The past few yoars have brouzht to Omaha more than the usual share of prrperity and have meen improve- ments made that transform our city from a mediocre frontier town to a metropolis which is recognized all over the Gireat West as tho city destined in future to wield a greater influence than any other in the trans-Missis- sippi country. With its constantly in- croasing railroad facilities, Omaha is every year becoming morein a posi- tion to claim precedence in many re- spects to the great cities of the east, and to show her power over the vast, rich country, as justly tributary to her an ever were vassals to a prince. As the city has experienced this un- precedenied growth of wealth and business influence all classes of her have prospered and none more 80 than her merchants, who have worked hard to buiid up their trade and intend to do more yot, aud so conduct their busi- ness as to cut off all eastern competition, the weatern dealers fast diecovering that it is to (heir in- terest to buy goods from this point, This had lod to & necessity for more convenient and commodious quarters for some of our firma, and thus to the butlding up and beautifying our streets, Among the many handsome and imposing structures which stand as monuments to the business success of their owners, none is more noteworthy than the splendid four-story brick structurc on Tenth strect, rceently completed and oceu- pied by the well known firm of Pax- citizens ton & Gallagher, wholesale grocers They havoe now, without ques. tion, the lurgest and the most suitablo grocery house in tho western country, and at the sate time a building that for beauty, convenience und utility cannot be beaten by any similar institution in Chicago or Now York, So say those who know. THE Bek reporter stupped in yes- terday and was gratified by an inspec- tion pf tho entire building and some- what ot the business transacted therain, and no better subject could possibly be desired to enlarge upon at this teason of the year. Once within the doors the report.r found himself in a spacious counting room, which occupies the full length front of the building, with the exception of a ten foot passage way for the city trade, being about 40 by 90 feet in size, The force engaged in the buying de partment are alloted desks in the south half of the room, while a row of elegant and attractive, sample cases with broad glass doore, lino the three sides of the opposite half, The two departments are cut oft from tho rear part of the house by a light wood and glass partition, which givea a full view of all the tran- sactionsgoing on, yet none of the ususl interruptions from bustle, Leaving the office and passing out into east half of the firet floor, the vast wareroom is found filled with sta les, sugars, cof- fees, teas, tobaccos, ote. A broad platform is con- structed here and trucks were buay the second floot, proper, of the same dimensions as the basement, is found to be the receptacle of fancy grocerics and caso goods of all kinde, groceries notions and cigars, The latter two articles havo an apartment partitione I for themselves, and another divis ion enciosed a smaller rocm, in whicl the smaller atticlcs aro packed for shipment. The thi d floor is used for light goode, wooden and willow ware, cord- o, twine and bagging. In short no go into de‘ails too much the house ia stored .om turrot to foundation sione with goods of the vartous hines handled by the firm and in srch order that 1t is no wonder that they are delighted with the change from their old quarters on the southeast corner of Farnam and Fifteenth streets, The new house just deecribed was begun last fall, the foundations being Iaid during the early part of the win- ter, ‘The design was furnished by Dufresne and Mendelrsohn, the archi tects, and it is certainly able to bear any amount of examination and then appear faultless, Oae of the managers eaid to the reporter that if he had the house to build over again, now that its conveniences have been thoroughly tested he would not alter itin a single particular. This is something few buildere on earth ever say. As all know, the firm doing business in this house, Paxton and Gallagher, are as popular and widely known as any in this city or country anywhere, Altough they have now been in the business juat throe years, that busi- ness, which was very large from the start was four times greater last year than during the first year, reaching the handsome figure of over two mil- lions of dollars. There are seven to ten men constantly on the road and twenty more employed in respon- sible positions in the house, while resi- dent brokers are kept all the time in Now York, Chicago and St. Louis, who watch the markets and are in daily communication with tho house by telegraph. The territory covered by the sales- men for Paxton & Gallagher is half of this enormons farm of Uncle Sam's, embracing Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Da. kota, Nebrasks, Kansas, Western Tows, aud all the country, in fact, west of the Missouri river. The firm is composed of Hon, Wi, A. Paxton and Benjamin Gallagher. The former, though not an active partner, is really the motive power of the great house. He is known all over the western country and in one of Nebraska’s most popu successful and wealthy men. Benjamin Gallagher, the active partner aund general manager of the vast aud important business is well and favorably known as anenterprising and successful business man, whose ability has been fully established by his twonty years work west of the Missouri, The buying is done under the super- vision of Mr. Robert Easson, and the counting-room is under the able man- & Gallagher’s mammoth wholesale house a man came running after the confidence man and told him the la- dies could not be put on the train un- til a balance of thirty-six dollars was paid. Tho latter request- ed him to keop mum, and exact- ing a promise that he would stop here on his return, from Glenwood, lowa, where he had to go to replemish his purse, the of ficer awaited deyelopments. Yes. terday when the 9 o'clock dummy came over Donahue nabbed his man and Brunson arriving at the same time, immediately identificd him as the sharper, Ho acknowledged the corn and wanted to settle, but was quistly scttled in the county jail to await a irial yesterday. The sharper is known by a dozen aliases, but yesterday he refused to give ang name. He is well known as a minis- terial looking old fellow, who is fre- quently on the trains and can be roadily recognized by a crippled hand.
