A MESMERIST'S TRICKS. A White Man Sewed to a Negro with Gray Cotton Thread. Philadelphia Itecord, October 11 It would be supposed that 1f two persons wero sewod togather, cheek to cheek, they would scarcely be in a humor to eing the “Swoet By and By,” nor would it easily be belioved that two sane individuals would quiotly allow a third person to deliberately perform the operation of uniting their two faces with a needle and thread. Beoing, however, is_very near to be- lieving, at loast, and a large audience present last evening at the National theater witnessed Professor T. A. Konnedy calmly thread a needle with gray cotton and place the sharply- pointed little instrament in the morth of a colored gentleman with closed eyes standing on the atage. ‘The needle immediately reappeared in the center of the ebony jowl, and the professor seizing it with his thumb and dexter finger drow it through the flesh and insorted it in the middle of the cheek of a white man, also with scaled eyelids, standing beside the colored man. Tnserting his dexter finger and thumb in the mouth of the whito man, the professor again brought the needle to view and proceeded to make a second; a third a fourth, and one atitch moroe through the two open mouths, and neither of the subjects offzred the slightest protest. As soon 88 Mr. Kennedy had concluded, the parti-colored pair, thus temporarily Joined together, sang the following duet: Colored gentleman: e-e-t.” White man: “By and By-i-i.” C. G.: “la the sweet-eet-eet,” W. M.: “By and By-i-i.” C. G : “Weehall meet-eet-eot.” W. DM.: “On that heaven.ly sho-ore " Then the two men walked in oppo- site directions to keep their appoint- ment, and the connecting cotton arted, and they were agsin asunder. 'he professor snapped his fingers be- neath the ears of the men, they opened their eyes and moved to the wings of the stage in a dazed condi- tion. On being'questioned by friends on reappearing in the audience, both men declined to believe that they had been surgical victims, and would not be convinced even by the drops of blood on their cheeks. ““‘Golly,” said the colored gentle- man, ‘I jes’ went to sleep 'cos dat fel- lah tol’ me to; dat's all I knows till T woke up agin.” The white man’s ex- perience was similar, Professor Kennedy is a mesmorlst who apparently possesses an extraor- dinary power over his fellow-creatures. He avows most solemnly that he has no accomplices or confederates and that he holds bis wonderful command over other persons’ minds through a magnetism which he possesses and for which he caunot account. Laat ewou~ ing he illustrated the.gheatonce ho can enforco witk w T0W hand-passes, in sam—wat NUMOrous ways, e called one young man on the stage and re- quested him to become a rooster, The young man immediately complied, and mounting a chair crowed and clapped his arms in the most appro¥ed barn- yard fashion, to the intense delight of the audience, On being recalled to his senses he regarded the professor with & slightly satirical expression of countenanca. Another experiment of Professor Kenhedy waa the placing of a silver dollar on the stage floor, Sev- eral mon wero called upon and request ed to scramble for the coin, A rish was wade by hulf dozon mon and boys, but on account of an (to them) imaginary heat it possessed, not ono of the ecramblers could do no more than touch the dollar. The Professor re- moved the impression that the coin was hot, and one of the men gabbed and pockated the piece of money, but he did not go far before he evivced the strongest deeire to jump out of his trousers until he was rlioved by his uneasiness by the Profe who re- posscssed himself of of Bland, Professor Ko investization on scientific « and s willing to give seunces to any pereons who are skeptical of his power. Osne rather unpleasant experiment of hls, last eveniug, was the persuading an unfor- tunate negro to swallow a large dose of castor oil under the impression it “In the swe- tho part was wine, The mesmerist remaing at the National until the end of the week, “Pour on 011" L.
