UP IN TEE OLOUDS A Carriage Ride Over the Sierra Ne- vadas by Moonlight, Philadelphia Pross Virainia, Crry, Nev., October 4. — About 11 o'clock inst night I started with a party of gentlsmen and ladiee, for a carriage ride over the mountain the Alps of the wostern world—the Sicrra Nevedis Loaving the city, the whole length of which is about 1,000 yards—not much of a tc you will say—-the ascent was immediately commenced, which was continued for about five miles over a besutiful mountain road, that bad been builf at great expenso for the convenience of merchandise and passongers by stages and other vehicular conveyances previous t) the buliding of the railrond. This road is a8 smooth as a floor, and so even do you ride that you can ecatcely be- lieve that you are ascending an angle of nearly fifty to sixty degrees Along this road, the edges of which in many places, overlook ravines and ocanyons hundreds of feet in depth, around which it shoots in sharp curves 80 abrupt that it would appear dan- gerous to go at & walk, yet the stage coaches with from twelve to fifteen passengers and their baggage used to dash at night, sometimes with no other lights than those on the coaches, at the rate of a mile in three minutes. Should a brake give out, or the harness prove unsound, away would 0 the whole load of humanity, hurled nto a canyon or gulch to meet certain death on the cruel rocks below. Yet such accidents have rarely, if ever, happened. Ascendirg this beautiful steer, on every side one beholds the tunvels and oponings to pits made by man to get the yellow earth, and tlirough the gulches on the right and left as you alternately wind round the defiles I could eee rising in the distance moun- tain on mountain three and four lay- ers deep, and miles and miles away, while every now and again the beauti- ful full moon creeps and peeps from out the dark and threatening clouds and gilds the heaven and earth wich its silver linings of reflacted light. DEAD MAN'S POINT. In half an hour the top of the mountain had been reached. We goon came to what is called ‘‘Dead Man’s Point,” as o sudden turn in the road that begins the descent to the opposite side of tho mount is callod, where, in former days some robbers stopped a traveler to rob him and made off with the unfortun- ato man’s wealth, His body being foudd there gave this ominous title or name to the locality, ‘This spot was also the scene of & daring robbery of a stage conch containing a lady and twelve passengers. As the horses turned the curve in the road the rob- b.rs seized the lead horses, bringing the other four to a halt, and covering the stage with their double-barreled guns, commanded the occupants to surrender. The men, who did not feel like disputing the matter, woro filed out of the coach on the roadside, and the lady was politely led to a‘stump on |'which she was seated, while those who were not covering the men with their guos proceeded quietly and leisurely to blow open the eafe in the coach, secured the arms and valuables of the passengers and made cff. The spot where the stump had been was point- ed out by the driver. Just beyond this I could see our destination, “‘Steamboat,” which appeared to be about a quarter of a mile away, but was really six miles. Steamboat is a railroad stavion on the Truckee rail- road, is 8o named from the fact that there is located the Sulphur Springs. The steam arising from which out of a barren piece of land looks exactly like the smoke of a steamboat as seen steaming along a river or other body of water. Awmong these mountains aro whole citics that once were the seats of wealth aud much trade, now entirely destroyed, the only inhatitants being a few stray cattle or domestic animals who failed to leave or be carried away by the departing citizens. Even the Indians will not occupy ths houses, having a superstitious fear that they will fall in upon them., With the crack of the whip the carriage was again on the move, and without in cident worth chrouicling it pulled up at Steamboat, where was eerved a light lunch which I did tull justice to, as the ride and moun- tain air had sharpened my ap- petite. After a short rest the return trip was taken up. Our course was directed to Magnolia, which is the foot of the Geiger grade, the road leading up the western side of the hill, & continuous uscent of nearly five miles; theground around us is scarcely ever covered by snow, witile st the top of the mountain, to whioch we are going on our return, will sometimes have twelve and fifteen feot of euow, A VISION OF THE SEASONS, As wo came up the sun was just rising above the hills in front of us, The sky beyond was light and silvery, while the red glare of the rising sun upon the hills and plaina and long .m stop, aud over Ionn.'-n- mugs deank to the folks at hom RIS The Conntry Who that has ever Jived anytime in the country but must have keari of the vir taes of Burdock as & blood prifior, Bk DOCK BLOOD EITTKRS oure dyspepaia, bi jonsness and all disordera ast om im. pure blood or deranged liver or kidneys, Price, $1.00. b THE HOME OF THE ZUNIs A Visit to Their Chief Puchio Habits of the lndians Correspoudence of the N. Y. Tri ni is the largest puebio I have yot It numbers about 1,500 people, and is €0 compactly buiit that the on tire village does not cover more t six acres of ground. T had often § that the atmosphere in and about Zuni was rendered very disagrecable by rea- aon of the pungent odors constautly arising, and which are duo to the waut of care in tho prople’s habits, There were evidences of 8ome preparation to receive the party, but the odors were there in ample sufficiency In addi- tion to tho want of cleanlineas and de- cency in the daily life of men, women and children, sheep and goat corrals are built adjoining the village within thirty foet of some of the dwellings, The pueblo is one massof adobo build- ings, Thoy are all connected, and though in most parts they are only one or two' stories high, there aro some throe, and the high- est point near the center of the willage 1s five stories, I ascended tothe roof of this building by means of lad- ders on the outside, going from one roof to another, The roofs n.ay be reached by means of ladders from the ground trom the exterior or by enter ing a door and ascending by the same means on the inside, each roof having a place of exit. I saw only one flight of steps. It was very short, consiat- ing of about & half a dozen made of mud, and was on the outside of% house. The living rooms are gener- ally of pretty fuir size, some of them being as much as twenty and forty feet. Floors are of adobo or flat stone, while the ceilings over the first floor are supported by heavy -pine beams and are about eight feet high, A cloae layer of sticks of euflicient strength is laid across the beams as support for the floor above. In the first room I ontered a woman was painting pottery previous to putting it into the kiln for burning, Thuir pot- tery designa are chicfly imitations, and they have no picces coentaining any mark denoting antiquity that T could learnof. 1 watohed them prepering a small kiln of pottery for burning. Their fuel for this consisted entirely of dried cakes of sheep manure. They rest a piece ot pottery ou three lumps of the manure, fill it with small bits of the fuel, then take another piece of pottery and eo on, until they get it all arranged, building in a circle and efter completely cover ing the entire pile with a layer of manure they ignite it. 1t takes from one to twohours to burnis thoroughly. range of towering mourtains behind was grand in its beauty and sublimi ty. The flaccy clouds with silver lin- ings wore decke? with golden hues by the sun, and if they were placed in the heavens as symbols of the precious metals of gold and silver which are to be found huudreds and thousands of feet within the bowels of the hille over which we wero then driving, As we rose higher on the Bierra Nevadas and looked back, we could behold the three seasons, repregented by the snow-clad hills in the distance, show- ing eternal winter; a lower range looked like the spring just showing its verdure, and in the valley the life- glving grain and lucious fruits gave us sdmmer and abundance. Reaching the top, and repassing Dead Mau's Point, one could see before long ranges of hills, one of which was on- tirely covered with snow; another that could just be eeen, looking like a cloud on the horizon, I was assured was fully 200 miles away, The air at this point is eo rarfied that one can see three or four times as far as you can in your latitude, even at your highest point of cbeervation, Again the carriage is ascending the Ophir grade, down, down, down hun- dreds of feet to Virginia City, ap- proaching which as if to be reminded of home, we pass a collection of small houses, and a beer shop with a sign “‘Philadelphia Brewery' attracted my attention, where I induced the party In one room o young squaw was en gaged in combing the hair of an older woman. I am told they epend much time in this occupation, beingz very pround ef their bair, which is long, biack and glossy, In this operation the girl used a emall stick about the 8izo of a match to part the hair, and spitting on 1t occasionally ehe brushed it with a rude brush made of yucca, or Spanish bayonet. In nearly every house is a trough, in one end of the living room, and in it are arranged from threee to five stones for grinding meal. In one place I saw a woman ‘“grinding at the mill” in Oriental fashion. 4 The gardens are beyond the corrals and in one common inclosure, with cach family’s patch of a few rods pir- titioned off by a low mud wall. There is one well for the community, it be- ing about fifteen foet in diameter, walled up and covered at the top, and ie approached by a deep cut or exca- vation to the water's edge. From thie they get all thoir water for house- hold purposes, aud much of that they use for irrigating their gardens, carry ing it in ollas or pots, An old church, built by the Spaniards gome 300 years ago, etill stands, though it is now in the tottering stages of decay. Tt is of adobe, is about 125 feot long by 40 wide, has a gallery, and in tho rear of the altar there is still carved wood work surmounted by a figure of the in reliove. This building has outlived its day of usefulness, aud it stands there a monument of the roal of the body that founded it, whilst the peo pleit was to aid in lifting up are, after more than three centuries, s ill votaries of the falso gois of their fathers, i Mirabile Diotu **Your SPRING Brossou is a success, I certainly think its effocts aro wonderful; all the dyspeptic symptoms 1 complaived of have wniu&led; my wife is also enthusi. artic in praiso of it; she was lisfigured by blotches and pimples ou her face, nd had a contibuous headuche, She is all right now and all unsightly eruptions have gone, You may refer any doubting parties to me, “R, M.
