WHAT THE REPUBLICANS MUST DO TO BE SAVED. Hon, Henry 8. Neal, chairman of the Housecom- mittee of the District of Columbia, reached the clty last night and will remain until the second session of the Forty-seventh Congress adjourns on the 4th of March next. Mr. Neal desires to have frequent conferences with the District Commis- stoners in advance of the session, soasto have mat- tersprepared affecting the interestsof the District, As to Tuesday’s elections he thinks the republi- cans can recover by 1884, but that the presidential candidate must be one who 1s not distinctively allied with either the half-breed or stalwart face Uon and who can unite both wings. The result in Ohio, he says, was brought about by apathy, and jousands of republicans did not vote at all. When the people are prosperous, as they now are,” said Mr. Neal, “they care very little for pol!— tics.” As to Gen. Butler, Mr. Neal thinks he will make @ good governor, and if the democrats can swal- low him the republicans have no cause to com- plain. The democratic majority in the next Con- ress belng so large Mr. Néal thinks it will have the tendency to make the democrats careless. Speaker Keifer Does Not Despair of the Hepnblic. Speaker Keifer will remain in the city three or fourdays. Mrs. Kelfer 1s detained at home with sick relatives and may not come to Washington until after the Christmas holidays. The Speaker is of the opinion that the republican party will be able to overcome. its present defeat, and can be resuscitated in time to gain the Presidential vic- tory in 1884. Society Notes. Mr. J. The Case of Frank Hi. Fall. A LIVELY SCENE IN COURT—COUNSEL A. B. WILLLAM3 ACCUSES COUNSEL WELLS OF LYING—WILLIAMS FINED FOR CONTEMPT OF COURT—FALL'S BAIL FIXED AT $4,000. The case of Frank H. Fall, charged with at- tempting to corruptly influence star route juror Brown was set for hearing !n the Police Court at 11 o'clock to-day. Ex-Governor Wells and Mr. Brewster Cameron arrived some minutes before that hour and spent the intervening ume in ar- ranging papers on the counsel table. Mr. Fall shortly after arrived with Messrs. Davis and Pad- gett, of his counsel. Mr. Weils read the warrant, Which charged Fall with causing to be offered to Juror Brown $2,500 to influence his vote, hiring and procuring one Arthur Payne to make tle attempt. AN EXAMINATION WAIVED. Mr. Davis, rising, said that until the disposition of the case of Arthur Payne it was the intention of the defense to go into a hearing in this case. He understood that the opinion the court delivered in Payne’s case covered the ground in this case. He conceived the court would roach the same con- clusion in this case as in the other, and the defense would therefore watve an examination. Mr. Fall was prepared to give batl, but as his bondsman was unable to be present this morning he asked that the present bond be allowed to stand until to- morrow morning. ir. Wells said that it was undoubtedly in the wer of a defendant to walve an examination. He desired, however, to have the evidence spread upon the record of this court.
