Saturday evening s woman, with a baby in her arms, applied at Bechtele's hotel, on Broadway, for lodging, but all the rooms being taken, was re- fused. She asked Mrs, Bechtele for a little nourishment for the baby, and while the latter went to the dining roowmn after some milk, the woman dis- appeared, leaving the baby on a sofa in the parlor. The little thing is only a few months old, and was of course provided with the needful comforts until the author- ities could look about for some per- mauent home, for it is not likely that the heartless mother will appear and claim it, A similar Incident occurred here but a few weeks ago, a babe, even younger than this one, having been loft at one of the depots. In regard to the fire by which my stable and contents were burned on the night of the 4th, I desire through yourjeolumns tolmakea few statements of facts concerning the manner in which the fire department worked. In the first place the department was slow in reaching the spot, men on foot coming from upper Broadway and reaching there fifteen minutes before the enjines, There was apparently no one in command, the chief being absent, and when Pat Lacy, the old chief, tried to get them to act, he was greeted by such a response as ‘‘go to hell.” The Rescue stesmer got mired, and hence no stream was thrown by her, and most of the firemen put in their timo get- ting the engine out instead of working on the fire, The Bluff City steamer threw about two or three barrels of water and then quit. What work was done on_the fire was mainly done by the men belonging to the house and vicinity, and when the chief arrived he ordered the hose to be taken up and the apparatus to be sent back, The building and contents kept burn- ing until the heavy rain came Friday night, and a watch had to be kept nights, and water carried in patls to keep it down, the fire department neg- lecting to do anything to put out the blaze, It seems that the fire department is much of a farce if thia is the kind of work, or rather the lack of work, which is to characterize its manage. ment. There was delay in sending in the alarm as no keys could be fonnd for the box at the Rock Island depot. The council should investigate the manner in whioch the department is working, and if they doubt the testi- mony of relisble eye-witnesses, they are invited to attend the next fire in person, and see for themselves. A change is needed before the tax pay- ers secure the protection for which they pay their money. 0. R. MrrougLL, DR. C. J. CLARK. Twentyfour years experience in practical Gynaeology.
