' THE DAILY RAILWAY INTELLIGENCE. The Union Pacific-Milwaukee Controversy Still Uppermost. Reported Alliance of the Bur- lington and D. & R, G. The new Milwaukeo 1 Omaha line continues to agitate the railway ar world toa coasiderable extent, and conjectures as to what is going to be dona about it are numerous. An agent of the pool line told a BEE xe- porter that the whole business was | on the to pot nothing more than a scheme part of the Milwaukee folks their line Jadvortisod free of cost and they are certainly succossfal if that is their object. The gontleman referred to is one of the oldest and most re the west, but he pool would doubt upun his liable railroad men in his connection with cast the shadow of a statoment, PIGHTING POR LIVE STOCK The Chicago Times says; now admitted by the officials of the Chicago roads that the Union Pacific railway company is not ivi with the 8t. Paul for the div the live stock traffic to the latter route, The officers of the St. Paul road complain that the Union Pacific is disoriminating against them in re- fusing to write through rates or issuo through bills, They have even gone 8o far as to invoke the interference of the pool lines in compelling the Union Pacific to accord the 8t, Paul the samg working arrangement as is vouchsafed its competitors, But the investigation has developed the fact, it is claimed that much the largoer part of the live stock shipments is coming eastward over the St. Paul's new line. Last Sunday soventy five car loads were dispatched from Council Bluffs, On Monday two trains were dispatched, On Wednesday 160 empty cara were standing at Council Bluffs awniting the delivery of stock in trans- it ovir the Union Pacific. The St. Paul management has been quietly drawing upon the Union Pacific for such men as could be of beuefit in se- curing the trans-Missouri cattle traf- fic. r, Olark, genéral superinten- dent, was the flrst one drawn from the Union Pacific staft. Ho was followed by the live stock agent and the man who issues passes to-live stock ship- pers, These threo employes, it.1s claimed, can control the liou's share of the live stock traflic of Nobraska and Wyoming.” STRATEGY ME BOY, ‘A strategic feature of the situa- tion is the fact, gathered from official sources, that the cattle men in Ne- braska are driving their stock from the Union Pacific ranges north to the Sioux Oity & Pacific railroad, and the theory is that concessions from tariff are being obtained from that line. The Sioux City & Pacific 18 operated a8 a direct connection of the &limo & Northwestern. Incidentally, there- fore; suspicion lodges against tho Northwestern, but_the ofticials of that company declare their innocence of any participancy in rate cutting in Nebraska, = Right here it may be said that the officials of the 2 ured cago & poollines that they have not uoted rutes from the Missouri river at loss than tariff.” G. i lA OENERAL nfimnl i leneral Manager Merrill, of the Milwaukes road, says: Tne Mitwau- kee & St. Paul did not build its Omaha liné for the fun of waging war upon its competitors, The line was built to earn money, and this could not bs done by inaugurating a war or cutting rates. There was not the least trouble or misunderatanding now be. tween the MilwAukee & 8t, Paul and the Towa pool lines, and his company has not yet been lYpmwhed in regard to joining the pool. The reporis re- B‘“flng a traffic_agreement with the nion Pacific, Mr, Merrill said, are as false ns the reports regarding a fight with the Towa pool. No such arrangement had been made or was ever thought of, All the Milwaukee & 8t. Paul asked of the Union Pa- cific was to be treated precisely the same as other lines connecting with it at Council Bluffs, THE NEW WESTERN ALLIANCE, The new alliance between the Bur- lington and the Denver & Rio Grande, as reported in Buston dispatchos to The Times, is regarded by railway officials as a combination offensive and defensive against the Union Pacific, It may be that when all the details shall be made public—and publicity of such things is now a foregone fact— the alliance will appear in an alto- other differant light, On first read- g, however, the opinion was almost unanimous among railroad men that o war of rates between the Union Pa. cific and the Burlington is next to in- evitable. They believe, too, that this arrangement proves the suspeoted pro&nuury interest of the Burlington in the Denver and Rio Grande,—Chi- cago Times Buckln's Arnica Salve, The Brsz Satve in the world for Outs o e, okt Chaprad, Fameie e or ‘etter, Chap) 0l Corns, and all skin Ively cures iles, It is guaranteed tc ve satisfaction or money retunded, 25 cents box, For sule b X gk gl N e B p— ‘THE COUNTY CONVENTION. "'Onp -More Unforfunate Gone to Her Death,” No. 1 engine; hou inct — Qualey Suicide of One of the Demi- Monde for Saturday’s Seneation, A young woman whose alliterative nom de plume was Lena Lott, but whoso real name was Lena Roberts, committed suicide, as is supposed, at her boarding house on Kighteenth stroet mear Cass, Friday by taking an over dose of morphine. The deceased came to Omaha in February last and since that time has become quite well-known as a woman of the town and to the police author- ities with whom she had become some- what involved, as well as by her testi- mony on the investigation of the oharges against city marsbal Angell, Friday, which is published else where. As seen on the witness ‘IMQ of ey on torn of respectable and well to do parents. She was of medium height and exceedingly well formed, with o very prepossessing and irtelli- gent countepance. She posseased a very fine soprano voice and had quite o good address and captivating do- livery, While in the council cham- ber yesterday she behaved ina most becoming manner and she could not be classed with the lower grade of wo- men of her class by any means, She was at home Friday as usual and sat out on the front porch of the cottege until quite a late hour, talk- ing with a cailer and seemingly in the best of spicits. Saturday moraing she was found lying on a couch in the front yard about 6 o'clock, with every gln tom of rapidly approachingdeath, . W, H. Lanyon was summoned, and after using the usual medical an- tidotes for poisoning, called Dr, Leisenring to his assistance, and both labored to save the life of the unfor- tunate young woman, but in vain, for at 10 o'clock she expired, The fact that she had been taking morphine Friday, together with her appear- ance that morning, the dilated pupils of hereyes, her heavy breathing, eto., all went to show that her death was caused by an overdose of morphine; The fact that she had been taking the drug Saturday and her apparent good -Kiriu Friday would seem to prove that the overdose might have been taken accidentally, but on the other hand the theory of suicide is borne out by an attempt wade on her life in February last, at whioh time she was saved by the prompt and skillful offorts of Dr. Lanyon, She/ ook morphine without oceasion, Tao deceased was about 18 years of age, and hoer parents are supposed to be residents of the state of Towa, though it is asserted that she ran away from Nebraska City last win. ter. Her fathor was in Omuha last week loaking for his wayward chil but she eluded his search. It is sai that she is & niete of Judge Field, of Council Blufs, but a telephone mes- sage sent that gentleman by the coro- ner, found him absent for home, Goroner Jacobs was notified about 11 o'clock of the death of the young woman, and proceeding to the house, empanelled the follow jury: ©, 0. King, P, Greenburg, W. wards, which, after hearing the testimony of the physicians and wit- nesses, found a verdict in accordance with the theory of suicide, The re- mains were then taken to Coroner Ja- cobs’ undertaking rooms, where they wili be held to discover, if possible, the whereabouts of her relations, Never Gi 1f you are suffering with low and de rossed spirits, loss of appetite, genera ebility, disordered blood, weak 'constitus tion, husduche, or any disease of & bilious ftture, by all ‘moans prooaroa bottle of Eleotrlo Bitters, You will be surprised to seo the rapid luiproyement that will follow] Jou il bo inspired with new lifo strength and activity will return; pain llui mrn-y will cease, and henceforth rejoice fn the pralse of Electric bitters.
