This melancholy event has cansed the deepest regret to the queen, the royal family and all members of the royal household. To her majesty the loss is {rreparable, and the death of this truly faitbfal and devoted servant has been a grevious shook to the queen. In 1849 Mr, John Brown entered the queen’s service as one of the Balmoral glllies, and by his careful attention, steadines and intelligence. he rose to the position of the queen’s personal servant in Socotland, which in 1864 was extended to that of constant per- sonal attendant ou her majesty on all occaslons. B. Mallett. THE STAR ROUTE TRIAL. Ex-Postmaster General Jamea was calicd to the stand in the star route trial to.day. The exsmination was brief, The prosecution put on the stand for the purpose of contradioting vohn W. Dorsey three hutel clerks who showed by registers that Rerdell was In Nebraska and Colorado on April 9, although Dorsey had sworn he was in Washington. Judge Julius B. Bissell, of Lead- ville was the next called and was ex smined with regard to the so called “‘Belford Check.” 1Ia the argument asto the admissibllity of this tesii- mony, Bliss said the books showed a check draft to “J. B B" He would not say who ““J, B, B.” represented, but would admit that he did not now believe 1t meant Belford. Witnees sald in Jane, 1879 he saw Dorsey draw a check or draft in Leadville to order of ‘“J. B, B.”; did not remem- ber its exact amount, but thought it was for about $2 000; It was to be divided among four geutlemen; Judge Bowen, afterwards Senator Bowen, was one of the party. In reply to Iogersoll witness said his (witness’) initials were placed on the check, and Dorsey suggested that Oharles W. Taukersley, one of the party, collect it; did dot know on what bank the check was drawn. It had boen glven to Tankersloy because the Iatter was Dorsiy's attorney, and the check had to be collected out of town, Rerdoll was recalled, and contra dicted John W, Dorsey where he sald that he (Rerdell) was in Washington 1o April, 1879 Biiss then rald that, with the excep- tlon of proof of the contents of the Clendennin letter, the prosecution had concluded, Court then adjourned. The tannerles are runniog with reduced foroes, and it Is thought the matter will be amioably settled within the next twenty-four hours. P, Rus- eoll & 0o, valued at §40,000, at nine o'cleek this evening, destroying that strocture. It Is certaln that the “Da- kota" mill adjolning, valued at $:6,- 000, owned by H, B. Brown & 0., will go, and other more valuable mills in the proximity may follow. The Model and Dakota mills ‘each had a capacity of 2560 barrels a‘dhy.
