The DifMsultien and Annoyances of the switch Tenders- Luaicrous Mistakes Made - Nervous Ki- fects on the Girls at the Central Station. Philadelptia Timos Up in the skyey fifth story building at Fourth and Chesnut streote, where most of the wiros beariug messages from 2,000 telephones concentrate in the general exchange of the bell vom- pany, a roomfull of girls are employed. So general has the telophone come fato use for business purpoaes, 8o fre quent and important are the mossages committed to it, so Inexplicable the uuseen {uflaence that sometimes hin- der or impede communication, sud eo tempestuous and irrascible the oat- burats which unknown vcioss are apt to launch upon the impersonal mahog- any oar, known as ‘‘the rcceiver,” that the person who stands in the central offise and, in theory, holds the key for the transmission ot every mes sage, must possess naturally or else carefully cultivate a store of rare and excellent graces, by comparison with which Job's possessions seem mean and trlvisl. It has been found abso- luteiy necessary tojemp'oy girls becavse of their greater patience. Thoy also have qnicker ears, and are more obe- dlent vo rules and sueceptible of dis- cipline. But their natural restraints of temper and freedom from outburats of bad language are considered their primary recommendation, On an average every girl, whilo on duty, and thelr usual hours are from 7 or 8 in the morning until 7 in the even ing, has the supervision of eighty telephcnes, Under the new, system each girl hasa group of 100 wires, and each wire has at least or:e telephone. As the number of glrls increased the company Introduced a clause into their agreements with sabscribers, provid- ing that *‘any use of the telophone for profane, indecent or rude language, or for any purpose rather than respectful, bona fide businets or soclal messages, shall terminate the contract,” and the company ineists on this to the best of its abtlity, although not always meet- ing with entire sucoess. VULGARIANS AT THE PHONE, The young girls employed, coming from refined home, though poor, have always shown great sensitiveness agalnst any Indignity or indecorous speech reaching them through the telephones. It sometimes happens that one of them seated at her post, with the repreesed air which all tele- phone girls get from hearing messsges all day long and not being allowed to speak & syllable to each other, will burst into tears and become almost hysterical. Very often she will not tell what is said, but usnally some in- sult has been offered, very often com- ing fcom a clerk or other person in the employ of a subscriber, so that it is hard to diecover the culprit., Qalte often when the superintendent calls upon a yourg broker or other person to complain about an objectionable message, they say it was Intended for ‘‘the other fellow,” or was an ‘‘aside” directed to some one in the room, or get ont of it by some ruch excuse. As the expression of his disapproval in langrage more forcible than elegant seems to be considored a manly pre- rogative,” sald one of the brightest girls in the central office on Saturday, ‘‘we mnever notice such indignities when they occur, but we have our thoughts. Now that telephone over yonder Is a perfest gontl:man, has a nice voice, a real sweet voice, and always says ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and is just beautiful. We all respect and admire him very much. We can tell & gentleman through the telephone every time Now that horrid thing there”’—polnting to a green serpen- tine that ended in numbered knob— ‘‘she is & mean, cross, vgly old thing. We know it by her voloe. I feel so angry with her sometimes I could say almost anything, She is impatient, overbearing and uncharitable, and when she feels disagreeable goes to the telephone principally to abuse the irl, who is 50 unfortunate as to get gar call. There {s hardly a woman's voloe that reaches us that is not irrl- table, and I must say that foew of us have the charity to {n able to answer them back with meekness, NOT UP IN BUILDING TERMS, “‘A great many amusing mistakes are made,” the speaker went on, “A few days sgoa gentlemsn who Is a bullder, was communicating with the office of & large manufactaring place in the suburbs, and calling me he sald he could not make the other party hear him, ‘Tell him,’ sald he, ‘that Isaydam the foundations; dam the whole lot of them.’ 1 dropped the hone ia consternation. I had never eard such langusge in my life, I re- fused to repeat the message and told the superintendent. It was thought strange, because the gentleman was a wember of church and had the repu- tatlon of being very particular. Well, I have never ceased hearing about it. When they came to Inquire the mes- sage had been about draining some of the foundations for new buildings where the rain from a large territory came down a declivity, and what he sald was only about the way to keep it off. He often teases me by saying, ‘Operator, how about the founda- tlone?' " * gA somewhat similar story is told by uperintendent Root about the way in which one of the girls was accused of having violated the ocompany's swearing rule. “‘Two gentlemen had just been connected,” said the super- 1ntendent, ‘“‘and were trying to under- stand each other. One man had a low, grefl voloe, and made himself heard easily. The other man had a thin, squeaky volce that sounded almost a thousand wiles away, ‘I want Mr, A’ (meaning the gruff voleed in- dividua)), the squeaky volce kept re- peativg. ‘All right,’ replied the op erator; ‘go ahead; that is him talking to you now, go ahead, go ahead, I say.’ HE WAS MISTAKEN IN THE PERSON, “‘Apparently in great anger the equeaky-volced man rang the bell and stopped. A short time afterward he came to see me. He wanted to see the glrl who had been talking to him, Looklog at her sadly he shook his head solemnly and murmered: ‘‘What a pity, and so young too,' He fdesired to know her antecedents and talked so mysteriously that I finally insisted upon knowing what offence the young lady hfll aomlmhfi. Bhe '“:‘ . m, eatimable and I was 3 nant ‘Well,' m the gen- - e mendea! on hare baed of a place mentioned In the Bible prepared for thoso who violate the telephone company's third commandment, which 1 have beea csrelul to never violate myscl?, Well, when I ramonstrated mildly with your operator about not huerying up, ahe warned mo to take notlce that ste was ‘taiking to me," and told mo to dis- tiuotly to go thers three t in suc- cession.’ As I heard what'the girl really did say myself I was able to ex. plain, and the solemn gentleman loft in confusion. That is wn filostration of the necesoity of haviog a nico ear ae woll ga the disadvantags of a squeaky voioe." Of late it appears great trouble has beon experiencod on acconnt of sick ness among the girls, They nearly all becume eubjoet to long periods of nervous prostration, Several are un der troatment for ocerebro-spinal meningitis, The very quali'ies of forbearance and patlent erdarance which fit them tor thelr positious cavee them to break down, physically, under the continued straln, The tolephones whitch the girla wear on their ears, strapped around thelr head, in the new system, are heavy uwnd producs deafness, and in place of them pretty sllk jooky caps, with light telephones attached to them, have just been in. troduced, and are looked upon by the operatives as & great improvement in every way. —_— An Extracrdinary Case AvsTiN, Trxas, Feb, 20, 1880, To Mr, J. PurLapeLrara, March 3 —Ah Hong, the youthfal proprletor of a Chiness laundry at the southeast cor- ner of Fourth and Monroe streets, on Thursday last launched bis bark on the sea of matrimony. He took to himself an American wife. The youny woman who has acoepted Ah Hong for better or worse is, or was, Miss Addle Farman, of 814 Mackinaw street. She is pretty, and about 18 years of age, and the story of the courtship smacks of the romantic, Ab Hong, wh> is now 24 years of age, came to this city something like five years 2go, and since hisarrival hes devoted much time to the study of English, so that he now can speak the langnageflaently, He has for o long time attended the Sanday echool at the Church of the Epi- phany, 15th and Chestnut streets, and has been converted to Ohris ianity, Mr. Hong's devotlons to Miss Farmoen extended over many monthe, bat al- though ehe has almoest from the firat smiled upon his suit, her mother has until a few days ago bitterly opoousd it. On Thuraday morning Ah H-ng dropped in at Magistrate Colling’ cftice and requested that gentloman to be prepared to marry him at 4 o'clock in the sfiernoon, when he would return with the damsel. At the appolated and, both having answered all ques. tions to the satisfaction of the magls- trate, the connubial knot was tied in the presence of Speclal Officer Blater and Constables Donahue, Kane and MoCarthy. In honor of the event Mr. Hong held a reception on Friday, which was largely attended by his al- mond-eyed countrymen and by & num- ber of t!u lady friends of the bride, When seen to-day Hong had settled down to work with his corps of assist- ant flat-iron artists, and both he and |1 his uewly acquired wifs looked as happy as youog people usually do under auch circumatances. *Women are rapldly finding places in the learned professions and the more lucrative occupations from which they were formally excluded, Many are graduating in mediclne.
