Work is about to be begun on the railway from QGuadalajara to Lake Chapala. The Mexican government has accepted thirty kilometers of the line between Altata and Culiacan. The building of the railway across the Isthmus of Tehauntepec has been for some time suspended, and the con cession for this important work has been forfeited to the Mexican govern- ment, which has, with the view of re- commenecing construction of this line as a national work, appointed a com- mission of the most talented engineers of the country to examine the isthmus and report a8 to the best route and cost of completion. It is known by parties well informed that all the re- sources of the government will be brought to bear on the early comple- tion of this important read, which is regarded as of vital importance to the best commercial interests of Mexico, and will also be a competitor for the traffic which now passes over tho Pan- ama road, Already 122 milos of railroad have been completed trom Laredo south- ward, and only 48 miles more will bring the road to Monterey. On the Chihuahua to El Paso del Norte division of the Central rail. road 1,900 men are at present em- ployed, of whom 1,000 aro foroigners and 900 natives, The wages paid are 82 n day. There are many superior employes, mostly Mexicaus, who earn from £3 to $5 a day. Guadalajara will soon have a cir- cuit strect railway, which is now being actively pushed towards com- pletion. The Morelos railway, a Mexican road, has been purchased by the Vera Cruz Railway company, an Englich corporation. Coffee in Central America. Costa Rica began the cultivation of coffee in 1820, In 1830 the immense tracts of land to the south of the capital were sold on condition that only coffee treos would be planted, Stiil the cultivation has only slowly extended till recently. At present from 250,000 to 300,000 quintals are annually exported, The soil of the country is extremely fertile and the climato most favorasle tor the coffoe plant Labor and vapital are wanting and roads and means of transporta- tion in the interior are somewhat de- ficient. Nicaragua began to grow coffee in 1848, and now 4,500,000 pounds aro annualiy exported. The extension of the industry is much retarded by the want of labor and capital. The Mexican government proposcs to establish a navy at Mazatlan. The recently discovered coal fields of the state of Puebla are being worked very carefully, The coal is of an excellont quality and is being mined extensively. An American company has received a concession from the Mexican gov ornment for the estallishment of a line of light draught stemmners to navi gate the Mosola river, on the Pacific. The Mexican government has re scinded, all contracts for bringing Ttalian emigrants to Mexico, which measure has been rendered necessary by the undesirable class of emigrants aiready sent. The government has also refused permission to the differ- ent railway companies to employ Chi- neee labor in construction. Sunday morning the worshipers at St. Potor's church, Troy, were stak- tled by a heavy crash and the falling of plaster, lath, boards, and other materials, some jumping at the con clusion that the heavy tower had fall- on down. A regular panic eusued, and what followed was exciting in the extreme. Men ran esgerly here and there, looking for a place of egress; children eried, women sereamed, and many of them fainted away, and were in imminent danger of being trodden to death by the throng in their haste to gt outside of the building. When the crash firstcame many of the congre- gation started for tho door, but the pile of debris in the vestibule made them fancy that escape by that way would be oxceedIngly dangerous, Ac- cordingly they returned and made for the windows, but wire screens barred their way to (he street. A strange priest from Ircland was con- ducting the services, but when the panic commenced Rov. Father Lud- den, formerly of this city, the pastor of the church, with great presence of mind, ascended the pulpit and_spoke encouragingly to the people and tried to calm them, as it was apparent that a panic would onsue. Scon the people listened to him, and being assured they were safer whera thoy were thau in at- tempting to get out doors, they sat down and quiet was again restored. An examination was then made, when it was found that one of the ropes, not over an_inch in diameter, that held the bucket containing one of the 800- pound weights had broken, leiting the heavy mass fall 75 feet down, back of the orgar. The rope had been in use twenty years, and had rotted by time and wear. Notwithstanding the au- dience was a large one, and the ex- citement great, no one was seriously menced. The country is of unsur- passed wealth, but its fields are de- serted, its forests silent and 1ts har- bors empty. Salvador now ships 200,000 quintals annually, a quantity which may be doubled within a few years. Until recently the cultivation was almost en- tirely confined to the western part of the republic, but it is now extending to other districta. Honduras has so far scarcely grown enough coffee to supply her own wants and the article known as ‘‘Honduras” is in reality Guatemala. The govern- ment has passed a measure to exempt all coffeo plantations from taxation during ten years, and it is believed the imports of the state, amounting to 9,500,000 piasters annually, may be covered by the coflee exports within two years. Five milliohs of coffee trees have been planted. Guetamala, bathed by the two oceans and possessing the magnificent port of Santo Thomas de Caatillo, has a fertile soil and salubrious climate. Coftee constitutes its staple product, and the shipments arc now 289,762 quintals annually. Bofore 1855 very little was grown. Several railway lines are now heing surveyed or in process of construction, When the railways now being con- structed are finished, great improve- ments and extensions in the cultiva- tion of coffee in Dexico may be expected. The present export is about 4,000,000 pounds aunnually, shipped almost entirely to the United Staten, The culture wes introduced in 1828, and is now carried on in the states of Chiapas, Colima, Michoacan, Vera Cruz, Tobasco, ete. Colima coffee is well-known in all the mar- kets. The government and planters are making every exerfion in their power to extend tho cultivation and unprove the product, An agri tural society is established in the City of Mexico, to which most of the planters belong, and a weekly paper is published in their interest. It is very much to be regretted that the relics, which show the height to which the brilliant civilization of the Toltecs reached, should be threatened with complete destruction, so that in a few years there will be no traces of the magnificent Colhuacan, the Thebes of America, as that city has been 8o justly called by the ‘most illustrious uavelers.” In view of the foregoing the govern- ment is taking measures for the pres- ervation of those ruins and relics of a former and almost unknown civiliza- tion, which have excited such univer- sal interest.
