COWBOYS ARIZO The Way They Have of Cavturing a oaloon and Startiog & Wid Lance —~Eilling & Mao Because He Made a Poor shot A Mock Uourt. Philadephia Thoos. TomBsToNE, Ara.,, October b —Ari- zoua 18 tuil of cowboys. Some of them are outlaws of the worat descriptton During the month of June laat the president of the United States issued a proclamation calling upon certain lawless persons in the territory of Arizona to disperse and threatening to call the military power of the govern- ment into requisition to aid the loval authorities in the maintenance of law and osder. The necessity for the is- suance of such a proclamation had its origin in the depredations of a cer- tain gang of outlaws undor the leader- ship of she famous cowboy familiarly known in tho tetritory as “"Curly Bill,” bat whose real name was Wiliiam H. Broscion. These desperate char- & tors had taken up their abode in the an Simon Valley, a beautiful scction of country in the extreme southern part of the territory, in what 18 now a | poriion of Cochise county. These | cesperadoes built themselves houses and claimed to be ‘‘ranchers” or cat- tlemen. At the northern end of the £an Simon Valley is the town of Cali- | fornia city, a ?lwa of several hundred | poputation. It contained three stores, u greater number of saloous, and some honest aud respectable cititens, The town, however, was often in the hands of the cowboys, and woe toa ‘‘tender foor”-- a term applied to all new com- ers in Yorder towns —~who happened in California City on such ocoasions, + It was & common thiogs for «ight or teu of these cutthroats to ride into Culifornia City, enter a saloon, pre sent apistol to the barkesper's head, and demand that the liquors be set out. As the fiery element warmed them up they would often secure a violin or banjo aud improvise a regu- lar “‘stag dance.” Eich fellow would select a partner from among the crowd, the musician wouid start up the ‘*Arkanss Traveler,” or sowe other familiar tune, and the leader wouid oall out “forward four,” and the dance commenced. When the figure ‘“balaice to your partner’ was reachwd many a fellow would “‘cut the plgeon-wing, and his partner, pat to bs outdone, would indulge i» 8ome fantastic steps, which would do credi to the most famed clog dancer on the min- steol boards, In the height of this reveiry would begiu a fusilade from revolvers. Baug! bavg! bany! and above the din the leader would be heard calling out, **Turn your part. nerg; promenade all.” The first tigure being fivished, avery fellow would Degin to Jook at the heels of his boots to see where the bullets went. The result would disclose that a large ma jority had been hit about the heel with a bullet, This practice of shooting at the hecls of one's buots is common among the cowboye, aud so accurate are they in their aim that an acaident seldom occurs. Bhooting the heels off one another's boots is a common recreation with them, Oo the occasion of one of these “ging dances” a cowboy who had re- cently joived the gavg participated iu the fusilade. On an examination at the olose of the first figure one of the . - found to be shot through tho | U'he festivities were sud denly swpped. The leader announced that an 1uvestigation would at once begin to ascertain the guilty party A mock court was convened, “‘Curly Bill” was solected for judge. Crone was made sheiiff. Tom Harper was chosen clerk, The sheritf arrested the new member as the guilty party. A prosecuting sttorney was chosen, and the court assigned counsel to de. fend the prisoner. In afew moments the proseeuting attorucy handed the clerk the imdiot- meut, end the court ordered the clerk dit to the prisoner, who was sommanded to stand up.
