Most of the heavy rain that fell during the night occurred within the short time mentioned and amounted to over two inches after it was over. Slnce then another thunder storm ed over the olty, which added further to the total rainfall, which aggregate over three inches. At the receipt of the morning’s report at the »lgnal office there was no auch storm reported frum any station on the weather bulletin, and as the variations of the alr pressure are nowhere marked and the weather In the north- weat s generally fice, it must be as- sumed that the storm was local or of limited extent at best, though Kap tioularly violent as far ss thunder, lightning and rain is concerned where it did occur, The wind was varlable, not averag- ing above twelve miles an hour except forthe 16 minutes from 3:45 to 4 o'clock, when It blew at a rate of 26 miles an hour, the nearest approach possibleto a gale. Upto 11 o'clock yesterday there was & great deal of humidity In the air, It belng nearly saturated, and Ne- braska air 1s generally very free from humidity, DESTRUCTION OF THE TELEPHONE EX- CHANGE, At 3:60 & m. a flash of lightning struck the west side of thetower above the central tolephone exchange, through which abont 400 wires run to the room below. The electrle fice shot aut fully three feet from the long switch board below, bui the uight operator dld not know that the house was struck until he glanced up and eaw the flames In the tower above, which had taken fire Immediately. The operator ran to No. 3's house d gave the alarm, which was also sent in by Capt, Dona- hoe and Ofticer Buckley, and box 21 was sounded, brizging the entire de- partment to the spot In qalck time. A line of hose was run up the stair- way to the central office and a stream of water turned Into the tower from below, which soon drowned out the flames, which bad been vlsible for soveral blocks. Yesterday morning the room had about two feet of water in it, and had 10 be abandoned, the two offices across tho hall, which had already been rent- od by the exchange, belng temporari- ly fitted up for ocoupancy. All the wiree from the tower to the switch board ware melted, but it was impossible to teil kow much the switch boards themseives werd - damaged. There were lightning arresters bath in the cupola and at the switch and the manager etated to BreGreporter that he consldered | the inside of the building the safest place one could be in during a storm, a8 the ground wires should taken any bolt of lightning to theground. A vislt was made to the tower and it was reduced to charcoal, both {oaide and out. The iron sheeting on the west side was warped and bent more than on the other sides, and it is supposed that was the point struck, The glass In. sulators were all crushed to atoms and the panes of glass in the tower were doubled up. The wires were melted and twisted into an unrecog- nizable maes and in short the working power of the office was complete'y paralyzad, so far as the use of the city circults are concerned. As the re- portor stood at the tower with the manager a flash of lightning sent a fow sparks snapp!r ¢ off the ends of the wires and a retreat to the room below was made, THE EXTRA TERRITORIAL LINES, There was but one exception to the general dlsorder, which is that the “lextra territorial lines,” to Lincoln, Coaucil Bluffs, Fremont, etc., are all intact, and at the end of the storm will be In working order. The Instru. ments were all put up during the fore- roon in the new quarters. These will still be open to subscribers wiehing to communicate with any outside places, and for this purpose the man- ager of the exchange states that when Omaha partles are wanted he will send 8 messenger for them to come to the central office, and when they wish to converse with outsiders they will have to go to the office until the local circuit can be repaired. SENDING FOR SUPPLIES, It was npecessary to send clear to Chicago for sup- plles to 1epair the damage done, and telegrams were sent for them yes- terday. It will be two or three days before they can be recelved and will be from & week to ten days more before repalrs can be made, sothat our citizens may count on its belng at least two weeks before they can again private fnstruments wero frjured, al though several of them eent ont a die play of electrioity, rarg the bells end 0 on. The loss tothe telephone folks cannot at present be estimated, GENERAL EFFECTS, The storm was qulte severe ia its general effects all over the o'ty, wash- ing out fills, flhoding oellars and filling clateros to over- flowlog. To mavy it seemed that & water spout must have passcd aboat the town, but while ln fact the total rainfall has otten becn greater within a given timo, it was the tremen- dous torrents faliing all at once that made it seem more dangerous. The greatest damage of all was done in North Omaba by the overflow from the sewer, which was not large enough to draln so vast a terrltory as it The head of the sewer d the water sech- {og an outlet naturally took the old creck channel and sent a torrent fif- tean foet deep rolllng down tcwards tho river, and oarrying destruction v.tiin. Many diepute this theory, and say that the mouth cf the sower was ohoked by manure from the streot car barusand by other rabblsh. Com- misstoner O'Koefe investigstod themat ter, and reports that on Nioholas streat betwwn 18th and 19:h he removed the grating from the maln hole and found that the water had risen from 34 to 4} feet above tha top of the sawer whion was proof that it had filled up and then ran over, Tae rolllng waters swept everything along {n thelr courss tak- ing chicken coops, lumber and sash, undermining outhouses and in ove TS stauce taking the foundation of a kitchen, which had to be rem)ved yes- torday It carried away the 20:h streot bridge and In the cellars below 18 h ross meveral feet. At this polnt it struck the WOODMAN OIL WORKS, I: rushed agalost both sides of the new brick wing and nnderminingthem fell with a orash, leavlog a great open- fog in each, and the part still left standing shaky and demoralizad. Throagh the ruins a stream poured from the southwest and jolned the turbid stresm In the creek. From this point 1t rushed a block tarther to the fillbeing mada under the Sixteenth stroet bridge. The eatimate of work done as handed in to the commlesion- ers Monday showed that there w 3,300 cublc yards pat in, and of this amount lees than 300 yards remaip, eo that the loes, which must fall on the county Is about $390. Here the water back up for a long dls- tance and played havo with the back yards on the line of the creek. A half dczen fine porkers, weighing at least 500 pounds were washed down 1ato the bed of the creck and remalned there yesterday etuck in the mud From the Sixteenth strect bridge te the river the bottoms were flyoded and lmmense quantities of lumber, sash and so on could be seen at dsy break. Oae man caught enough lum- ber to bulld himaelf a house. THE U, P. SHOPS, were partly flooded and the work in the blacksmith shop was suzpended durlng the forenoon, but it was ex- pected would be resumed daring the day., Inthe CENTER OF THE CITY there was a good deal of damage done in the aggregate, but no very eerlous washout, The fill uniting Farnam street with the county road was cleaned out and commanication in that direction cut off, Oa Su. Mary's ave- nue it is reported that half the avenne walks were carried awsy, and a blg washous occurred near its intersection with Eighteenth street. At the residence of Mr. E. Rosewater, of TuE Bk, opposlte court house block, the full cffeets of of theraln fall was noted and yosterday there was a land alide on the west side of his lot, which stands several feet above the sireet. The clstern wont down with the land slide, but no immediate danger is felt as to the safety of the house, which has strong cross walls, Next to the accldent at the Woodman ofl works, the most scrlous damsge was in South O.aaha at along here, Tne sawer was stralght and cat acrese severai of the bends of the stream, which had never beon filled up nor any wmeans provided for carrylng «ff the surplus water which would otherwlse take tho street forit The storm filled up the creek bed snd the water rose until, fiading no other ontlet, It worked urder the wal's of the new buildleg, broke them down, and ran out by {te old course Shoun'd a sait be began sgalost the city the quostion presented will by whother the Woodman com- pany were rot negligent in constrnet- tng the buildli g on the slte it is, and without precantions against a flyod.
