Some of one set were participating in the convention, which ought uot to be. W. R. Vaughan prosented some papers for the committee to consider, While the committee was deliberat- ing A. N. Harvey, of Neola, moved that a sommittoe be appointed on per- manent organization. Co1. Tam amended by making the temporary officers the permanent ones, which motion, owing to the modesty of the chuirman, was put to a vote by the colonel and declared carried, J. T. Hart objected to such action being taken before the committee on credentials reported and the chairman expressed his preference that the ac- tion be deferred until the committee reported. As for himself, he did not want to occupy the chair permanently, 09 he wr not feeling first-rate. The chairman of the committee on credentials broke the monotony of the waiting for the report, by appearing and stating that the following town- ships wero unrepresented: Center, Hazel Dell, Lincoln, Loawis Valley, Pleasant, Rockford, Waveland, Wright and York. Oredentials were called for from those in vain, and then an- other wait {ollowed, during which the delogates c'ustered in friendly chats about the spittoons. while J. T. Hart was, on his motion laid upon the ta- ble in front of the chairman, with whom he neld a confidential confer- ence. The bells announcing the noon hour brought the monotonous wait to an end, and hurried up the committee on cradentials who reported in regard to the contest in the First ward, favoring the admission of both sets of dulsgnteu, and giving each a half vote, On motion of J, C. Morgan, the re- port was adopted. The tollowing was the list of delegates. Kane—First ward, W. R. Vaughan, C. D Walters, F. Bonkempur, Nor- man Green, G. A. Holmes, James Wickham, J. M. Frainey amended by allowing the delegates to the congressional con- vention to give proxies, J. 0. Morgan moved to lay on the table, but it was declared lost. Mr, Morgan called for a division, There were seventeen in favor and fifteen against, and the motion to lay on the tablo was declared carried. Col. Tam arose to introduce a reso- lution on the temperance question, but sevcral suggested that it be not offered, on the plea that it was not tho time or place for such resolutions. While remarks were being informally tossed backwards and forwards over the table about this resolution, J. J, Frainey moved to adjourn, which we+ CAr About the only feature of sp:sial interest in connection with the con- vention was the underlying contest between, J. O. Morgan and W, R. Vaughan, who are known to be a sword’s points, But little of this cropped out in the convention propor, but it was shown strongly in the but- ton-hole and corner-whisperings and in the committee rooms, The matter was adjusted so far as the convention was concerned by leaving them both oub in the cold, the committees deciding not to gratify either of the gentlemen by choosing them as dele- gates. They were accordingly left like cats on the woodshed roof to fight it out, while the family remained inside the house, snnoyed of course by the noise of the wrangling, but not trying to tace the part of either. Dobbins and Hill, the two young men charged with vagrancy, did not appear yesterday morning. No one was disappointed, They were spotted as crooked men, and let out on their own recognizance in the hope that they would leave the city tor thecity’s good. Yesterday Hazen, ot Omaha, was here after them, and while hunt- ing for them a telephonic messngo from across the river was received stating that they had been arrested there for turning a $200 confidence trick, The young man arrested for enticing acolorod girl away from home for lewd purposes, was brought before Juctice Abbott and allowed to go free on good behavior, it being understood that if he didn’t break off his rela- tions with the girl, he would be put back into jail.
