The victim Is & very pleasant appearing lady, named Mras, Baateon, who was en route to her whole offislal career. In faoi hestakes his reputation on Ita being the best work he has ever done. The aldermen, meeting 88 & board of equallzation, have gone over the work very eareful- 2 ly, item by item, and their aggregated 2 tlme thus spent amounts to as much or more than that spent by the as- seesor. Henry Paschal Is putting up a small brick bullding on Broadway, next to the site of the old Sloux City house. It is too bad that the whole vacanocy there could not be filled by a three- story block. It is ex- peoted that there wil) be more than the usual storm ralsed about the al- dermanic , aad yeot there has been no assessment in meking or re- vlewing which more time and care has been shown, The hue and ory is not ralsed on account of careless- ness, but on account of the alleged ab- sencs of equity. There are some strange facts con- nected with the assessment. There are ranning from Main to Pearl streets sevoral business bulldings, one owned by Mrs. Knepper, ocoupled by the Booton Tea company; another two by Aldérman James, ecoupied by Jobn Bono & Co. and by Bushnell & Brackett; another oocupled by Harte, MoCune & Co. and owned by Sam Hass, and two others occupied by Stewart Bros. These bulldings, with ground, are doubtless worlh $10,000 and the rentals pay a big Interest en this amount, Thase have bsen as- sessod at $3,000 each, but Alderman James' buildings, which are of the same sort and value and apparently worth a littla more, as the uppar part in furnished Into offices, has been re- duced to §2,600. Alderman James' property where ho lives 1s & fine plece of land, com- poatng & whole block, and has three good hounses upon {t. He is sald to have beon offered $27,000 for the property. It was asseesed at $6 800, and the board roduced it to §5,000. On the other haud Mrs, Sherraden who owns half 28" muoh land west, not nearly eo valuable, sud with three houses, one which was moved onto the land tweuty years ago, and t other one-story buildings, was osed for $1,600, bu' it I8 proposed to ralse her property to $2,600. The thirty acres of ground owned by Fostor, the green house man and florlst, all ina fine state of cnltiva. tion, and well improved by bulldings, | ** is assessed at $40 an acre, while the five acres of hollow and bluff, on which {s located the little powder house, it is proposed to ralse to $100 AD Agre, - The elegant home of Mr. Orltten. den, with twenty-four acres of land, the house probably costing $8,000, a new brick barn, etc., is placed at $2,600. A S8t. Louls man,a ‘for- elgner,” a non-resident, has four acres botween Orittenden & Sfedentopf’s plece of land, which 1s very broken and unimproved,ls to be raised to $125 an acre, Alderman Sledentopf’s pro- perty with buildings which are rather old, was placed at $150 an acre, and the alderman made no protest, The Ogden house and Pacific house are assossed alike, $15,000 each, The Union Pacifio is assessed for about $360,000, The bullding owned by M, Bennett and ocoupled by Van Brunt, Thomp- son & Co., was assessed at $4,000, and s to be ralsed to £6,000, while the BShugart Implement company's building assessment s not $500 dif- erent. Bonnett's bullding is 60 feet square, while the Shugart building s 50 by 100, and both are three stories, These are but ssmples of some of the figuring, showlng how men’s judg- ment will differ. SOUTEERN GENILEMEN AT CARDS, A Momentarv Misunderstanding Be- tween the Colonel and Major. From the Chlcago Herald, On the train between Mentgomery, Als., and Nashvllle, Tenn., thero were a dozen of us chattiug away in the smoking-car, when one of the men drew out a pack of cards and proposed a game of euchre, He soon found a artner, and after » fow hands they an playlog for $1 & polnt and ten polnts for a game. Naturally enough we were all Interestod, and more or loss exclted, By and by there was a slip somewhere, and the one called colonel remarked: ‘‘Major, hands off the cards!" ‘‘Beg your pardon, Oolonel, bat the trick is mine."” “‘Major, 1 hope you will excuse me for calilng you a llar.” “‘Oh, certainly, Colonel, but I take that trick with the king of spades.” “If you do, Major, I'll take you with thie!” eald the Colonel, as his shooter came out, ‘‘Ah! let me see, Colonel--let me see. You led the niae of spades and 1 pat on the king.” “No, Major; I led the nine of hearts and you refused suit,” ““That's so—that's so0,” said the Major, as he locked over his cards, “*Qolonel, I beg your pardon for hav- Inq taken you for a blackleg.” ‘Oh, don't mentlon it, Excuse me for having hesltated to shoot you when I belleved you to be a Chlesgo gambler, It's your play, Major!” home in Denver, having been on a trip east, accompanied by her little daughter. At the Unlon Paclfic de pot here she fell In couversation with another woman, and the two siarted to walk along down towards the Deovers’ hotol, just as the male confidencer aud victim have done be- fore. On the way thoy met a man, who demanded of the confidence woman some money, saying he had got the goode. After rome talk the vict!m was {ndoced to lend the other woman 860 taking a check of $460 for secartty, The confidence female walked back toward the depot with the man to see about the goods, leav- ing the Donver lady to walk along slowly untll cvertaken, It did not take long for the vlct!m to have her euspicions aroused, and soon con- firmod, that she had been swicd.ed. She secured the services of the police, and In company with Officor Mallen started in search of the swindlers. They soon got track of the supposed confidence woman, though dreseed In diftorent clothes, having appsrently changed her dress, The Denver lady identitied her, and had the officer arrest her. On being taken to the police station the woman gave her name as Mrs. Susan McLaughlin, and clalmed to be entirely innocent of any knowledge of the transaction in any respect. She waa stout In her assertion that it was a oane of mistaken identity. The check on which the money was borrowed was very bungliogly filled out. It was dated Topeks, Aprll 27, 1882, and was drawn on the Firet Natlonal Bank of Topeka, In favor of Mrs, Mary E. Wells, or bearer, for , and nigned **Oscar B, Manewell, Sec'y.” The number of the check was 14 487, and it was ondorsed, “‘Mrs, Mary E Woells, countersigned and rogls pril 27, 1882.” Commer Z finest styles and reasonablo rates, at Pryor's Bek Job Offise, 7 Pearl street. San Francisco Call, The stoamship NewOrleans had been attached for 65,000, and lay moored ot the old long wharf, Captain Ned Wakeman, who had been tho hero of more than one eeccapsde in running steamers off under & sheriff's nose— the most notable one being in New York harboe—itched to get away with the New Orleaus, and, once on blue water, snap his fingers at all sheriffs and thelr legal proceeses. Sherlff John O, Hays was wary., Slxty five thousand dollars was at stake, and it stood him in hand to keep hils eyes open, One evening a mesrenger came rm:]nlng to his office, out of breath, and “‘Something wrong golng on at the wharf, colonel.” ‘‘What about?” “‘The Orleans. Steam’s up. It loeks to mo as it she was golng to make a trip.” ft dld not take many moments for the sheriff to reach the scene, where he found a sailor meddling with the moorlngs, “‘Let that alone,” cemmanded the colonel, “*Who are you?" atked the sallor. “I'm the sheriff of the county. Get away from there as quick as you can,” The sallor reported the state of at- falrs to Capt. Wakeman who thought he could do what the seaman falled to accomplish. He came forward for the J. N.
