OMAHA, THE PAILY BEE--OMAPA THURSDAY Al RIL 19 OLD MEXICO. The Four Rich Mining Districts of the Republic. Pachuca and Its Surroundinge —32cenes and Iocideunts of Mining Life, ‘Wealth end Habits of the Feople, Eto Fpecial Correspndence of the Globe Demcerat. Pacnuca, Mex., March 15, 1883 R:al del Monte, Et Onhioe , in the state of Hidalgo, are among tho richeat mining distriots in the republic of Mexico., Pachuca Ilsthe capital of tho state, and lies 657 miles northeast of the City of Mexico. The journey can be easily made by means of the Vera Cruz rallroas which Pachucs Is counected by way. Taklog this trip a few days ago, we were much entertained by an irol- dent which occurred on this tramway, buat was otherwise quiteout of the way A obild entered the car with some. thing carefally concealed under her “‘rebosas.” It outlines were those of a dog, but strange to say it peeped liko a chicken. She quite exvited the curlosity of the travelers, which was finally satitfisd by the discovery that she held both a dog and a chicken, and pinched the chicken ccoasionslly to give character to her bundle. It seoms the price exacted for dogs brought on the tramway, who are charged for as passengers, 1s quite be- yond the parse of the poor, exceeding the fare for human travel, while there is no chargo for chlckens, and so it wan that the little gicl had recourse to such an logenfous piece of smuggling As the tramway approaches Pachu:a the mountalns seem to draw near, one of them having on its summit a stone formatlon, which, in the dlstance, bears a striking resemblance to a huge cathedral with domes and towers. It is In the region of this grand ca- thedral that some of the richest ores are found. 1t 1s obvlous the ADVANTAGE OF THIS RRGION over other diatriots in Mexlco, being thas easily connected with the great oapital and having easy access to the cosat. That miners have avalled themselves of this advantsge is shown by the list of mines: Pachuoa works 164, Real del Monte 76, El Chico 24, Santa Ross 13--a total of 267. The powerful “Rsal del Monte Mining Company” works 77 of these. Real del Monte lles to the noriheast of Pachuca, El Ohlco to the north, and Santa Roea to the northwest, From the time of the conquest up to the present date it is estimated that these four districts have ylelded $1,000,000 out of §4,000.000, the total amount extracted from the mines of Mexico. The Aztecs, before the con- quest, scught silver in these reglors, and sfter the subjugation innumerable Spanteh miners dug holes in the moun- talns, ex racting what ore they counld before their works were obstructed by water, when they abandoned them to dig other holes, The sllver was ob— talned by smelting by the early miners, but it was in 1667 a Spaniard named Bartholeme de Medina discovered, in Pachuca, the process of amalgamatlon with mercary. His discovery ia the basis of THE ‘‘PaTIO" PRCCESS, which is the system mostin use in Mexico, having been found, so far, the cheapest and possibly the best adapted to the country, The ore when brought from the mine is cracked into small pieces and assorted acoording to Its richness by hands employed for the purpose; it is then put in sacks and carried b{ maules to an ‘‘hactenda de beneficio " Here it {s'ground toa fine powder by belng crushed between huge revolving stones, turned by horse power. These grinding stones are called ‘‘arrastres.’” When the ore s sufficlently fine 1t is mixed with meroury and salt by means of mules tramping through it an aver- gae period of ten eays The mass is then washed, the refuse passing off with the water, the amalgum sinking to the bottom. This washing 12 done in Pac- huca by mep who steady themselves with ropes hanging from the roof cf a shed, and walk bsckward and forward in the “torta.” As the water is al- lowed to paes off it runs through a narrow channel, the bottom of wh'ch is laid in ridges, Ia this channel little boys shufile thelr feetabout, detaining in the ridges any portion of the metal that may pass cff. Tae boys earn 26 cents & dsy for this work, For the most part these workers looked chilled and unhealthy, splashing sround in the muddy water. In G juato the washing is done by of huge stones revolved in the water. When the water passes en- tirely off from the works the natives often obtaln from it quite a large quantity of sllver. Many of them are at this work all day in tae waste water sait leaves the ‘‘benencio.” The pro- cess cf separating the silver from the meroury s simple and well known, In Pachuca thers are seven reduction works, most of them on this aystem. There 1s but one ‘‘pan” mill so far established. Foreigners sroat present trylog to latroduce improved methods and machinery, This, when accom- pllehed, will ba of great service, as oros not ylelding more than $30 a ton are not oonsidered worth working by the present process, Great quantities of these depreciated ores lie outside the mines walting some less expensive method, Miners not owning their own works csn have thelr metal re- duced at the ‘‘beneficlos” st $20 or 22 a ton, with a charge added for the loas of mercury, which is aboat 10 per cent of the quantity nsed THE IMMENSE WEALTH of these regions was proved by one Pedro Jose Bornero de Terrcros, a Spaniard, io 1739, He having acquired a fortune in Qaeretaro, started for hls native Spain, but on bia way he stopped to look lnto the mines of this reglon. He beeame so much Interested thet he soon put luto them his entire fortune. In this he was asslsted by Bustamente, a friend, who jolned his enterprise. When thelr capltal was exhausted, nothing daunted, Bustamonte returned to Queretaro to ralse fands and Terreros went for a like purpcse to the Oty of Mexico., Bustamente falled, but Terreros returned to his mines to be relmbursed, when finslly he brought cause they look so stern and grave. taln side nnder whiol out of them $11,000,000 and the title of Conde de Sta Maria de Regla- Regla befug the name of one of his mives, Santa Gortrudls, one of tho mines now in ‘‘bonanza,” has within tho last four years given a gross yleld of $4,- 000,000. It s as yot worked only 160 yarde deep. More than §2,000,000 has boen pald over to shareholders in dividends or used for improvements in the mine, It has an engloe ot fifty horse power, for which was pald §75,- 000. Oa this oocasion El Ohico, as the clouds lified, was as protty as a ploture, It difers from other Mexican villages in having peaked thatched roofs, and with ita pointed caps nestled sgiinst the mountaln unusually attractive to the traveler's eye.
