W. Stevens, of this city, who has been the secretary of the American legation in Japan and now fs the American secretary of the éapanese legation in this city. ‘The legation will occupy the house on N street occupied by the former minister, Estimates have been prepared for the pay and mileage of the members of the Forty-eighth Con- gress. There will be 8% members and 8 dele- gates. For that pay there has been asked $1,665,000 and $25,000 for contestants. For mileage $1 25,000, 1s estimated, making a total of over $1,800,000. Goxp CeRTiFicaTes.—A transfer of $1,000,000 in gold certificates hasbeen ordered from New York to Philadelphia. Requests for these certfficates have been received trom Cincinnati for $250,000, from St. Louis for $500.000, and from Boston’ for $5,000,009, the latter embracing all the denomina- tions, These several requests will probably be granted during the day. Real Admiral Nicholson, com- ding the European squadron, reports ‘to the Navy department under date of Trieste, Austria, October 34, that the flagship Lancaster, having been caulked outside and her engines overhauled, will leave on October 4 for a cruise. Danenhower was asked to state, in narrative form, what preparations were made for the boat journey after the sinking of the Jeannette, and bega ‘On June 14th, 1881, the as- sortment of the provisions and clothing recovered from the ship was commenced, also the outfit and preparations of the boats for the journey. THE OOLORED WOMAN WHO ABDUCTED MABEL DYKE- MAN. Mabel Dykeman, a little girl three years old, was while playing near her mother’s home, 723 18th street, Saturday evening, enticed away by a colored woman under circumstances that platniy indicated a case of willful abduction. The woman Was arrested about two hours later at the corner of Fand 14th streets ond the child was recovered. The woman gave her name as Jennie Lee, and claimed she had found the child on Pennsylvania avenue, near 434 street. She came trom Alexan- dria, and has only been in this city a few months. This morning ta the Police Court the woman as with abduction, and pleaded not fr. Chas. 8. Moore appeared for the gov- ernment and Mr. O. 8. B. Wall for the defendant, who 1s an intelligent iooking girl, about 18 years old,and has some education. Mrs Maggie Dykeman, the mother of the abducted child,was present with the little girl Mabel, who was abducted. child is an unusually pretty and interesting child, and when the prisoner was called out of the dock, the ctid looked intently at her for some minutes, and then told her mother that that was the woman who had taen her away. Persons disregarding or refusing to obey the orders of the acting harbor master will be promptly, prosecuted before the Police Court. RAILROAD TAXES AND THE PUBIC e SCHOOL FUND. Commissioners have acknowledged the re- celpt of a letter from Gen. William Birney, presi- dent of the board of public school trustees, inclos- ing copy of a preainble and resolution passed by the school trustees at their meeting October 10ta, | and reply that in respect to that part of the pre- amble which refers to sums of money claimed to be due the District for educational purposes as a Tesult of the act of Congress of September, 1841, that they are pleased to have had tueir attention called to the subject. In regard to taxes paid by the Baltimore and Potomac rallroad company, us provided for in the act of May 21, 1872 they state it such taxes have been regularly pald by that company,and that the money has been as regularly | appropriated “exclusively for the support of the public schools,” at least the presumption is that it has been so used, as it has becn annually Included in the amcnnit of the school fund at te disposal of the predecessors of the school board and themselves. The Commissioners state that | they are of opinion that a claim would only exist | for that special (uad whenever the annual amount | appropriated should fall short of the amount col- lected, which last year was $3,906 75.
