THE RETURN OF THE RING, Yestorday's Ber chronicled the faot that O. B. Hungerford, traveling for a jewelry house, had lost a valuable diamond ring, which had been stolen from his room at the hotel. A colored boy, Frank Washington, was arrested, it being believed that when he en- tered the room to build afire he picked tho ring up from the dressing ouse, where it lay. Yesterday the chambermaid in cleaning up a room found the ring on a window-sill, and reported the fact to the cffico, The room in which the ring was found wasone which the loser of the rin, had ocoupied, but he had change: and been given another room, and several circumstances cause the belief to exint that the fellow who was arrested had become frightened, and had sent word to a partner of his at the hotel, telling him where the ring was, and bidding him return it slily to the man's room, and the latter in doing su made a mistako and put it in the wrong room, The ring is a very fine solltaire, and 18 valued at $300. Yes- terday afternoon an attempt was made to releaze young Washington on a writ of habeas corpus, on the ground that no information hac been filed against him, the officers having walted to see what the owner of the ring pro- posed to do about it, By a mistake of the attorney for the prisoner the order for the jailor to bring Washing- ton into court, had the name of Johx- son instead, and the jailor reported he had no such prisoner. While the mis- take was being reotified the chief of police filed an information against him, and thus knocked the bottom out from under the habeas corpus roceeding, and Washington still lies in jail awaiting a hearing, A YOUTHFUL THIEF, Yesterday the boy giving his name as Ed Inman, chhrged with stealing a revolver from a man named Morris, was before Judge Ayleaworth. The boy pleaded guilty, and claimed to be very sorry that he had done so. He i | olaimed that his folks lived in Dos Moines, and that he had already been in the reform school at Eldora for three years and o half, He said that instead of doing him good it had only made him worse, as he learned there all sorts of tricks and crooked ways. He promised not to make another break for the bad, and was sent down to jail for fifteen days. The theft was altogether inexcusable, as the boy was given a charce by Mr, Morris to earn good wages husking corn, and instead of working he proceeded to steal from his employer and then skip out, BarrLe Creex, Mich., Jan, 31, '79.
