the only excuse he could give was that he did it on the spur of the and that he was very excitable. Hoth agreed in the statement that about two years ago while living on their farm in Sac county, a pedlar came to the house while he was away, and on his return his wife told him that the man was a hard look- ing customer, and that she was afraid he would come back and do them harm. He wanted to know of his wife if the man had insulted her, but she calmned him down and told him no. About ten weeks ago, however, in talking with him she owned up that the peddiar had insulted her, and from that time since the hus- band has Leen charging her with being untrue to him, and at times became s enraged by his foolish jealousy as to beat her and abuse her. The neighbors and friends all give her the credit of being as true and loyal a wife as ever man had. He acknowledged that he had been wrong, and offered to ‘‘forgive her,” and after receiving some pretty sharp advice from the court, and making promises to behave himself, he was let off’ with a 810 fine.
