The Pilot mills of fogerty and the tubing works of a A, G. Cortis & Co, are in danger. A high wind i3 blowing. Later —The rolling mlills are a total loss. The Pilot mills are now burn- ing fiercely. LATER TELEGRAMS, Comnogs, January 6. —The fire is now under control, Morrieon Colwell & Page's rolling mills, O'Brien & Powers’ knitting milisand the Patrick Gagerty paper mills are totally destroyed. The loss will oxceed $200,000, Insured for two-thirds of the loss. THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE, TCooks, January 5, —The fire origl- nated in the wheel pit of the rolling mill. Work was suepended last Friday for repairs and waa to bo resumed this morning. During the sevare cold last night the wheel was fruze in the pit. The enginver began thawing it out by the usual process when by some acci- dent the o1l cuught fire and the flames sproad with most wonderful rapidity. The firemon did splendid work and suocessfully diverted the fire from the ocentral portion of the city which in- cludes the great knitting manufacto- ries. The flames drove the workmen away 80 quickly that they had no time to think of drawing the furifces, hence the loes is much greater than it eth- erwise would have been as the iron will now have to cool in them and they will then have to be taken apart. The total loss on one rolling mill is now estimated a: one-half a million dollars The insurance ls $76.000. The flames were driven to the Pilot mills which were soon enveloped, The loss on one mill {s §100,000; ;insurance 75,000 Powers & O'Brion's mill occapied a portion of the Pilot mills building and is involved in the gen- eral ruin, ‘Cho loss is §30,000, partly fnsured. - A Rope About Our Necks.
