The La An Interesting Sescion and the Time Fully Em- ployed Saturday. At 0:15 Satorday there was a dovotional meeting, led by Brother | Sayles. At 9:30 tho topic of “College Aaso ciations” was taken up, and the dis- cussion was opened by Prof, David- son, of Crete, At 10:45 the report of the executive committeo was received, and referred to tho state committee, when such committeo shall ap- pointed, The report is as followe: committee to whom was intrusted the work of the association in the state during the past year, wouid respect- fully report that substancial progress has been made, without financial aid from any of the associations, and with limited means of all kinds, we have done the best we could under the cir- cumstances, With the help of Brother Robert Wetdensall, of the interna- new associations executive be Your tional committes, were formed in Beatrico, Hastings and Fremont. An association was formed at Weeping Wator, in all mak ing four new associations organized during the year. The associations at Doane college and the State univer- sity were also visited by Brother Weidensall, Brother M. G. Mec. Koon and Sceretary George T Houser., Members of the com- mittee visited several of the associa. tions during the year, All of the as:o ciations corresponded with the sccro- tary of the committee and tho liter ature of the association freely discri- buted throughout the state. There are now eight associations in the state, two of which are collego associations. There is but one general aecretary in the state. All of the association in a healthy condition and the out- look is promising, Columbus and Grand Island are now ready to organ- ize. Other points of promise present themselves. The field is largo and now gvlite for harve There 18 need of more systematic and energetic work on the part of the state commit- tee to reach the young men of our rapidly growing! state, and a corres ponding willingness on the part of the asscciations to co-operate with the are committes. Weo would therefore re- commend, First —That greater efforts bo put forth during the coming year to do velop existing associations. Second - That attention ba eapecial- ly directed to the larg:r towns where there are no associations organized, and that they bo encouraged to or- ganize as soon as an organization can bo effected. Third —That definite work for students and railroad men shall be Pmsecutcd more vigorously in the uwure. Fourth- That an increased amount of correspondence ard visitation shoula be done. Fifth--That the committee be authorized to raise $250 to carry on the work in the state during the year, and that as muoh as possible of the amount be made up during this con- vention, Sixth—That the committee be authorized to have published the pro- ceeding of this convention, together with a synopsis of the proceedings of the two former conventions, All of which is respectfully sub- mitted, P. 8. LEIRENRING, Chatrman, Geo, T. Howsern, Secretary. The question of state work was then taken up, and the discussion opened by Dr. Leisenring and follow- ad by Brother Weidensall, At 11 o'clock a paper was read by MNAULTS, L O O E S, o . 1020 Farnham Street, OMAEIA, - - - WNEE. C. F. GOODM.AIN, WHOLESALE IDEALEF TN DRUGS, PAINTS, OILS Brother Hansel on the subject of “Finance and How to Manage Thew.,” The idea of the paper and the drift of the diecuesion following was that there should be a definite plan of some kind for raising money. Then exer- fuced at different intr timee, passod ho Louse but were killed in the con ‘e iy Senator Hitohcock, Since t time 1o eflort has been made to o abuse, corree A portion of these ands have been sold and o course the ASOTS AT0 PAY'DE taxcs, Just as a8 an - individual get taxation sets in with a « larity. The technteality whi this injustice possible 1 plained in these columus o but that it may ba gencrally steod, we will again refer t was tho object of the g imen the railroads to p of all their lan there wasinserted in the ter of 1864 a clause w t road could not patent on any piece until the fees for su had been paid. Of urse, the land could not be taxed until title to it had passed from the governmont, wnd although the equitabls title to the Tand was vested in the railroad, yet uutil patent waa issued the legal title remained with the government and the land could not be taxed. Here then was an opportunity to avoid taxation The government would not issuo pat ents until the railroad had paid sur. veying fees, and as the railrond didn't want patents issued until they had s0ld the land, they simply neglected to pay the fecs. This clause 1n law was intended to protect the gov- ernment, but was converted iutoa loop hole of eseape for the railroads, There is no one matter that has ex- cited a_greater public interest than this, Every taxpayer rea) the un- pleasant fact that those who do pay tuxes, support those who do not. T'he roal ostate in Colfax county that is taxed, bears tho burden of that which is not taxed. This is wrong and un Jjust, and the one way to correct it is to send to eongreas men who have the honesty and courage to creato a remedy. Nevor too Late to Moud Thos, J. St Louls Globe-Democrat, Ewil Peppercorn, the betrayer of May Brahm, wus arrested on the street yesterday by Detective Hugh O'Neil. Peppercorn cams to this country a few years ago from Gier many, and finally settled down at Fort Calhoun, Neb. He was a civil engincer, but failing to ind employ- ment at his profession, and bemg a good performer on the piauo and organ, he taught music for a living, He had a wife but no childran, Among_other residents of the place wos a Mr. Brahm, a wealthy German farmer. Schuyler Sun, There has never been tmposed upon the taxpayers of this state, a groater injustice than that known as the un- patented land fraud, Through the merest technicality in the law and the absolute dishonesty or ignorance on the part of Nebraska's representatives in congress, the railroads have been allowed to escape the payment of taxes upon a large portion of their lands, The poor devil who owned an eighty- acre tract and was dependent upon it for the neceesities of life was taxed to the last fanh{n.‘, and if he failed to pay within a given time his land was sold and an additional tax of 40 per whole affair.
