A Case that Grew Out of a tet It Will Probably be Bettled Outeide the Court -, A few days ago an {tem appeared in Tur Bee concerning a little affalr which occurred at Fremont, in which Sherlff Grogg made a bet with Oliver Smith that s certaln ring, which was to be rifilsd off, could not be dupli- cated for $12.00. The money was put up in the hands of G. T. Smith, Eeq.,an old restdent of Fremont and a gentleman from the word go. “'Uncle George” csme downto Omaha with the ring and made a bargain with Max Meyer & Bro. to daplicate the jewelry for leas than the amount named. Oa his return home he was sued snd arrested at the instigation of Sheriff Gregg, and quite a sensation has been stirred up by the sffatr. Uncle George was In the clty yester- day and got the ring and duplicate, which are so near alike that no one could tell which was which, and with these he returned to Fremont on the Denver train last night, in readiness to appear when hlis case Is called this morning. He got into a game of poker with a Fremont man, Jerome Porterfield, and in the course of the game both dreva good hand and bet rather freely, the stakes finally reaching the sum of $60 a side. Lydia Brownell and the bereavement of her husband, Geo, W. Brownell, and four little children, the youngest a nursing babo. The Brownells live in a ocottage on Far- nam and Thirtleth streets, and Mr, B, 18 » carpenter by trade. A meoting was held at 5 o'clock fast evening at the Millard Lotel, the ob- ject of which s to crganiza a rocial and bustness club {n this clty, after the plan of those in oxistence ia large cities. Among thoso prosent were: Hon, Ezra Miilard, H. W. Yates, A. L, Strang, J. E. Markel, W. W. Wallace, Herman Kountzo, Gay Barton aud s soore of others of equal prominencs, It was declded to procoed to organ- Ize the club, and a general outline of the plan was adopted. The member- ship is to be limited to fifty, and the membership fee is to be $300, making a total of $15 000 to start with, which money {a to be used in purchasing a lot and erectiug thereon a club house after the style of the olub houses in New York, Ohicago and other citles, only upon a smaller acale. Alreadya large number of gen- tlemen have signified their Intention to join the clab, and there will be no difficulty in getting the full member- ship.
