Buffalo Special to the Boston Her- ald: About eighteen months ago George Marskell of Niagara, Ont., dis- covered a new process of converting iron into steel. Since then he has been busily engazed in making exten- sive experiments with his dircovery. Several wealthy Oanadisn gentlemen became luterested in the experiments and suecribed sufficient money to pur- chase the old Canada Southern Car works and formed a stock company under the title of the Marskell Steel compsny. Last night aud to-day the presence of several experts and mem- bers of the press. The apparatus consistajof a muffle or retort about 20 feet in length and 3 feetin width, hav- ing » capacity of three tons, with open- ings at both ends and inclosed in brick the heat necessary being giyen by a furnace placed undorneath and fed with coke. At both ends these far- naces are regulated by a number of openirgs made in the brick work on the furnsca and which are stopped up by & block of fire brick on one side. A little over the opening of the retort s placed a tube, in which cert:in chem icals sro placed, which are continually blown into the rotort by a rotary blow- er operated autowmatically by a wire wound aroand a drum, and to which a heavy weight is attached, this keep- ing up a gentle curreut through the chrmber. Ou'sids cf the kullding is & tower in whicn lighter chamical i prepared and run through the door of the retort by luch pipes, buing f.d from each end alternately, and thus, beside glving the gases an cquilibrium and an equal amount of heat in all parts of the chamber, by uniting with other gases, a combustion takes place which in a short time extracts carbon, pllicon and other substances so detri- mental to steol. In operation, wrought or malleable iron {s thrown Into the retort, together with a quantlty of charcoal. The openings are then nealed up, and the metal to be operated on s left in the retort for a [pericd safficlent to reduce the iron to steel, the length of time varylng according to the size of the metal to be operated on and the smouat of steel required ou the arti- cle. As the test pieces of hoop iron an elghth of an inch in thickness were inserted in the retort through the opening made in the door for the pipe, and in five minates were taken out and found to be entirely reduced. I'he pieces were laid aside, and in the morniog were ground and one of them made into a rezor, which was tested by a party and found to be ALL THAT I8 CLAIMED FOR IT, | A number of pieces which were to be | reduced for different manufacturers who sent samples of goods, and sev- | eral tools which were marked by those | preeent, were put in shortly before widnight sud lefe for tho morulng | ecssion, which begun about 10 o'clock, They were drawn from the retort and thoroughly tested, the result baing en- tirely satiefactory.
