DEATH TO DOGS. (e Jnhuman Way in Which They Are Being Die- poxd Of, Piandod 12 thie Pound While 1h ic Howls Disinrb the Neig hborhood. Under the present ordinance the togs, whose owaera fail to pay licens: ipcn them, 'are loocked up in the yoand, and after heing kept there for v fow days are doomed to death, if it clmmed, and the additional coste paid. Itis not the ordinance itsel/ that the atizens find so mach fault with, as the manner in which the un claimed dogs are disposed of. The jound 18 locsted in the heart of the Jity, being about a block from Broad- vay, jost south of the city buildi The howling of the dogs when hungry forms no delightful music, but it is a yweot harmony to the sounds which proceed from the pound when the work of slaughier is going on. The first lot doomed to doath were xecuted by beiug shot. Those who had taken ths contract for killing and burying the dogs at twenty-five conts each, wers poor markemen, and blazed away at the unfortunate canines, fow of the bullets striking any vital parts, and the poor dogs, runaing about whining, moaning and howling, until it seemed as they were being literally tortured to death by inchos. The bullets not having the desired effect, the finish of the work was with clubs, and the club then superseded the ficearms in the follow ing massacres. The last killing was done with clubs altogether, Ina few cases a well directed blow caused death speedily, but in others the dogs were pounded, and pounded, their torments csusing them to howl unul many outsidera and those living in the neighborhood wero almost as much tortured through eympathy as were the dogs themselves. One poor dog who was left for dead proved the next morning to be still alive, 1t is claimed still further by scme eouversant with tho facts that some young boys are allowed to participate 10 the slavghter, some as eye-witnesses and others as actual participants, and some parents hive been greatly shocked by having their youngsters return home with startling declara iions of how they helped kill the dogs If this is 80 it 18 needless to comment on the demoralizing influence upon the youths who share in such proceedings. Even dogs, numorous as they are, have some rights which the brute-man should respect, and such needless cru- olty shonld be stopped at once. If those whisa duty it 18 to slay the dogs cannot devise any epeedier and surer methods thau those afforded by poor marksmanship with a rovolver or bratal pounding with a club the dogs had better be allowed to run, ROWDYISH ROW. Suvdey Night Made Hideous By Whisky sud Muscie on Broadway There were several broils Sunday night, one at the beer garden, one at the trausfer, and two big ones on Broadway, The one near Pearl street drew 4 large crowd aud the most filthy talk and profane language was used, making night hideous indeed, and though the racket kept.up for some twenty minutes or more, no officers appeared and no attempt was made to quiet the same or disperse the crowd. L tec there was another row at John Nicholson's saloon, in which a number took part and several got marks of blood. No arrests were made, how- ever, at the time or immediately after- wards Officer Morse, whose beat lay along there, and Officer Brooks, who is on Main street, claim to have been off after the darkeys who had a row at the lower end of town, Theother officers on duty at the other end of town claim to have heard nothing of the rows However this may be, there were no stars twinkling about, and many citi- zeus were disgusted at the fact that such scenes could be kept up for so long & tiwe on the main street of the city, without a single attemnt to quiet it. Yesterdsy morning informations were filed against John Nicholson, Jack Shields, George Gerspachor, Charles Groves, Ei. Phillips, John Mack, and Cary, and several of these were arrested, but if their stories are to be believed the police arrested the wrong ones, They will have hearings this morning. ———— Economy: A fortune_may be spent in using inef fectual medivinos, when by applyin a) THOMAN KoLECTINO O1, & speody —an economical cure cun be eflxulmf. Yesterday forenoon a horrible rev- elation of infanticide was made, the body of a new born babe being found in a privy vault on Pierce street in what is known as ‘“‘rotten row,” A little girl first saw 1it, and reporting the fact to her mother, the latter went to the police station and informed Chief Field. Tae ohief in company with the city clerk and Tur Bee man repaired to the spot, and found it to be true. The body of the little one was removed to Morgan's undertaking establishment, and there an imquest was held, in which John Dann, O Wealey, and Mr. Jentry served as jurors. There wes little learned by the inquest wore than what 18 glven above, exoept what light was given by Dr. Beybert, who made » bperied post wortem eXamination, ] dootor gave it as his opinion that child had been dead six or eight dayk; that it had probably breathed after being boru, and that it was apparently a wulattq. There were no marks of vio- lvney found upon the body. Mra. Hasty who lives near the place where the body was found says that sbout a week ago, on ona rainy day, wo women came into the lot, and re mained for some time in the outhouss The next day there were some ind ca jons that scme wrong had been done, there beivg some maarks of blood, bu w the place was in a horribly filthy ondition, littl« attention was paid t. t except to haye a general scrubbing mt, Who these women were no one sema to know, and hence no very definite clue arose from this. The police are at work on some v her cluvs, and it is barely possible that 1t may yet come to light who the ieartless mither was that has thus muidered her innocent ¢ ffspring. This is the third case of materna! heartlessness vhich has ocourred here within a few weeks Ona left her child at the depot, and the Jittle thing now lies under the ground, as the re sult of neglect and desertion. An- other left her babe at a hotel, to b cared tor by stranve hands. Now © mes to licht a third who has delib- erately murdered her babe. It is to be hoped that the last of these at leas may be brought to justice. The chili thus tound so foully murdered was & Iarge and apparently healthy boy, quite light colored, but having some of the African type in his features, It scoms nothing leas than deliberate in- fanticide could have led to the dath The Stabbing Affray. Tur Bee yesterday ohronicled the fact that & woman had been brought to her home Nob,, having, in & row at that place, been qnite seriouely stabbed by an irate feminine, who was su inmate ot thesame house. bere from Fremont, The wourdes, which cunsist of a cut in the shoulder aud ovne in the breast, are not proving as serious as at first cupposed, but are atill suffi cient to coufine her to her house. The woman being respeotably connected here and having a child, whom she desires to shield trom any shame, it is doubtiul whether she will prose cute her assailant, all' concerned de- siring to rvoid undue publicity. The followire commuunication con cerning the affair has been reccived correcting THE BEE'S acconnt of the aff\ir in some minor respects: To The Editor of Tir B It is nota young Williams girl that got stabbed, bu arcied woman, and &8s to the landilady ring them out of doors, it i3 an untroth, The stabing was done in the houe, There was no v]\urrelingl TThis is by the party most concerned, wi- ing to contradict the statement of Tug Bek of the 23d, Fortunoes Mrs, M. New York Times, It bas finally been determived by the court of appeals that & person who couverts to his own use money or ar ticlea iutruated 10 him for a specific purpose is guity of lsrceny, The vencrally ascepted theory has been that such a person commitied a mere breact of trust, and could not be pun- ished criminally fur it. This theory grew out of a supp:sed affirmation by the court of appeals of a decision in iz Eogland in the case of the quesn agast Thomas, Ia that case the de feudant converted to his own use & quida intrusted to him to havo it cnanged. Justice Ouleridge held thar, as the owner of the cvin dia not expect to recieve it back, he had divested himseif of its entire pos- session, and therefore Thomas, to whom it wus givon for the purpose of having it changed, did not sreal it In thesummer f 1881 Robert Robinscn went into the sal,on of Heury Hen- derson, in Sixth avenue, near Tweniy- sixth street, avd took some refresh- ment, in psyment for which he hand- ed Henderson a tweuty dol goid piece. Honderson suid he had no change, and Robiuson responded, “Go and get some.” Leaving his siloon, Hencerson went to & gambling house and jost the coin at play. He was soon afterward arrestec, and in the court of special sessions, befoie Justice Morgan, Kilbreth, and Fismmer, was convicied of larceny aund sentenced to the penitentiary for three months. His counsel, Mr. Wiliam F Kintziog, procured his re- lease on bail, j@ di gan appeal to the supreme court, gsueral term., Bcfore the general terw Mr, Kuntzing argned that Henderson was net gmliy of lar- ceny; that Robinson bad given up all claim avd right to the twenty-dollar gold picce, and that Heuderson’s consersion to his own use of the coin and its proceeds was a mere breach of trast. District Attorucy McKeon contecded that Robinson haa purted only with the immediate pos session of the con snd not with the full possession of and property in if, and that therefore Hencerson was properly couvicted of larceny. The general term, Chief Justice Noah Davis writing its opinion, decided that no larceny had been committed, and that Henderson must be released. The sentiment of the court, as expressed in the opinion, was that the offense committed was lareeny, but the de cision was based upon the theory that the court of appeals, in the case «f Hildebrand aganst the people, had offirmed the ruling offered in the Q wen against Thomas to be the law of this state, Although Henderson was discharged and escaped from the control of the authorities, District Attorney McKeon carried the case up to the court of ap- peals, where he argued that, as Hen derson had taken the coin with a crim inal intent to steal it, he was guiliy of larceny, This view has been take: by the court «f appeals, aud is ex- pressed in an opinion written by As sociate Jusiice Tracy snd concurred in by the entire bench, SilMivan & Fitagerald, DEALERS IN GROCERIES, - PROVISIONS, Crockery, Glassware, BOOTS, SHUES, ETC Also agenta for the fofiowing lines of Steamship Companies : Cunard, Anchor, Guion, American, and Btay Steamship Gompanies DR AFTS s | Por sale on th oyal Ran ' of Ireland and Bauk of Ireland, Dublin.
