THE DAILY BEE--OMAHA TAFFY. An Australian Speeial Commis- sioner in the Gate City He Thiuks It Will Be the I'u. ture Natioval Cap- ital, And Lingers Lowi Broad Streets and O the Big Muddy. A Pen Picture of nn American City and American Uitizons y on Its ver Hon, John Baumer, the connty clerk of Donglas county, has just received from his brother in Australia a copy of “The Town and Country Journal,” published at Wagga Waggn, a city situated in New South Wales, half way between Sidney and Mel bourne, The Journal is a handsome sheet, containing some fine illustrations and 1ots of news, but what it is desired to note par. ticularly is a letter written by a special commissioner who was seat out to make a complete trip around the world, He pass ed through Omaha during the winter and his letter is published on his arrival home, under date of July 15, 1882, Tt will prove interesting in more respects than one to the citizens of Omaha, showing how the Gate City of the West appears to an intel- ligeut foreigner. The special commissioner says: *‘Omahs, with which I think must be included Council Biuffs City on the other side of the Missouri, constitutes THE MAIN GATEWAY out of which the civilization of the east pusses on its way to the west, 1Itis true that the river is crossed at several places further north, and at still more further south, but tor the direct west Omaha will, asa matter ot course, remain the most portant. Omaba has water commur tion with Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, and Dakota to the north and st, and with all the states on the Missouri and Mississippi to the south, and as far as Pennsylvania to the east, Anyone glane- ing at ‘a map of the United ~tates can see what this means, and when it is realized ya from all points centre in the ¥, 1t will be seen that it is not alone to the fact that it is the direct route to Cali- fornia that is due the rapid growth aud great importance of THE GENTRAL CITY, It is the dream of the Omahans that in to come the wreat west will have suf. ficient voice in th irs of the nation to demand that the not be sheiled ! equally accessible to all legislator the heart of the vast territory represented, Then they believe OMAHA MUST BE CHOSE and the apotheozis of the city would take tlace. This is probably looking rither too far ahcad for most, but ¢ epectilate on the result, and in these s of marvellous progress *‘may-be,” cludes everything.” “‘Omaha, to the yisitor, presents at fir that scattered appearance 1ot all new cities, built where tbere is an abun- dance of room. A weil-built and closely tined street is joined hy one with here and there, beyond which will com BLOCKS OF FINE BUILDINGS and vacant lots further on still. This is always the natural consequence of the fact that land isin some spots held for specula- tive purposes and in others sold or used for building. I’ ndant room ahead also assists in the spreading, since if & man determined on building cannot get land at a reasonable rate close in, he goes further afield, and his stores and warehouses at once become the nucleus of a group of others, Those who hold lau for =pecu tive purposes do not in these western ies, as a rule, wait TILL THEY ARE GREYHEADED before they have an opportunity to realize profitably on their investments, the rate at which the cities expand wmaking the “‘unearned increment” rapid in arrival and substantial in amount,” “Our Jast car porter on the U, P. I, I, was a colored man, a merry-looking fellow, about 22 years old. Thesé car porters are, as a rule, obliging, civil, and entertaining, and well earn the gratuity everyone is jus- titied in bestowing, *‘Bob” was one of the best, and the commissary drew him into conversation on one occasion for our joint benefit, Bob said HE WAS A MARRIED MAN, bad been married about a year, and the “union had been blesse i at he bit of a yaller gal” he had ever seen, When he married, Bob had gone about a couple of miles from Omaha’s busy parts, and bought a cheap allotment, on which he had managed to get asnug little two-roomed cottage, and in connection with which he had estab- lished those desirable allies, a cow, a pi and a “flock of fowls.” He ‘‘guessed he'd bave to move mighty soon,” however, since the city had pretty nigh resched Lim, and it was not comfortable to keep the cow or the pig and their descendants. Moreover, he had been offered e price for bis block representing a profit on the original outlay of BIX HONDRED OR SEVEN N HUNDRED PEL CE) and he gueseed that in & month or two he should be able to realize enough to buy a small farm somewhere, give up the railway and settle down for good, This actly the facts of Bob's story dive the details and illustrations a3y completely i his flowery diction, and it gives a v a of the manner in which the march of the builder continues, There is no leveling or clearing necess.ry in this case apy more than in Chicago, and con- sequently all that & man has to do after obtaining a title to a block is to excavate foundations and run up a row of dwelling houses or stores, 'TI'he site oscupied by i's COITAGE, when we passed Omaha, is now in all prob- ability covered with sone four-story build. inga riot by any means on the fringe of the city.” “Omahnis well laid out; has wide streets, is well built, and is being vlanted with trees, Altering the first word of the sen- tence would make this description do for o dozen, or perhaps a hundred, other western towns; but age, narrowness, and crookeduess were ahead, and we LINGERED LOVINGLY over streets which suggested modern ideas and made us recollect with pride the ave- nues on the rocks and the roowy diives off Lower George street. The blundering and ignorance which blotted lovely spots with lulv{rinlhu like Boston or the old part of Sydney have had to move on, and the newer, as & rule, the new made cit, the better its condition as regards width and regularity of streets,’” Taking the Union Pacific ftrain for the east, the writer, after describing the bridge, continues: “We were rattled down to the bridge pretty fast but proceeded slowly across it, which was just what all could have wish ed, since the day was fine and bright, and bigh in air we could gaze without any in. termiption both north and south along the course of the wide white street which was THE SOLID SEA covering the bosom of the “mighty Mis. souri,” For some time only the flood land was directly under us, but very soon we came directly above the vast ice field, Here and there across it were tracks made by crossing teams, and it was difficult to realize the fact that it was not a snowy plain we were gliding above, Still more sndlike did the steam become when we saw a plow drawn by a couple of stout horses at work upon hese were cut- ting the pattern of AN IMMENSE CHES: ARD on the ice, cutting it into imuense blocks, 0 that it might be carted away to the rail. An Officer’s Situation. Detroit Free Pross, When the Michigan cavalry brigade was sont west to wallop the Indians after the close of the war, one of the companies in the Sixth was command- ed by a lieutenant who was hated by every man in his command. He real- ized this fact. and lost no opportunity to make it warm for the boys. One evening when the regiment went into camp o the banks of the Platte, far beyond Omaha, the lieutenant rigged nup a fisk line and slipped off down tho stream to try his luck. Rattlesnakes were plenty out there then, and it was well known that the officer had a hor- ror of them.
