The association has extended invi- tations to the teachers and scholars of the public and female schools and of the deaf and dumb institutes to at- tend free to-morrow. One ot the ofticers will visit the schools to-day and distribute tickets. A SLIGHT BLAZE The Fire Alarm System Not Yet in Perfect Working Order. Saturday night there was a slight fire at James Brewster's residence on Market street, the blaze originating in a clothes press. It was speedily suppressed without the need of the fire department, but the alarm was sent in from box 8. In responee thereto the department turned out, but a portion dashed down Broadway, while the others went up 1he same street, This apparent confusion called forth many expressions of criticism from the citizens, and some denounced the new electric fire alarm as a fraud. The fact is the system is not comple- ted yet, the striker not being finished, In the absence of this the alarm is caught on an instrument similar to those used in stock exchanges and brokers’ offices, the number of the box being registered by dashes on a slip of paper. When the alarm came in from box 8 the first dash on the paper was a long one, and then came the registry of the box proper by eight short dashes. The boys took t{lil for through the fair and will have headquar. terson the grounds. On his last visit here about September 1st, he wrote up a lengthy and interesting letter, showing up the advantages of Conncif Bluffs, and will write up the fair doubtless in sn equally readable manner, f Hou, Jokn Van Valkea. valuable services and w ity insured Ppetitor, was Tow Mr, Van Valkenburg w of almost two to one, his victor by a vote ing 1. Tt was an support cc from all parts of the Uni enviable distinction, gratifying to his many friends at home and throughout the state and elsewhere, worthily won and will be honorably filled. PICKED UP BY PEELERS. Numerous Offenders Who Have Been Gripped by the Law. New Btars Added to Field's Galaxy. In anticipation of trouble from the swarms of sneaks and crooks who us- usually gathor at fair times, special arrangements are being made to check, as far us possible, their nefarious do- ings. Already there are a number of suspicious fellows who have arrived, a8 possible, still with the usual police force it is impossible to guard all points, Mayor Bowman has appointed good selection ux possible, and it is though with this increased force the crooked ones will ba dragged into the net if they try any wily tricks, ter of eelf-protection, those who have spare money or money that they don't feel able to spare, should use caution in betting on other folk’s games, or investing in schemes which promise to give something for noth- ing, as they generally wind up by giv- ing nothing for something, Resi dents, too, should not leave their houses deserted, and thus atford op- portunity for prowlers and sneak thieves to plunder, Inthis way there will be little or no trouble, and the crooked ones will fly for more profita- ble quarters, A young giving his name as William Nowinan, made a brutal as- sault upon en ol man named Hufl- man on Broadway 5 «turday night, It appears that the old man was walking along peaceably enoush when he met Newman, who says he thought it would bs fon to smesh the vld man's silk hat. He tried to do this with his own hat, and then reiling up his coat, making a wad, and with this he thumped the old man eide of the head, knocking him down. Newman was arrested by con- stable] Fox, and taken before Justice Abbott. The young man claimed that he just wanted a little fun with the old man, but the vutrage was anything but jocose, and the justice promptly fined him $50 and costs, or fifteen days in jail. He took jail. Some of Newman's apparent friends begged for a lessening of the sentence, but Jus- tice Abbott very wisely remarked that | * if the victim was one of his own stripe, size and age, it might be different, but to thump an oid man, 72 years of age, was an outrage, and he would not take off a dollar nor a 18 instead of 8, and hence started for the wrongbox. When the striker is put in and the alarmsystem completed then all such mistakes wiil be avoided. Until then there should be patience and charity, Those who turn in alarms should be careful how they do it. The crank should not be jerked or turned around quickly and roughly, but handled exactly as the directions inside each box indicate, Much trou- ble can thus be avoided, also. LERSONAL. The clock peddler who kicked up such a row at ‘‘the blue barn,” and who got the worst of it, was fined by Judge Aylesworth, Saturday, and the orther parties in the affair discharged. Joseph Woodmyre was the drunkest Ofticer Morse could find yesterday, and he accordingly locked him up.
