A provision for levy- ing duty on goods composed of two or more materials was amended so as to provide the duty shall be assessed at the highest rates at which the com. ponent chiif valae may be chargeable. The senator had nald a'member of that committee had come to him to negotiate about the daty on suger. ‘Negotiate" was the proper term to use because the whole of . fhis tariff legislation on which the senste has been engaged for a month past was onducted on commercial prirniples. I'he senator from Loutsiana (fones) had & right to complain of the trea:- ment he had recrived, for ho had probably relied upon the old saying, **There's honor among thieves,” Van Wyck sald he rised the word “thieves” in the Piskwickian sonse. [Laughter ] The senator from L ous. tans might have well been suspicious of the high pro- tectionista oast, but he might depeud upon the high protectionists of the northwest. They would re- member his vote to keep the duiy on lumber. ¢ Like little men” they wiil vote for his sugar tax. Senstors might amuee themeelves by this pretenee of legislating for the public, when really were only ‘“‘negotiativg” with each other for the benefit cf highly pro- teoted interests, but the people would no\ be decesived. At the conc'usion of Senator Van Wjck's epasch, Senator Brown re- marked the senate had been continu- ous sesslon for eleven hours, and as the senator in charge ot the tariff bill seemed to be in very good humor, he would ask his consent to adj.urn, Senator Morrill (alluding to Sena- tor Van Wycks remarks, delivered with yreat antmation of e and ges- ture) sald, ‘I am always in good ha mor when I have an opportunity of attending opera bouffe.” [Laughter | The senate adjourned. After the ‘O a pro Nobis,” in which Miss Lincoln’s rich and cultured volce filled the church with its fesling and power, and wae admirably seconded by that of Miss R secrans, Father J. J. Murphy, «f the Soclety of Jesus, and president of Gonzaga coilege, mounted the altar steps and instructed Sister Gabrielle from the text, ‘‘Hearken, oh daugh- ter and see! Incline thine ear! For- get thy people and thy father's house! A king shall admire thy beanty.” He told her how she had come to make the sacrifica (f all there wan in this life to God, in her vows of chastity, poverty and obedience With an eloquence whose simplicity was {ta chief charm, he told her she was not literally to *‘forget the holy affections of the fam- {ly or her father's house,” but was to sanctify the memory of them by offer- ing them to God, She might, he said, in virtue of her vow of obedience, have her household duties to attend to or be engaged in teaching not pure- ly religious works, but these could bes made beautiful by her devotion of them to the great honor and glory of God, even as ‘‘cloth of gold” so lovely to the eya was upon close inspection & ground of close material upon which glden thread umpon goldea throad ssillfully woven, comp eted its ex quisite work. Her duiy done, “A king should admira her beauty—the iwterior beauty of her soul.” The instruction over, Sister Gabri- oy read her vows in a low, distinot voice, and was then ledto the window by two sisters of the black veil, Father Murphy, who was fully vest- ed, approaching onthe outside to com- plete the ceromovry. The sisters back 10 the chapel, with lighted candles in their hands, chanted the responses in a low, pecullar way, in which melody evidently was not consulted, but with a woird and solema effact that car- ried one's thoughts far back into the centurles. The consent of the com. munity being formally asked and the response given, the ocandidate was duly invested with the orcss, which was put around her neck by a chatn and the black veil Then the of- ficiating priest sald in substance: ‘‘Stster, thou art dead to world; dead to thyself. Live only to the Lord.” The sister then withdrew a few pacee, prostrated herself, and was covered by other sisters with & black veil, as a pall is covered, Then, after chanting, the priest said, subatantially, ‘“Awake thou that sleepest; come from the dead. The Lord shall onlighten thee.” Agiin approaching the win- dow, a lighted candle was placed in her hand, and she was given, with proceribad ceremonies, the crucifix which the eisters of tho order wear in their belts, After iocerso and prayer, the priest concluded with: ‘G, sister, aud God have mercy upon thee. Abide in the house which he has preparedfor thee,” Abridal crown of orange flowers was placed upon her over the black veil, and she was loft koeelivg, with lighted candle in hand and alone, as at first. The mass which follownd was celebrated by Father Denny, S J., of 8t. Aloys- ias’ charch. The muslc was again exquisite. The sister received the sacrament of the holy communion, As the deeply impreesed little congrega- tlon dispersed it was a significant and elcquent thing that the coavent bells rang out, summoning the sisters to their datly labor, while several bright eyed littls girls with their school books came skippiog and laughing upon the soone.
