It was done by diffsrent classi- ficatlon of goods to evade the law. Special Dispatch to Tus Bu New York, March 20 —Jay GHuld’s avswer in the firat suit of Wm. . Williams against tho Western Uoton and others, in the supteme o urt, was served to dey. This suit is brought tc anvull the consolidation batween the Western Uaion, Ameri- can Unlon and Atlantfe & Pacific telegraph companies. The answer is aganeral denial of the allegations in the complaint. Gould alleges that at a meetlng on Fobruary 6, 1881, the sgreaments of January 19 and Febru- ary 3, for conrolidation, were ratified by a vote of 318 225 sharesinfavorand 60) against. Atthesame meeting 308,- 189 shares voted in favor of increasing the oapitsl stock to $80 000,000 and 100 shares voted agalnst it. The meeting was valid and legally held. None of thestockholders'of the Western Ubnion telegraph dissented feom the stock dividend except Williams and Rafus Hatch, who had but 600 shares botween them. The effect of this agreement, he avera, was to Increase the market value of the Western Union stock, and tho injunction which the plaintiff obtatned depressed the mar- ket value. These ntocks, Gould de- clares, are readily converted into cash, and if the plaintiff did not desire to rotaiu his fnvestment it was easy to convert them into money. ‘Wheat Corners.
