The Oouncil Bluffs Boys Drive Off the Blues of Leadville, Another Laurel For tho Home Nino Worthily Won. Yesterday afternoon the Leadville Blues and the Council Bluffs nine met again on the diamond field, and victory perched upon the banner of fhe home nine. The Leadvilles seemed determined to have everything their own way, and insisted on having as the umpire Traffley, of the U. P.'s, who umpired the game the day before in Omaha. To this there were very jusy objections on the part of the home mine, who thought that they ought at least to have one choice out of three games, in the matter of um- pire. The Leadvilles Vicked, and there was quite a little flurry of ex citement, but the Bluffs were stead. fast in olaiming their rights, snd refused to play unless granted them, which was finally done, and George Brown, of this city, was agreed upon as umpire, The Leadvilles made sev- eral kicks atter this, and served to mar somewhat the enjoyability of the game. The only one who escaped, Ed. Points, is still at large, He was not one of the most valuable prisoners, he being an amatour, snd there being about even chances for his having been cleared by a trial, 8o that it was rather foolish for him to make such a break. The sheriff has offered $30 reward for his capture, and officers are in pursuit of him, it being desirable to recapture him for the sake of the effect on other prisoners, rather than for the sake of having him to answer to the charge of larceny, which hangs over his head. An investigation of the attempted jail- break shows that there were seven at least who joined in the conspiracy. The prisoners concerned planned that when, the jailer came to take out the water bucket that they should rush out if possible, Points was selected a8 the one to lead the charge, as he was the one who generally passed the bucket to the Jailer, It was expected that the jailer .| would turn to cateh Point, which would give the others a chance, but Mr. 8houtz, instead of trying to catch him, pushed to the big iron door at once as far as possible, catching two of them between the door and the wall, and squeezing one so tightly that this prisoner is now on the sick list. Jailer Shoutz did well not to allow any more to escape, as he was only one against many, but by bracing him- self against the door, with his feet againat the wall, he succeeded in hold- ing his own, An effort was made to got from the prisoners the details of y whom and how the escape was planned, but they refused ‘‘to squeal” on each other, The sheriff ordered all the prisoners to be placed on bread and ter diet, as all seemed con. cerned, at least to the extent of soreening the chief oftenders. They were almost in a state of mutiny yes- terday, but quieted dewn during the day and contented themiselves as best they might on thia simple bill of fare, which is to be kept up tor five days, There will now be, probably, a ohange in the doors. At present there is hardly room enough between the doors to allow the jailer to lock the first door and swing open the second, “The attention of the ‘county commis- sioners was oalled to this defect, but they did nothine about it. Now the dodect will probably be remedied. The MKuropean restaurant opens Friday, Sept. lst. Moals served up in_first ¢lass style and at reasonable cos. Barra & MoOukx,2Pro) s, No. 404 way. The City Fathers Conclude it ia Time to Have a New Pen For the Unruly. Avrochitects Invited to Send in Thelr Bost Plans and Buggestions. Thero has been a long and pressing need here for & suitable city lock-up, The old pen in the rear of the city building is, like the city building it- self, a good deal of a farce. Prison- ers have escaped frequently, and those who did not escape would have been been justified in doing so, for the place into which they are tumbled promiscuously has been as filthy as it has been insecure. It has been al- most impossible to keep it clean, for no sgoner was it whitewashed and scrubbed out than ssme beastly drunks would besmear and bedaub it agai The accommodations have been #o acant that no discrimination could be made between those who were sober and orderly and those who were drunk and disorderly. The city fathers give promuse of a change for the better, and it cannot como too quickly. 1t is proposed to erect at once a jail on the property rocently purchased of Peter Bechtee, and to expend for that purpose about 5,000, The char- men of the finance committee, fire committee, and police committee, have been instructed by the city council to solicit plans, without cost, it being underatood that if a plan is adopted, it will be paid for ata reasonable price. It seems to be the intention to build this new jail on such a site and tn such a manner as to keep it entirely separate from the new city building, which it is to be hoped will be buiit at some eatly date, and the juil will be 80 looated that when it is thought best. to put up a city building there will be ground enough left and to spare. It is to be hoped that the move for a hetter city building and a new city lock-up will be pushed along to some practical resulte, and 1ot allowcd to drop into the same oblivion into which o mavy such promises made by aspiring local statesmen just before election, have evidently drop- ped. The present city building and caluboote are a disgrace to this oity, which ought to be wiped out. In the planning, the market house scheme should not be overlooked either. A big market place 18 wanted, especially by the working people, and their wishes should be recoguized. ST AR Best Chance to Make Money in South- west lowa. Musical Treat. This evening chere is to be a grand organ concert at the Congregational church, at which Prof. Falk, of Chi- cago, will appear. He is a great fa- vorite in the city of his home, where he has gained a high rank among the many musical celebrities who centre there. As organist of Unity church, at the close of almost every service there would be many who would re- tain their seats iwstead of passing out, and there liston evtranced until the last note from the organ had died away and wherevor it is announced there that he is to give an organ re- cital, the nouncement alone is enough to insure the presence of a large audience. He is certainly one of the bestin the taud. Mr. Penuell and hissister, Mies Ponnell, of Omaha, are to add still further to the attrac- tiveness of this musical entertainment by rendering vocal selectione. They have have already won praise here, and many will be glad to hear their voices again, The tickets are only fifty cents, and reserved seats are for salo at Bushnell & Brackett's.
