Temporary Hanging Fails to Ex tort Confession from Sup- pored Criminals Specinl Dispateh to Tuk Brw St Lovts, August 12 —Later dis Vn.»h.-. from Taylorville say that t crowds gathered around the jail | duting the evening, and up tof o'clock remained quiet, but after that hour they became dewonstrative, and some of the bolder ones under the influenc of liquor demanded the prisoner This was refused by the sheritf, but a short time afterwards more decided efforts wero wade t rison, and an entrance was finally made by force into the buailding. Tae sheriff then abandoned the jail and the mob pushed their way up stairs to the cells where the prisoners were con- fined, and took Montgomery and Pot- tis out through a hole in the top of cell and handed them over to the mob. A rope was quickly produced and thrown around thoe necks of the men. . Then mob then, by blows, threats and other means, endeavored to make th men confess, but without succoss. ‘They protested their inno- cence in the most earnest terms, The cry to hang them was then raised and the mob dragged the poor wretches from the building to the jail yard. Here another effort was mado to ex- tract the confession, but without get into the ayail. The men continuing to pro- test their innocence. They were then taken to the court hcuse yard, the rope adjusted to a tree, and Montgomery was pulled up about four feet from the ground and held there about one minute, when he was let down again limp and exhaust- ed. When he recovered sufliciently to = | speak, he asserted his innocence. ~ A. D. Bond, the father of the outraged girl, was then brought on the ground and another attempt to make Mont- gomery confess but he still maintained his mnocence as firmly as before. In the meantime Pettis had been treated in much the same wayas Moutgomery, but they could not obtain any- thing from him but protestatious of his inuocence. Up to this time the crowd had failed to find Clementi, but finally he was dis- covered, and he too was subjected to the same treatment, but without ob- taining a confession of guilt from him. Shortly after this a fire broke out in town, which had the effect of attract- ing a largs part of the crowd and the mob was practically broken up. Mr. Bond and the prosecuting attorney appealed to those of the crowd who had not gone to the fire to lot the men o to trial and have a fair chance for their 1ives. Thls had a mollifying effect on the crowd, and Mr. BonJ and the attorney took the prisoners back to jail, where they were placed in their cells The Hol Back Wreok: Spocial Dispateh to Titk Bxk, Waskca, Minn, August 11.—A serious railway accident and ono which will prove fatal to several par- tics injured therem, occurred near what is known as “Hog Back,” on the Miuneapolis & St. Louis railway, about four miles south of this city, be- tween 9 and 10 o’clock last night. Ho was oalled as a witness the contestant the spring of 1870 he entered iuto a very contemptible plot with the de cedent, by which it was agreed that after escorting to the theatre Mrs. Phillips and another lady living i the same apartments, he was to return with them, and, in the sight of hired dotoectives, employed for the purpose of aweariug to what they should ob serve, he was to appear at the door of the room jn half undress 8o as to givo color to the imputation that he had been criminally intimate with the de- cedent’s wife. Auris swore that this plan was in fact consummated; that he reccived from tae decedent the sum of $1,000 as a reward for his infamy, and that when he was asked to fulfill the conditions of his contract by making an affidavit for use of the decedent’s lawyer in the divoree liti- gation, he refused to do so.
