L. B. Clark & Co., drugglsts, 106 Broadway. A new cement floor Is belng lald In the front portion of the county jail. Alderman Keating is making some marked Improvements In his Broad- way store. The sheriffs of the state are to meet in this clty May 23 and 24, at the Og- den house parlors. Permlt to wed was yesterday grant- od to Edward G. Wood and May J. Rickey, both of this city. Ida Story was yesterday fined $39 10, the highest fine yet pald in by any of the keep rs of prostitution. There are a ‘ew cases of scarlet fover Inthe city. The board of health should be on 7o alert to take all needed measnt.s to prevent any spread of the disease. City Clerk Troutman yesterday turn- ed ovor to the olty treasurer $5,342, the rec:ipts from licenses and fines durlag the past five days. If the city could have such recelpts the year around from these sources, there would b> little for the tax payers to ralse. Oue of the teachers in the Bloomer sohool while experimenting with gas before a class In chemistry met with an accldent, one ot the jars exploding, scattering glaes in all directions and glving some slight scratches and outs to several puplis. The committee appointed to seoure speakers for decoration aay, Colonel Dalley, Judge Reed and Colonel Sapp, have invited as oratoss of the day Mayor 0. 0. Oole, of Nebraska City, formerly of the 2d Wisconaln, also & signal offiser of Gen. Sherman’s staff, and Charles M. Harle, of this oity. Joseph MoLean was the only drunk in the police court yesterday. His fine was un?y $7.60, $2 less than what fines have ranged al duriog the cold weath- er. Pernapa thé drop is caused by the fact that 1t costs the city nothing now forcoal te heat the calaboose during the summer season. Perhaps the saloon license being ralsed, it is desm- ed no more than just that those wao et drunk should be allowed the bene- t of Inoreased olty revenue, by hav- ing a little taken of the penalty for gettiog drunk. Thers I8 now lylng very il at the Valley house an old man, who scems to be struok with great remorse about some wonoy which he says he stole from Spetman Bros, The poror man 18 80 sick as to be unabls to taik very much or very intelligently, but this seems the burden of his mind The firm whom he seems to feel that he has wronged know nothing sb ut any such tranesoiion, bat recognize the man as haviug traded la the store some. Ho has been at the hotel only o day or two, Mace Wise is showing much enter- prise and publio epirit by the energy with which he s ciroulsting & aub- scription for the Improvement of Falrmount park. About $400 has already been raised. Tarre is no city in the country which possesses such a beantifal natural park and yet our cltizens seem to laok in wppreciation of it. S.range es it may seem there are many here who have never even looked at tha park, and yet every visitor from clsewhere exprosses de— light at what nature has done there, and sstonishment that Council Bluffs does not expend a little more money in adding to the beauty and commerce of the place, Now that Alderman James has co gracefully rourncted the i ricuations which he so flippantly flung sgainst those who hud charge of the building of the Madison street onlvert, the dem ocratic orgen which echoes hls whie- periugn should follow his example o elee the matter should be promptly and thoroughly fovestigated by disin terested aud competent porsons, It would also be well to inquire futo the bullding of the Bryant street culvert while they are about it, for there is much more doubt about that than about the new one. A full report of the cost of the Madison strect culvert has been given in detell, and spread upon the records, Cau any report of the other one be found? Some eay not, Bon.e more fast ones have arrlved at the driving park, among them be. ing Loafer and Blg Soap from Mt Pleasant, each with & record of 2:2h and both very fleet trotters Dan Anderson, an old timer, is also here wita Maggle ¥ from Maryville, Mo , who hes a record of 2:80, Two new runciug horses bave also arrived and there sre twelve more whioh are ex oted betwoen now uext Sandsy 'here Is every reason to expeet that this coming meeting will ba one of the most lively of aty ever held here, An attempt wiil be made to eecure a late dummy train, so that those from the other side of the river who desire to attend can return home the evening of the same‘day, and yet see all the events, If this canbe done scores of Omaha folks will nitend the meetlng dally. The caee against Wilson and Kelter, the gamblers charged with robbing young Van Buren of 435 1s not con- cluded yet. There was nothing more done in the matter yesterday. Col. Sapp, one of the attorneys for the de fense, having to be absent from the olty on other business. It is expected that more evidence will be taken to- day. The attempt of the efense has thus far been to show that Van Buren lost the money in & game of poker instead of its belng grabbed or borow- ed under false pretenses. There seems to be no dispute, however, about the that young Van Buren lost the %' o drank and that he re- eelved no consideration for it what- over, and that Wilson and Kelter got " [labor. Hedrew the money for both, the money snd gave no equivalent. That seems to come about as near tos oase of robbery as one cares to got, even if it is granted under the gentll- ity of ‘‘.quare gambling."” The unforfunate trouble lately arlsing out of a case of corporal pun. {ehment, In the Strectaville school, leads to the sugeestion that there should be here, as In most olties, some regulations in regard to such mattors. As it 1s, It in left wholly at the discrotlon of the teacher as to the particalar modes (f puntshment, the instructions belug aimply not to be hasty, but to be more deliberate than in any other matter of school govern- mont, In some cities the teachers are restrioted to the use of a strap, provided for the purpose. They are not allowed to strike a pupll save on the hand, and are restricted to ten blows. 1o other cases they are not to Inflist punishment until the day after the offense is ocommitted, thus preventing punishment while the teacher is In anger or haste. It seemn that some such regulations should be in force here. BESRAD- S DANISH COURTSHIPS, Some of the Pacullarities Which At~ tend Them in Louncil Blufts A very pecullar, and In some re- spects ludlcrous case has just been heard and declded before Justice tchurz, A young Dane sued for $90, which he clalmed to have expended on a young Danish womsan in presents to her, and in paying her paesage to this country, it being his {ntention to marry her. It seems that he was at work on a farm when he sent for her to come to this country, and after arrlving here she secured em- ployment on the same farm, and worked with her lover, husking corn and dolog other At last she decided to marry another man, and as soon as she did so her former lover commenced suit. She showed in aefense that the money he had pald out for her wasa present, and farthor clalmed an offset for what money she had earned in the corn fisld. The jury declded in her favor, glving ker judgment for oue dollar, Justice Schurz has had another csse which involves a Danish courtship also. A short time ago & young man who own arm not many miles from here, wooed and won a young woman who wus employed in one of the hotels here. Oune day he came to tho olty, and sought an interview with his be- trothed, but the hotel folks kept her at her work and rofused him admit tance to the kitchen, In the evening, however, the lovers got. together and were married by the justice. They returned to the hotel whero the youay man luslsted on remaining until morn- iug with his bride, intending nex! day to take her home to the farm. The hotel foiks ocould not belteve the olalm of marrtage, and the wirl was sent to go to her room, while the bridegroom wastold to leave. He stole around in the alleyway to get an Interview with her as to what they should do, when some of the boys about the hotel, who were on the look- out for him, began to shell him with oyster cans, He beat a hasty and frightened retreat, and not belng much used to the ways of a city, he was at a loss completely as to his plans. He burrled home to the farm, while the young woman, nearly frenzled, thought he had descried her entirely. She sooght advice of a policoman who took her to his house, and then wrote the young husband a letter, on rocelpt of which he came In and clalmed his own, taking her home In pew e B right'sDiseave. A Destructive Fire Causes & Heavy Loss, Highteen Horses Burned ina Livery Btable, Just betore 1 o'clock yesterday morning an extensive fire broke out in Avoos, the origin being in Coat's Iivery stable, and the flames spreading with such raptdity that for a time it seemed aa if the whole town would be swept away. A man who was sleep ing in the stable had a narrow escape from death, he just getting out with his life and having no time to save even his clothing, KEighteen horses wore burned in the stable. Ths fire spread quickly to Seifert & Wew' lumber yard, and soon that was enveloped In flames. A large amount of corn, stored in slx large oribs, and belonging to Haccock's olevator, was also soon on fire, and it was only by hard work that the ele- vator {teelf was saved. The fire department of Atlantic was telegraphed for, and arrived Iu time to dosome good, thoughthe fire was under control before they got there, and the flames destroyed ltutle other property but that named. The total loss timated to reach $35,000. Mr. Co ance of $56,000, and Selfort & Weis, whose loss will be about $15,000, had an Insurance of $7,000. There seemed to be some difference of opinion as to how the fire origin- ated, some clalming that it was onused by lightning, others that 1t wes incendlarlem. Some susplclous clr- sumstances surrounded a colored man, and he has been arrested to awalt an {nvestigation.
