Correspondenco of Tiw B, West Sk, Ta., 22.—From the time the railroad was built here in 1866, until 1874, at which time the town was laid out by the Ar town lot and land company, was n town here, Blair (i track and the brought in had previously pu of the sido that The establishmont and station at date, “staking out” of a town, the business men and Judge Lamp- Ithough he has long since retired, and is sup posed to have accumulated §40,000 while trading at this little town; and in fact most of the men who began man started the first store hero with small eapital, are worth now from £5,000 to §40,000. ago Win. Barger, a busin Philadelphia, during tho infant days of the town, owned 5,000 6,000 acres which has beon sold to bona fide sottlors, many of them Germans, while Mr. Barger is building a good resi dence in town and keeps an eye on the land market which 18 advancing. The town was Some years s man of or INCORPORATED five yeara ago, with its western bound- ary on the western line of the county, It has numerous goed brick blocks, large trading houses, many new build- ings, including the former class, the threo or four thousand dollar school houses, and several stores; and in the second class, soveral fine residences, aud tho city buoildings for town offices and the jail. THE SITUATION of the business houses along the side hill, which slopes back to the south- ward from the railroad in the Eaat Boyer Valley, the residences scattered beyond and to the right and left, as well as across the valley, forming al- most another village of residences, re- minds one of the ancient city of Babylon, which was really two cities, separated by a river, and each city sur- rounded by walls, although we have no account of anything Jike the West Side hills, within this Syrian Motro- polia in the valley of tho Kuphrates, The wonderful brick of Babylon were mado in the sime valley and the great basing formed by the removal of so much earth, became lakes and g the key to the capture of the city. But West Side bought its brick in Vail and Denison for thereis no per- ve manent brick yard here, although ‘‘the boys” are posted on most of the matters and have a good rifle team, TAYLOR AND JOHNSON have the pioneer hardware store. Mr. R. B. Taylor of this firm began here on the wild prairie, and for some time did business as Taylor & Waterman, and for years was postmaster. Mr. Johnson of this firm is a young man of business talent, and is deemed almost a living, wnlkmg ency- clopedia of the hardware business, and this firm of young men may, in some respects be called the ‘‘back bone” of the enterprise f tho place. They have a large building heavy stocks, good tin shop, besides valu- able financial interests in other classes of business. They do a business of about $30,000, which for this small town is very large. ‘They are offering their brick drug store for sale, and a good opening is presented for a drug- gist. BEHRNS AND GROTE] are the center of the general merchan- dise trade, Located in Lamb’s block, in the center of the business part of the town, with a monster store and mammoth stock they do a very large business that seems astonishing for a young town, Standing at the desk in the centre of the great square sales room, the departments of clothing, dry goods, hats and caps, boots and shoes, crockery and groceries are all outlined in groups, with the busy salesmen remind one of ametropolitan bazar. This firm also is composed of young men who are destined to keep up the energies of the trading elemens of the town, KEMP AND HOPE is a younger hardware firm for whom we predtet a successful and large trade ia the fucure. They have only been in trade a year or two, but they started witha good new stock and have a good assortment of everything from a tin teaspoon to an American or a Crown sewing machine, and they have a good trade and a growing prosperity. C. D. Miller, for several yearsa prominent. physician at Arcadia, be- came the proprietor of the EXCHANGE BANK two years ago, occupying the same building previously used by E P. Savage who only did an exchange bus- iness with the ueual collection and land office work. Dr, Miller does a regular banhing business, with collee- tions, loans and real estate, and has become a fixture of permanence, and another important centre of business. Cc al. The Ohio Republican association will probably hold a spectal meoting ot an oarly day to consider the ques tion of purchasing tho Garfield man. sion in this city for use as an Ohio headquarters, ~ The lotter which Judge Lawronce, presdent of the association, received this morning, from Mrs, Garfield, simplifios matters very much, The doubts in the minds of members of the association, as to Mrs, Garfield’s viows respecting the use to which the wansion should be put after purchase, long fictitious testimonials, have no foar. That Which Red Oak Propm‘!e to Open This Fall, Builting Boom and Politios Oorrospondence of Tus Bax, Rep OAK, Towa, August 25, — Every body in Red Oak seems determined to have a good fair this year. The com- pavy are domg all they can for the success o much expocted, and the peoplo seem to “‘enthuse.” The opon- ing is the 19th of September, The President, C. O. Platter, and the Sec- rotary, H. E. Deemer, and the man- aging directors are live men; thoy have good grounds, buildings and tracks; evory arrangemont pericoted, £5,000 or $6,000 offercd as premiums, and a number of the best horses in the stato engaged to be present, and as the crops are all good thero is every pros- pect of a grand success, NEW BUILDINGS have been going up this season, and among these we notice the new large brick, putup by A. O. Hinchman, nearthe south east corner of tho square, the new brick of O. P . Whittier, on tho east side, although Mr, Whittier has been called away by death durtug the past month, The new green house and coneervatory by Adna Hall, the the addition to the jail tc make proper quarters for fomale prisoners, and the estublishing of the gas works by an Indiana company who expect to give all the nocessary light to this city in a very few days. Among the new firms are Stewart Bros. who opens a full line of dry goods in the new Hinchman building. R. 8. Armstrong, who has taken L. D Hornaday’s drug store, retaining | mm Mr. E. C. Icwin, who has been in the store for ye rs, as manager; and the started a year ago by Mr, Wm. Beckor jr., who is a scholarly gentleman aund vinegar works all doin'v a large busi- ness, The water works are reported a com- ploie success since large and stronger hydrant posts, or plugs, have been put in, The fire department is deemed one of the best in the state, and Mayor Harris, an old fireman, takes great pride in the succees of the organiza- tion, They have a good hose com- pany which has purchased the Bates prize cart, won by the Denver fire de- partment at the National Tournament at Chicago, in 1878, and they propose to have a running team here, The stroet cars are leased to the Judkins Bros., and ate running regu- larly. Normal Institute begins next Mon- day, notwithstanding five of the city teachers have married during the sum- mer vacation, and two or three more not yet heard from, The 76,000 acres of railroad land in this county are taken by settlers, ex- cept & small remnant of broken or worthless land, and shows a strong and thickly settled country with near- 1y 20,000 inhabitants, of which this city haye nearly or quite one-fourth, Everybody seems to think the corn is almoet out of danger, native grown apples and onions are bringing seven- ty-five cents, and the abundance of excellent potatoes makes them plenty at 20 cents, POLITICS in Montgomery county is about like politics anywhere else in the nation, There are, however, some interesting items gleaned here. A well known political gentleman boasted the other day that he knew, last winter, who would be the congressman from the Ninth Towa district, and asserts that present republiean nominee will get a majority up in the thousands, The imprtant point I want to notice is in the selection, Did the republicans of the Ninth district seleot l\fn;urAndar- son, or was he selected last winter when he placed himself ‘‘all right' with the railroads by assisting them out of an unpleasant difficulty con- cerning free passes, The gentleman speaks confidently that the matter was sottled “‘“four months before the nom.- hm.tion was made.” That explains why it was “‘nnuccessary to call couvention because 1t was spontane- nuu," but we ask were the members of the convention who made the nom- ination wero vory satisfactorily cleared up by her frank statement that she would impose no restrictions upon the use of the property after the sale, coupled with the hopo that General Garfield’s library in which most of his best work was done, might be left substantially asit is, The committee appointed by the As- sociation to consider this matier found out some time ago that they could so alter the upper story of the mansion as to give them a roomy hall for their meetings, andas they desired nothi olse which the maunsion did contain, they were ready to bo eatiotied if Mrs, Garfield did not object to an adapia- tion of the houso to the purposes of the Assoctation. It seems probable that the Association will buy the man- sion, payingsomething like 15,000 for it, and will then convert it into a sort of Ohio club-house, It is not believed that thers will be much difficulty in raising the neoessary money. Thead- vantagos of auch headquarters as the association contemplates are obvious. In the lettor which Judge Lawrence, President of the Ohio Republlean As- BoCiabi received this morning from Mrs. Garfield, sho expressed her grate- ful appreciation of the kindly thought- fulnees of the nssociation in proposing to purchase and preserve the Garfield mansion She stated thatshe would imposo no restrictions upon its use, although she expressed ahope that the library might be kept very much as it is, Sho requested tho association to confer with her agent, General Swaim, as to all thedetails of the proposed transfer. Mrs. Garfield avails herself in cor- respondence of the franking privi- lege aceorded hor by congress, Poat. master Luse availed bimsolf of the opportunity t» immoralizo himself by postmarking this lettor with a big cir- cle ceataining his name as well us his postoffice.
