Harry Oarpenter Oonfronted by Two Women Claimiug to be Hia Wives, The Grand Jury Find an Indiot- moent Against Him. There has been fome doubt felt and expressed as to whether the Virginia wife of Harry J. Carpenter, now lying in jail here on a charge of bigamy, would appear againat him, She ar- nved here, however, Friday night, and Saturday moraing visited police head- quarters, Officer Edgar accompanied her to where the Council Bluffs wife was, and introduced them to each other, Their meeting was more cor dial than is usual in such cases, they exchauging an affectionate kise, and entering av vnce upon & confidential chat and narration of experiences. A little fater in the day they visited the court house together, and called at the jail. Officer Edgar oalled Car- penter to come to the gratvg, but the lester on spproaching nofced whe wae there and beat a retreat. He was ordered to the front egain, and com- plied in part; bt kept n's face turned wnide, until vhe otficer spoke to him protty sharply. As he turned his head the Virgitia wife said: “‘Hello, Hurry, that's yon, is it]” The other wifo remarkod: *‘Yes, that s Harry.” Having fully identified him, they repaired to the grand jary room and there gave their evidence, on the hear ing »f which the jury found an indiot- ment for bigamy, which was reported to the court, Oarpenter is said to be thirty-one yeara old, though, in procuring a marriage license here ho gave his age as twenty-elght years. He formerly lived in Wheeling, West Virginia, near which his mother still resides, The Virginia wife marrled him about eleven years ago. She was a nchool girl at the tims, a daughier of agroceryman named Honry Rob- inson, Her father had placed her at a female college, intending to give her a thorough education, but she be- came infatuated with Carpenter, and was married to him. They had four children, two of whom live with their mother, and the other two in a chil- dren’s home at Wheeling. Carpenter kept a produce store and fish market there until about three years ago, when he left the cily suddenly, it be ing claimed that he had become sadly involved by gambling. Carpenter wrote his wife that he was going to Sandusky on business, and sgain wrote her from Co'umbus saying he would return soon, but she hesrd no more from him, until the correspondence opened leading to fis arrest in the eastern part of thin state. Carpenter appeared in Council Bluffs as a clerk atthe Western house, aud here formed the acquaintance of Miss Rachel Stevens, whose widowed mether lives on Pierce atreet. The girl was only sixteen, and becoming infatuated with him was married to him a few months sge, He suddenly disappeared about the time that she discovered herself to be in a condition most needing & husband’s care, In her efforts to find him she wrote a let- ter to his mother, Mrs. Ellen Carpen- ter, in Virgin's, telling her the cir- cumstances. Btrangely enough his Virginia wife's name isalso Ellen, and the letter fell into her hands instead of the mother's. She replied at once, telling of her ¢xlstence, and asking particalars, From this oorrespondence resulted the arreast of Carpenter., He had written to his wife here from Bi marck, Iowa, near Burlington, s ing his name Harry J. Montague, and Officer Edgar being sent thither ar- rested him and brought him to this oity. He will probably have his trial at the present term of court, and it is difficult to see how he can manage to escape from the punishment which seems ready to drop upon him, 1t is understood that thers is some bitter feellng hetween Carpenter’s mother and his Virginis wife, and that on account of statements made by the former the wife intends commencing suit against her mother-in-law for de- famatlion of character, Have you been to Brackett's? BOL> ROGUES. They Fleecs an O1d Gentleman Out of 8 Fat Roli of Money. A very bold confidence game and robbery was played auccesefully on the incoming tratn on the Chicago & Rock Island road. The victim was & rather elde:ly gentleman en route for Columbus, Neb,, with whom the sharpers fell in conversation. They represented themselves as merchante, who had baen to Chicsgo boying goods, and while chatting along ‘‘the ex- pressman’’ came in as usual in turning a trick and demanded somo $40 ex- press charges, The vlctim was asked to lend the amount, and the usual profter of a check was made, which was drawn on a Columbus bank for $900, and facotiously vigned *‘Chairs & Tables.” The victim was induced to lend the required amount on this security and as he was counting out the money from his pccketbook, one of the sharpers grab- bed the pocketbook saying that they had got to get off there to mee tbout the goods, and he could draw the dif- ference on the check when he got to Columbus, another pulled the cord putting on the sir brake, and the crooks jumped the train, taking the entire amount of the paesengers wealth, sbout $180. The officers here were at once notified, and they have kept on the lookout for the rascals since, but of course, without capturlog them. There are a number ot crooks hang- ing about the city, any one of whom would be likely to do such a trick, and yet they are so slippery that 1t is dif- ficult to catch them in any spacific act, The clty can be madeico warm for them, however, if they were prosecut- ed for vagrancy, as they well might be, for the city ordinance provides that ‘‘All persons having the reputation and character of being cappurs of gamblere, all persons hav- ing the reputation of being ‘‘thre card monte men,"” etc., are vagrants, and as such lisb'e to a fine of $100. + If arrested on such a charge, even if not convicted, these fellows would soon get out of the way, as they dis- like the publicity arising from such arrests, but it seems as if it would be novery difticult matter to convict them, »s there seews au abundance of ovidence to show that they have the reputation of crooks, at lenst, and it would remain for them to show that they are engaged iu a legitimate busi- vess, which would give them a tight piuch, Dealers in Toyr, Fancy Goods and Musical lnstroments wilt find tho largest and freshest wholesale stock at Mueller's Music Hall. declb.6t L Seekers and lovers of the weed will find their wants well ruopliad at Tem pleton & Lamb's, 232 West Broad- t Harkness, Orcutt d13ef Save your money by buying horse blankets and lap robes at C, J, Beck- men'z, 330 Broadway. . -— Musquetaire kids in street and party shades at Harkness, Orcutt & Co.'s.
