The Railroad Elevators in Iowa Pooling to Fleece the Pro- ducers. The Opposition to Anderson Gea- eral Items. Rep 04k, Iowa, October 9. To the Editor of Tur Bax, I have been most favorably im- pressed by the editorlals in Tur Brr on the labor question and believes that its course is approved by a ma- jJority of the thianking men of Ne- braska. I liked your endorsement of the resolutions passed by that Boone County Alliance, which have been, a0 freely comnmented upon by the state press. The time has come, when, if the farmers do not combine and take such steps in retaliation upon their oppreasors, they will soon place them- selves in hopeless bondage. The man whose action called out thesc resolu- tions, dic all in his power to injure the Allisnce by working for the mo- nopoly or railroad wing of the repub- lican party, and this while a member of the Alliance. That he met with his just reward when he was turned out of the organization no fairminded man can deny, and becausethis Alliancedid as any other order would have done under similar circumstances certain editors must needs howl vigorously. Of course in this they are but doing their master's bidding, the masters seeming to think that the Allance had set a dangerous precedent, which I most sincerely hope it shall prove to be. On this side of the river there is something brewing just now that may produce something more formidable than resolutions—more tangible than threate, For some time past the C., B. & Q. R. R. has been discriminating against certain grain buyers, and in favor of members ot an organization formed last spring, known as the ‘‘Grain Buyers' Associatiou of Southwestern Towa,” formed for the ovident pur- pose of squeeing prioes down to the Jowest possible notoh, The members of the associntion claim that it was formed for the pur pose of bucking the ‘rackmen’ or buyers who, having no elevator ex- pensee, could buy oad lots and overbid them a trifie. This claim is false, as shown by the fact that K. W. Btevens, owning the largest ¢levator and handling wore grain than all othor buyers in Ied Qak, can not got the sawe rates and rebates accorded to members of the AYBO neince the latter was formed, 'nlmnl_v hecause he refused to join it. When Mr, Stevens vitited Chicago for the purpose of everny tho higher oflicials of the company, personally, in regard to the matter, he was in- formed that nothing eould be done for ntw; that he need expect no tavors frow the company ae long as he re- mained out, but they would make it to his intercst to joun the aseociation, How is that for bulldozing! Mr. Btevens being an honorable man and wishing to deal honocably with the farmers, will not join the ring; and when the news of his cool reception became known, it caused great excite- ment. Meetings were held, Mr. Stevens’ course endorsed, and resolu- tions passed condeming the company's action, A grest many rumors ere current. One, that Mr. 8. has been ordered to take his elevator froia the company's ground, Another, that cortain buyers. members of the asscciation, had™ de- clared they could buy the growing corn crop if they were so disposed for 16c to 182 per bushel, and the proba bility is that if they are given the op portunity they will be so disposed. 3ut if the railroad company persist in backing such mon to enable them to skin the farmers as they propose, then I venture to predict that buyers will remain in business but a very short time, 1t is rumored also that the company have made an ar- rangement with our banks, whereby the latterare to loan money to farmers except for the purpose of buy- ing cattle to feed and the company to pay the interes: on the idle money in bank, thus to compel farmers to mar- ket their small grain crop at the pres- ent ruinously low figures. This can hardly be believed, but it has some show of foundation in the fact thatour bankers are making no small loans now, in faet no loans except on cattle, and wheat is worth 40c to 46¢ in Red Oak on & 90c warket in Chicago, As I naid before these are probably wild those | while In that capacity he helped to render a decision in one instance that, not only were the company not over paid but received hardly enough. sWe ‘‘catch on’ to that all right aud know that it is folly to look for any- thing like justice from a commission placed by law in the pay of the rail- road companies, and the extent of whose power is in reporting the mat. tor to the legislature. 1t is too slow a method. Our laws must be changed aud our only remedy then is in_retaliation for the present, and for the future, the ballot. But all the commission reports and lying editorials the ratlroad companies <can cause to be produced will fail to blind the people to the fact that they are continually robbing them and will still rob them till in their growing greed they will go one step too far, ignite a flame that will not only burn deep into the brain of every railway magnate this side of hell (all that are living), but will wake our lawmakers to the fact that something must be done at once, for the long-forgotten ople. But Anderson will be elocted this fall to represent’ the congressional district, for the party lash is being ap- plied constantly through lying edito- rials and railroad orators, and enough votes will boe whipped in for him or his capper, Pusey, to send him to ‘Washington. We have not been skinned enough to loosen party ties, but, judging from present indications, I think I am safe in saying that Anderson will be the last monopoly representative this part of Towa will send. coming to the front so well in Ne- braska, especially in the Third district, as I expect to become a constituent ot E. K. Valentine, but wish I were there this fall to add one more vote for M K Turner, T hope they will keep the ball roll- ing, and I judge from the present that the day is not far distant when Ne- braska will take the proud position of leader in the people’s cause, and say, woe be to him who throws aught in the way of her doing so. FARMER JOHN. Jacob H, Bloomer, of Virgille, N, Y., writes: “Your THoxas' Ecurormo O cured a badly swelled neck and sore thioat on my son in forty-eight hours; one sppli- cation also removed the pain from a very sore toe; my wite's foot was also much in- flamed—s0” much so that she cculd not walk about the house; she applied the oil, and in twenty-four hours was entirely cured.” SeliniciEnle Lo Storing Potatoes for :he Winter. Many of our readers have a surplus of potatoos this fsl, and not being aatistied with the prices offered, desire to store them in the best and most economical meshod, and take the risk of gotting a higher rate next spring. 1f you have & dry, well ventilated cellar of sufficient size you can scarcely do better than to store them there. It is an advantage, how- ever, to put them in large shallow bins made with slats, nailed an_inch or two apart, and raised a few inches trom the floor to allow of circulation of the air among the potatoes, One such bin can bo set upon another, if neceswry without injury, if o fow inches space 18 left between by means of bourds or seantling 1f 1t is necessary to store them in pita or piles out of doors, a_high, dry place should be chosen aud the spot should be seraped smooth and drained, 80 that no or can get i 1 tho heap o pile shonld be 4 1 cone in shape and should be covered firat with straw and then with earth, to the depth of smx or eight inches in alternate loyers. 0 or U It svems imponsible that a remedy mude of such common, simple plants as Hops, Buchu, Mandrake, Dande- lion, &c., should rake so many and such great cures as Hop Bitters do; but when old and young, rich and poor, pastor and doctor, lawyer and editor, all testify to having been cured by them, you must believe aud iry them yourseif, and doubt no longer, ] Draft-Horses vs, Bcrube. You must not be offunded if the host is off to his business without scoing you, for at 10 o'clock he will return and greet you ceremoniously enough. Tho breakfast, which is the chief meal of the day, is then served in courses. Fruit is eaten first, soup often follows, then meat, after that eggs and finally frijoles, the national dish, This last is a dark red bean, cooked with lard, nonzoned highly with red peppcr, and is served in a soup plate and eaten with a spoon, It fh very palatable, and +foreigners generally become as fond of it as the natives. The severe climate, exposure and tho sys- tem of breeding and feeding which have given to Scotch polled breeds their rugged character and unsur- passed capacity for making the best possible beef, and enduring the worst possible weather, have also given to the Cruickshank and other Scotch short-horns similar characteristi Like the polled cattle and the Here- tords, these short-horns are short in leg, tull and fine in lines, roomy in the | barrel, as all grazers must be, and carry a large amount of the most val- uable beef.
