The President laid before the Senate to-day a communication from the Secretary of the Interior in relation to depredations on public timber lands in Montana, Also, a communication from the Postmaster General in response to the Senate reso- lution asking for information in regard to the Ocean mail service. Also, resolutions of the legis- lature of Nebraska asking for the admission of Canadian lumber free of duty, and commending and thanking Senator Van Wyck for his efforts to put lumber on the free list. Mr. McPherson presented resolutions of the leg- islature of New Jersey, remonstrati rainst the transfer of the life-saving service to the Navy de- artmen' oar Sherman, from the committee on finance, reported the joint resolution to admit free of duty monument to Gen. GEN. GRANT AND THE MEXICAN TREATY. By invitation of the Senate committee on foreign relations Gen. Grant, Commissioner Trescot and Secretary Frelingiuysen appeared befora that body this morning to explain and advocate the rovisions of the Mexican reciprocity treaty. Gen.
