There aro no certain signs as to just when a colony will swarm, so far as outside indications will show, more than the clustering of bees on the out- side of the hive, and the hanging of poilen herers with the cluster out- side instend of entering their hive, but by examining the frame fre- quertly, watching the progreas, one can soon tell when they are about roady to cast a swarm, and as soon as the queen colls are about ready to cap over is the best time to divide. Proba- bly the safest and easiost way to vido is, as soon as they are ready, io lift out the frame, b brood, and all, on_which the queen is found place this frame in the new hive, fill- ing out with frames of comb or founda- tion, or, if you do not ha her, fill out with empty frames. Now place the new hive con queen or old stand, movii 6 to a ining the ol old h this 1 location. By plan you throw nearly all the working bees where the most work is to bedono in the new hive, and they will proceed to work the same as though they had swarmed naturally. But if the old bees had made up their mind to awarm, and you had loft a_queen cell on the frames you had placed in the new hive, they will sometimes swarm anyhow, so you will notice to tear them down, 1f any exist, befora closing them up. The brood in the old hive hatching out very rapidly will soon muke a good colony., The space in the old hive from where you removed the same d with comb or founda- pty frame be placed will fill it with drone seldom make anything while without a iaying queen. Bes Moines Correspondcnce of ths Chicigs Tribuue, Tho other evening T was in convor- sation with an old army ofticer who fought in the Army of the Pctomac through the war of the rebellion, and commanded a battery a large portion of the time. His acquaintance among the oflicers and the men extended over a large circle, including some of the since most noted men. Among th was Gen, Custer, whom he could not praise oo highly as a brave and gallant officer. Capt. Hazleton of Rochester - for 1t was he who talked to me—told an accident of Custer which illustrates the nervous temper- ament of the man, sml his sensicive nature; for ho was a sensitive spirit who could not bear injustico himself, ard somo day the circumstances which led to his death may be cleared up ina way that will not reflect honorably upon some high i power in the time it occurred Capt. Hazelton could relate inci dents of the war 2s interesting as a novel. He himself carries a builet in his face which annoys him much, and still he has never applied for a pension, Said he, “When I cannot make living without, then I will ask Uncle Sam to help me, and not before,” on has carried the bullet back of his upper law —where it ocea sionally breaks out in a terribly dis- agreeable abcess—all over the Rocky mountains from Santa Fe to Montana, and from Puget sound to the gulf of California; and he also carries two other gun-shot wounds, ‘It was one night on the ann )mnuu«k, in the winter of '62-3," said Capt, Ha verybody 'knows the circumstance of Custer's promo- tion to a generalehip over officers who ranked him, Of course it created lousy, und there the brave g officer, who would have bee greatly adwmired, but for his rapid ac vance, even by those who now in their jealousy could see no betier course Custer was not a blind man, and of course keenly felt the jealous opposition brought to bear agaiust him, One night a number of officers were visiting at Custer’s camp, and passing & pleasant evening, While the festvities were ot their height and was 1ing against IOWA ITEMS |every one was enjoying 1 Now cnses of small pox continue to | ofderly rode up with a commn ovelop in Davenport for Gen, Custer, Tho genc » late storme have given the tor.
