The Oarpenters’ Union. In accordance with previons an- nouncement in THE BEE, a meeting composed principally of carpenters was held last evening at the court house, Mr, Wm, Roper called the meeting'to order, and made a few remarks in which he referred to the close relation- ship between his trade and the car- penter's,. He sald that the bricklay- ers' union of Oouncll Bluffs was re- sponsible for the publication of the call, and stated the object of the meet- ing to be acquaintance with each otner, mutual benefit and the protec- tlon of all mutual Interests, He stat- ed that the bricklayers had, since the formation of their unlon, secured many objects of great advantage of labor Saturday to nine hours, thus glving the men a chance to make necessary purchases and prepare for the Sabbath, and there was no reason why a carpenter should not gain a like concession, as most of the em- ployers were in favor of it, providing an organization could be had that would allke compel all to favor it. A motdon was made to organize, Mr. Hollingsworth was called to the chair, Mr. Stephens was elected secretary. Mr. Hollingsworth spoke briefly for the carpenters, showing the necessity for trades unlons for each trade, Several short speeches were made b) different partles, explaining the ad- vantages which had been galned by co-operation and organization. John Ahles made one of his red-hot speeches, ridiculing mechanics who had courage to contend for their Interests, stating that he himself was sn em- ployer, but he always stood with iabor, and when its enemles chal- lenged he was ready to draw his eword, Oan motlon, & eommittes of twelve carpenters was appointed from among those present to deviee means for or- ganizing the 200 carpenters of Council Rlufts into a oarpentera’ trades union, Next Monday night was fixed upon as the time for the next mesting, snd the hall of tho Kuights of Labor was eelected a8 the place, A member of the cigarmakers unlon then made a brief adaress, and stated that there were sixteon clgarmaers fn this clty, and that they had sixteen members in tholr union. He read a circular which he had recently re- celved from the national organ, show- ing the vast benelfit that was being dc- rived from thelr union, He also re- ferred to the fact that nearly every trade in this clty was crganized except the carpenter; and the lack of organl- zatlon among .hem was responsible for this clty's belng overrun with wood to them; that they had suc- | of tho Warwick Neck Hotel, he i e o 4 oseded in shortenivg the bours | KICRNEANE B S HARE cureand b diso out scabs, drunkards and others who were unrellable or Ignorant of the trade they clalmed to understand.
