oz 2 — — FIRE AND WATER. The Electric Light Run by & Water Moter. A Very Pretty Sigkt Saturday Night. The use of the electric light, now substituted for gas in so many of our Western cities, including San Fran- cisco, Salt Lake City, Ogden, Denver, otc,, has thus far been limited in Omaha to a few individual cases, and hardly served as a fair experiment, Wherever used it has become very popular, being cheaper and furnishing a clearer, brighter and steadier light than gas. ‘I'he finest exhibition of the light yet soen in the city was that given in the cinity of Douglas and 14th Satur- day, that locality being brilliantly il- luminated from an_electric lamp, the enerator being worked by one of avis & Thomson's water motors, at the Omaha novelty works. ‘ A very beautiful and steady light was emitted from the electric lamp for over an hour, and it was demon- strated beyond the shadow of a doubt that the water motor as a power for operating the generator is a grand Bucces! The experiment Saturday was witnessed by a large number of persons, who all acknowledged that it was a succese. The motor used is a small one, fifteen inches in diameter, and using only twenty-six gallons of water « minute. It is a double tur- bine wheel, taking water from the center, discharging It butward through the periphery of the whoel, thereby gaining in connection with the impact or pressure the centrifugal action, which it is claimed will equal all loss by friction. The motor has been demonstrated to be far superior to any mnow in use, and saves sixty per cent, more water than any other. Saturday it was demonstrated that the motion of the water motor for the operation of the electric light generator js superior to thatof a steam engine, as the motor runs steadily and does not have the unateadiness of a steam engine. The light that was emitted Saturday burned very steadily, and was far ahead of any electric lights in Chicago, The ex- periment was mado for J. B, Fronch & Co., the grocers, to whom the elec- tric apparatvs belongs, They at- tempted to run it with asteam engine, but this proved very unsatisfactory. Now that the water motor has been tested and found to answer the pur- ose, they propose to at once put in a 4 inch double wheel motor to run three electric lights and an elevator at their grocery store. The job 18 to be done by the Omaha Novelty Works, of which Messra, Davis & Marcy are the proprietors, the above partnership having recently been formed. Mr. Davis, who has long been in the business, is one of the best machinists and mechanics in the country, and is also an inventor. The Davis & Thompson motor is partly his invention and property, and is destined to rapidly supercede its competitors. Owing to the fact that Omaha has a fine system of water- works, with a hgavy pressure, the motor is bound to come into general use here. Do Not Be Deceived. In theso times of quack medicine adver- aisements everywhere, it is truly gratify- mg to find one remedy that iy worthy of praise, and which really does as recom- mended. Elictrio Biiters we can vouch for as beiog a true and reliable remedy, ondone that will do_as recommended. They inyariably cure Stomach and Liver Complaints, Diseases of the Kidneys and pictured on her banner did the popular desire decido on individual representa- tion. In war times Charles F. had met such men, but in peace he con- fronted them more circumspectly. Says the stranger in return, *‘Is old Savage here!” The bland general replied: “If your remarks refer to Col. Savage, judge of the district court, and the only popular democrat in Nebraska, except James K. Boyd, T have to give a nega- tive reply 1 did not come in for a Latin lec ture,” satd the stranger. ‘I kinder herd that the jedge, or the colonel, as you call him, wanted to adopt a boy, and I brought him up four lively little roosters, Here they are.” Here Manderson quaverad, He found his old wound received ten years ago renewing its pains, In fact he was non-plussed, He did not know what to say in behalf of the Judge, who is now skirmishing on the New Hampshire hills, because he, Manderson, wasin the same boat him- self. Ho muttered a reply, however, about “‘Distance lends enchantment to the view,” ete. * Well,” said the Missourian, “‘take them for a time,” Then that Arabi Bey; of railroad matters, Mat Clair, who kappencd in, said: ““Pair of a kind beats a flush.” flushed, and as tho Missourian went Manderson’s pallid countenance then |* established in dcstitute places] 4. At present there is but little doing in the real estate market in Omaha, though the transactions in that line this spring far exceeded in number and money consideration those of any year previous in the history of our city. The comparative dullness at present is attributable, chiefly, to the season of the year rather than to any decided or marked falling off of the demand for city property. Contractors and build- ers are busy in all directions, but es- pecially in the suburbs, and the busi- ness review for 1882 will show the re- sult in a most gratifying way. Omaha is emulating Philadelphia in her chief characteristics as ‘‘a city of homes,” thus identifying her population with all her public interests, for in no way can & community become more active and alert in public expenditures and improvements than to have a monocy intorest in the property to be affected thereby. A very large number of the business men, mechanics and Iaboring men of Omaha are the owners of the homes they occupy and inmany instances young men of small incomes have invested their moderate savings in outside property during the past few years to find their financial condi- tion surprisingly improved by the gratifying increase in values of real estate our city has witnessed in the past eighteen months, The comple- tion of the St. Mary’s avenue street car line has brought into activedemand a large vxtent of residence property in the vicinity of Hanscom Park where, three years ago, Mr. Hanscom and otherlargereal estate ownera wereoffer- ing lots free to parties agreeing tobuild upon and occupy the same, with no takers. The improvament of Farnam street has attracted attention to the Drinary difficulties, We know whereof we speak, and can_readily say, give them atrial. Boldat fifty cents n bottle by C. F. Goodman. —_— ANDERSON'S ANS WER. The Board of HEducation Bkirmish Portends & War. The last meeting of the board of education was a rouser as far as talk was concerned, Especially was the word war pointed between Messrs, Anderson and Ferga- son. Their debale was on the loca- tion of the North school, on which the committee that has such matters in charge endeavored to censure Mr. Anderson. The latter claims that he acted perfectly fair in the matter, only doing what he ought to do as a commissioner, and might do as a citizen; that is recom- mend certain property as aschool site, Mr. Anderson also says that Mr. M- Shane and himself are totally ignored by the other four on the board, and they are not placed on committees at all, He is particularly strong in this opposition to President Long, Ina fow days Mr. Anderson says he will give the public the true inwarduness of some doing of our educational guardi- ans, While he maintains that he is in fa- vor of improvements and the necessary help to carry them to success, Mr. Anderson says that the present work on the high school ground is entirely without the meaning and spirit of the law. No contract was made in writ- ing, as the statutes require, and the heavy pay roll that monthly comes to the board, in his opinion, is illegal, With ovr police, common council and school board at sea, it is about time for some power to command the troubled muunicipal waters to be placid. nswer This. A Bold Attempt to Make an Orphan beautiful tract of land lying directly wost of the city proper, and the trans- fers which have taken place in that locality this season will bear fruit in tho way of new houses to be erected this fall and next spring by the parties purchasing, The experience this year of owners of real estate in the south- western part of the city shows the ad- vantage of street railway extensions and next year should witness more of this sort of enterprise. MERE AND THERE, Boggs & Hill have laid out their third addition recently, consisting of 8 ten-acre tract near the Sheely pack- Ing house. John I, Redick sold to Lyman Richardson last [week a piece of real estate on the south side of tho exten- sion of Farnam street, 140 feet front by 360 feet deep, for $4,000. Forty- one lots in his addition, placed in the market this spring, have been sold for an average of $1,2h0 each, He also sold afarm near Fremont recently for $7,000. Judge J. ¥. Morton has laid out an addition just south of the road to the poor farm, which he calls *‘Orange Grove place,” The old homestead of 0. B, Selden, consisting of 160 acres, has all been disposed ofin four acre tracts, with the exception of twelve acres. A. J. Huanscom has sold nearly 200 lots in his addition since last Novem- ber, An effort is being made to open Sheridan street from St. Mary's ave- nue to Faroam street, with a view of getting a line of street cars out on Farnam. F.elght Rates tc Omaha—A Cheeky Chicago Hd:tor. Mr. George H. Daniels, of the Towa Trunk Line association, has is- sied the following circular relating to the equalization of rates on salt: From and after August 10 the rates on walt in car lots to Council Bluftsand Omaha will be ns follows: From Detroit, 253 cents; Toledo, 22} cents; Chicago, 22} cents; East St. Louis, 167 cents; St. Louis, 14 cents; Haunibal, 12} centa. This circular cancels the rates on salt quoted from Detroit, Toledo and other points east of Chicago in the circular of August 1, 1882, STRIVING TO AGREE, It is ovident that another deter- mined effort is to bo made by tho Union Pacific, Burlington and Atchi- son to agree upon a pooling arrange- ment. The presidents of the three roads are at the east. They failed to agree last week, They are now sum- moning their managers to assist in bringing about a gettlement of differ- ences, Mr, Potter, of the Burling- ton, left yesterday for New York.
