An Ironclad Agreement Finally Sottles the Disputes Bs- tween the Railroads, The Union Pacific Gets 51 Per Cent, the Burlington 30, and the Santa Fe 10, History of the Differences Re- garding Exteneione and Percentages in Pust Meetings. The discussions of the meetings were concealed, the gen- tlemen insisting that everything was harmonious, but it is evident from tho protracted meetinge that some tangled propositions must have been brought up. At at any rate the fear of a preb- able cut in rates botween Colorado and the east is fiow dispelled for anotker year. The pool is roconstructed and now contains the Donver & Rio Grands as a factor. THE CAUSE OF THE TROUBLE. i It will be remembersd that a pool agreement has been pending for) .months; that the general managers at one time were hopelessly at sea and apparently irreconcilable, that the s uestions of difference wene referred to the presidents of the four great roads; that they in tarn failed to bridge the trouble, and remanded the +matter back to the general mauagers, with orders that they must cou to a compromise and agreement. All this time 1t was impossible to definitely asceriain the cause of the disagroe- ment, but the presumption was that it was owing, on the one hand, to the opposition to the claim for percentage made by the Burlington, and on the other, %o the demand of the Union Pacific people that the Burlington be not extended in Colorado or into thetr territory. At the meeting of the managers in Chicago about twomonths ago, and before the pool disputes weresubmitted to the presidents, the mansgers of threa Colorado roads et- fected a pooling arrangement, bu: when the agreement had been drawn up the Union Pacific manager refused to sign it, on the ground that it did not provide that the Burlington shoald build no more extensions into the Union Pacific territory west of Danver. The Barlington pe.ple em- postically refosed to enter into any such an arraugement and furiher ne- gotistions Were broken of, The coa- | stant four thet & war in Colorado ratee wonld ensue will also be remembercd TEE FXTENSION NISTAKE. Now it seome thet there was & mis- sppreheumion regurding the demund of s Union Puoidic people thet the Bur- Imgton should build mo more rods went of Dhenver. The Burlngion peo- ple believed that the Union Pucibe wanted to evag unoh « gladet for box yeare, the term of the oid “‘tripartite ent’’ between the Union Pa- otfic, Atvhuwon, Topeks & Bante Fe | sud Dopver & Rio Graude railweye, Sooatié the Tion Paoific pluced 6] clgim thet evch & clause sbould be in- | serted into the new agreement, for the reason that the old one provided that the roads should keep out of each other’s territory. The Union Pacitic people subsequently? claimed in the light of a partial excuse, thut it was not their intention that the Burling- ton should agree not to build any new lines into the Union Pacific tor- ritory during the term of the new agreement, which was only for one year, THE QUESTION OF PERCENTAG It appears that the Burlington pro- ple had no intention of building be- yond Denver just at present, but they did not propose to uccede to any terms that sounded like dictation, or any will receive 51 per cent., the Burling- per cent. This is the division made at the re cent moeting in Omaha, There re- rning the business, when one of the strong. est railroads pools ever known in this country will be complete. Yesterday the basis was also laid for between the Rio Denver & a pool Grande and the South Park. The managers had a meeting, came to a perfect and harmonious understanding and drafted the agreements, but owing to the latenees of tho hour last night, when the latter had been prepared for [signatures it was impossible to recall | the officiala intorested informa- | tion could be obtained to the per- | centages aied division of business, but it is said that the terms are fair and watisfactory to both roads.
