T'he procession marched down Pear! street as a finwsh, having marched and countermarched on Brondway. At Bayliss park the kunights gathered about the band houag, and a time was devoted to apeech making. THE DOINGS IN THE PARK, Rev. A, Rogers, offered prayer, and John Chapman, on behalf of the cit1- zens of Council Bluffs, gave the knights a well spoken welcome, Chaas. M. Honle then delivered the follow- ing address of welcome: MR, PRESIDENT, GRAND CHANCELLOR, KNI6HTS AND LADIES: There has dovolv- ed on me by the mittee of arrange- ments the very pleasant Auty of extending to you & hearty and chivalric welcome on behalf of the lznlxhh of Council B uffs, It will be our endeavor to make your stay as pleasant to you as your entertainment most certainly will be to as, It is to be hopod that your deliterations may be ro ordered in wirdom as to result in great good to the order, and the cause of human- ity, You have come to us with your wav- ing banners, noddiog I:Imnen, and gleam- ing swords, *‘clnd inall of war's magnifi- cently atern array,” but your mission is one of mercy and peace, Too ofen under the banaers of the ancient Knights stalked the grim shadows of pestilonce, desolation and_ceath, but under the banners of Pythianism, is guarded and cherished that trinity of Christian _graces, Fuiend- thip, Charity and Benevolence. As the Knights of the olden time rallied wround the standard of Poter, the Hermit, and wearied not in their self-appoiuted taek until the COrescent had fallen before the cross, and the banners of the crusaders waved in trinmph over the mosques and temples of Jerusalem, o it is your duty to persevere until Euu have brought about a realization of tho central idea f Pyihian- 18m, the universal brotherhood «f man, and until everywhere its true virtues are known, honored and practiced. Your helmets and shields are not to ward off the lance and battle ax of the vindictive foe- man, but they are the emblemns of that armor of virtue whichshould be the pride and glory of true manhood; your gleaminy swords are not to drink the life blood of your adversaries, but they are the symbols of that sword of truth by which the de- fenses of errors are to be hewn down, and through which the liberty of law, religion and virtue is to be vouchsafed to man- kind, It is not your task to meet in battle on the ~ blood; sands of the tournament, and dye the colirs of your lady love with the life blocd of your adversary. It is your privilege to guide tho wayward, help the fallen, pro- tect the weak, visit the sick, bury the dead and care for the fatherless and the widow, In the fact of the existence of suffering and misfortune is found the ne. cessity for your organizition, Selfishness is the mainstring of human action, When one has fallen in the mad race of life, a hundred hands are outstretched to crush himn deeper where one is held out in sym. pathy. On every hand we behold e dence of wenlth aud povert , joy and sor- row, Seeing this at once realize 1hy ne- cessity of sume band of union, that shoul 4 be under the family circle, and stronger than the mockery of friendship Tv meet this want Solomon instituted the first of the great secret benevolent societies which wo find in_existence to-day. Nobly have they fulfilled the purpese for whin{ they were intended. They have gone hand in hand with the Christian church in advanc. ing civiization and in ministering to the auffering. ' Among the youngest of these is this or- der, Its origin may be traced back fifteen centuries to one of the grandest kcenes in human history, when Pythias offered his life for his friend, » soene that has but ouo counterpart, and supe for in all the glories of heroism, and self sacrifice thronghont tho agor, and that one the scene on Cal vary. Throukh the Jights and shadowa of succoeding centunries jthe memory of the friendship and virtues of Pythiss was kept green in the hearts of every lover of liberty and virtue, At la.t when in the fullness of time the veil that hid the western world from view was lifted in a new land, which the foot of the tyra t had never prossed, o new order was horn bearing his name and intended to perpetuate his fame and virtues, The order of Knights of Pythias was or. ganized nineteen yours ago, when the na- tion was in the throes of a gre .t rebellin As in the days of old the Tainbow cneir- sling the mouutain was & promise and plecige that never agaln shonld the deatrue: tive deluge prevail, so in those days of darkness and {eatitution the arch of Pyth- {anism was token that never »gain should the fires of hate and sectiobalism sweep over this land, It was & foreshadowin of the time when our prople should haye 'earved friendship and }urlnu anee through themstrumentality of Pythianism and when Blue and Gray should unite at its altars in learning unity and obedionce to law, ‘The chief corngr stone of Pythisnism is “Do unto others as yo would” that others should do unto you.” Tts laws may be found in the cowmandwents that were written on tablets of stone by the finger of the Most High, Its principles may be traced to the Beatitades, Tts objaot 1 to inspire in the heart reverence to God, loy. alty to couctry, friendship to your broth. ers, charity for their faull ‘nnu\'uleuce b There is in its teach: ict with your daty to Juntry, to your neigh- your Ged, to your bor or to yourself, No one'can become indired by itsteach- ings without becowing wiser, better, hap- pier. You are tsught the purest, holiost friendship. You are taught to avoid the pit- falls that heset your path in life, and. to courageously meet danger and diffiulty, You are taught that right, justice and vir- tue will surely teiumph, avd that the time will come when the Privce of Darkness will bend the knee before the sywbol of the cross. Inthe days when the sun of prosperity is shining, you bave but a faint ides of the power of Pythianism, or its ioflaence for good. ‘But when the days of desolation aad sadnws bave come, when the hand of sickness and death is laid upon you, it comes to your chamber and with & " touch negentle asa mothe:’s wipes the death dawp from yonr brow, and does for sau all that friendship stion and relf snc- vifics ean sugest, and when at Jact the final summon: hes come §c cares for the widow and educates the orphan. Aniwa- ted by the principles an- inscired by thes: teachin, it hos in less than a soore of year grown to be second t) nome of the great benevol, nt organizitions, Ita fature an be limited alone by the charac'er anc will of its membership, It is to nan plessure and a pride to belong to an _or. ganization having anch an origin, inspired by the princivles, «n ed with this his- tory, and crowned with such prosptcts of succors. May we ¢ll so live that when life's fevered dreams are o'er, and the fuystic veil that hides the hereaftor i lift- ed, our names may o enrollel on the ros: ter of the Sapremwe Lodge ahove, Acain, and chancellor and re: re entatives, I id you wele me to Couneil Bluffs, Hon. Juhn Van Valkenburg made the responso, and_delivered an elo quent, earnest address, in which he paid a tribute to the hospitality of the city, and the Kuightly attention re. cetved from their brothers, He show- ed himself a worthy spokesman for se worthy a gathering of visitora, At the close of his address, W, R Vaughn gave the announcement of the banquet and ball, and the gather ing dispersed.
