Bur- nett published in The Republican of the 9th inst., is made easy by the kind and prompt courtesy of several gen- tlemen to whom I wrote for evidence. My only difficulty is an embarrass- ment of riches, The lotters are so full that T am compelled to abbreviate somewhat, but I have left out no im- portant point. The letters are pub- lished in the order in which they were received., The first is from & gentleman well- knewn to me, a successful ‘wholesalo dealer in hardware, C. L. Baum, Esq. He writes as follows: LixcoLN, Neb., May 12, 1832, Rev, O, CLure ~Dear Sir: Your letter and Towa City Daily Repablican of May Oth, at haud, * * ¥ The Juniata matter was a charge made by one member of the lodge there, and published. The letter re- forred to was signed ‘Bird”. Not long since the Junita Lodge was sus- pended from the Grand Lodge for ‘‘contempt and malicious slander;” the whole cause based upon this charge against Fiach. All of which 1 will send you by early mail, as pub- lished proceedings of the Grand Lodge, and in other forms equally an- thoritive, The Lincoln Daily Dom-crat pub- lished at one time & charge that John B. Finch had *‘made improper pro posals to a young woman, and wrestled with her on the lounge.” Mr. Finch sued The Democrat for libel at $10,- 000 damages, which case has never some to trial. The young ludy to whom reference was made, made oath before our present county judge, & copy of which I will also mail you, ut- terly denying the charges, and in sub- stance completely exonerating Mr. Finch. This is all that has appeared upon any court records in this city in the above matter, and Mr. Kinch was never made defendant in a bastardy and seduction case, but was plaintiff in a libel swt against The Daily Democrat, growing out of the above rumor, Saffice to say, the woman in question never had cause for bastardy against any one, Mr. Finch islooked upon here by the better class of pecple as an excel- lent man, ana sustaius an enviable reputation, The men whom Mr. Burnett repre- sents, by his published letter, are here, as well as elsewhere, loud in their denunciations of Mr. John B. Finch. Very truly yours, C. L. Baum. The second letter is from a dentist, long a resident of Lincoln, well aud honorably known: Lincorw, Neb,, May 15, 1882, REev. O. CLvre —DEeAR Sir: Ycurs of the 12th inst., is received. The copy of The R:publican which you speak of sendiog me, has not yet reached me, therefore am not advised definitely what the charges referred to are, but presume they are the slanders of two years ago, published in The Lincoln Democrat at that time, with the usual additional accamulations of falsicy and filthiness that time and distance lend to such infamous slan- ders. That paper published an article to the effact that a young lady living in Finch's family had been improperly approached by Mr. Finch, and im moral advances made to her, eto., but charged nothing criminal as the result, Mr. Finch commenced at once against the then editor of The Democrat for libel. The case in the courts yet; the defendant never being ready for trial has «btained a contiuu- ance from time to time on one pretext or another. I think it will surely come to trial at the next term of court. Nobody here believes there is a shadow of truth in it at ail, unless it be the liquor dealers, and I cannot believe they do in their hearts. In fact the young lady made aflidavit that it was the basest falsehood, and that Mr, Finch never acted anything but the perfect gentleman toward her. There is noubt but that it was gotten up, and is continued in the interests of the liquor traffic. The standing of Mr. Finch here at home cannot be illustrated better than it was the last time he spoke in our city, early in January last. Ourlarge and commodious Opera house was lit- erally packed, and many went away who could not get standing room. Enclosed I send you editorials of our eity papers in regard to the revi- val of the scandal in your state. Yours respectfully. 8! H. Kixa, The editorial mentioned by Mr. King was from the Lincoln Daily News of May 13th, and from the Daily State Journal, of Lincoln, of May 14, They are too long to gnote at this time in full. Here is what the News says of Mr. Burnett's statement ‘::rzlhe Jcase of ‘seduction and bas- ‘“Such infamous, bare-faced false- hood should never find a place inu respectable paper, yonly te condemn the vile hypocrite who originated it. It is unnecessary to say rthat it is a slanderous lie, that no one who has any regard for truth or honesty will give utterauce to, and yet he com- mences in erder to give colorto his slander, by saying he is a ‘minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ.” Wouder if Christ has many such ministers.” The Daily Stato Journal, referring to the same case, says: It need not be said in Lincoln that the assertion that he was openly charged by The Scate Democrat with criminal intercourse with servant girls on several occasions, and that it pub- lished affidavits to support the charges is willfully, absurdly and inexcusably untrue. r. Finch is, however, am- ply able to fight his own battles, and when he gets home he will doubtless be heard from, The mext is from the Hon, O, P, Mason, ex-chief justice of Nebraska, He says: Lincory, Neb., May 15, 1882, Rev. O. CLure - Dear Bin:—Your letter of the 12¢h inst., and paper containing the statement of the Rev. 0. Compton Burnett in regard to John B. Finch, 1s received and read. There is no truth in the statements made bxy the Rov. C. Compton Bur nett, The whisky interests in this state have spared no labor or money to scandalize John B, Finch, but so far their every statement, reflecting upon his character as & man, has been ropeatedly proven to be false. The Arnand Lrauwal, v ot o teee 2 Juniata Herald statement s false, and has been proven to beso. No such letter was ever written by John B. Finch, as all who desire to know the truth well know. The State Journal, of Lincoln, while under the manage- ment and control of Vietor Vifquain was the liquor men’s organ in this state. The Weekly Journal, of Platts. mouth, did publish a scandal us libel and falsehood on John B. Finch, on the ocoation of his visiting Platts- mouth with Gov. 8t. John, (f Kan- sns, Finch assaulted the editor, and whipped him at the time, and the citi- zona of Piattsmouth, good men and true, promptly paid the fine and costs. and ail decent people felt Finch did right in whipping the editor. The State Democrat published a libel on Finch, charging him wi'h inproper advauces to some servant wirl. A st for libel was commenced, and at ench term since Finch has been ready and pressivg for trial, and the de fendauts have upon one pretext and another secured a continuance. You will find ail these chargas aganst Fiach are false. ® i hy No truthful citizen of this state, no one who knows the facts or who de. sires to speak the truth but will tell you and «ll men that this stutement of Rev. C. Compton Burnett is false and uutrue, a tissue of falsehoods woven by the liquor interest, and the web presented to the public through the Rev. C. Compton Burnett, % * To me 1t is an appalling spectacle to see a olergyman of the church -the church to which my family belong, aud which I respect more than auy- thing, standing in defense of these crimes, as if they were the ark and covenant of civil and religious liberty. Which of the pmpfiau have they not persecu- ted even unto death? ‘‘He that is not for me is againat me.” He that is not for prohibition absolute, is for the continuance of this great imiquity. The liquor interest realize and appre- ciate the fact that it 18 the character of the man that gives power and cfoct to his words, and herce this effort and use ot falsehood, scandal, and malic- 10us vituperation te break down and iniure the character and reputation ot John B, Finch, Their effurts have proved a signal failure in Nebraska, and they will be 8o in Iowa. The wrong cannot long prevail. It may gain a temporary advautage but in the end its failure must be fiual and com- plete. ‘L here is 1o staiu or taint upon the character of John B, Fiuch. He is a worthy man. Yours truly. 0. P. Masow. Having heard that Mr. Finch had commenced suit aguivst the editor of the Lincoln State Democrat for libel, a letter was sent to the oclerk of the county clerk there asking for facts. His reply follows: LincoLN, Neb., May 12, 1882, Deak S1k: Yours of the 10th inst., at hand. In reply would say thatthe case of Finch vs, Vifquain stands for trial in this court, nut yet having been determined upon the merits. I know nothing agaiost the charac- ter of Mr. kinch aside from the slush published sometime sgo 1n the col- umns of the State Democrat in this city, and on account of which the li- bel suit is now pending. Very truely yours. J. 8. DaLes, Deputy Clerk, District Court, Lancas- ter County, Nebraska. H. . Lett, a prominent grocer of Lincoln, spaaks briefly, but to the point. Hesays: LincoL, Neb, May 15, 1882. Rey. O. CLUTE - DgaR S1x: L looked over all that your paper ¢outsined in refereuce to John B. Finch. I have known him a long time. I have never heard any one, that had a character of his own, say a word agsinst Mr, Finoh’s moral character. These old charges have long been stale. I know of no moral person in the state who tolerates for ane moment the truth of these charges. They have, as I hsve rcason to know, iuvestigated the charges fully, and have unani- mously exonerated him. He can, in this city, at any time, commaund the largest ccowd of hearers of any man in Nebraska, if annocnced that he is going to spesk. All these charges I believe to be a strike at the cause of right. Mr. Finch has been for many years an active worker among the Good Templars, where he has held the high- est offices, The executive committee of the Nebraska grand lodge thus speaks of him: Eprror RepusLIcAN: We see in a lata issue of your paper & letter writ- ten by one C. Compton Burnett against John B. Finch, of this state, We, as the executive committee of the grand lodge of Good Templars of Nebraska, of which lodge Mr. Finch was grand worthy chief two years, and was unan- imously elected z)r the third term, last Jauuary, but refused towork long- er, beg leave to state to your readers that we have known Mr Finch for five years intimately. We also know that that portion of Burnett's letter re- ferring to seduction, bastardy and crim- inal prosecution is wilfully and wholly false. Mr. Finch has never been churged wich bastardy in this state or elsewhere, until that whisky advo- cate, Burnett, who says he received a thousand dollars for fifty lectures, and five dollars a day for expenses from the liquor association of Iilinois for lecturing 1n the whisky interest, has made the charge; nor has any civil prosecution been entered against Mr, g‘mch. Weo deeply regret that it has been reserved for a preacher to descend lowest of all the vulgar traducers of this most effizient temperance orator. Two or three years ago The State Dumocrat, of Lincoln, Neb , published an article against John B, Finch, for which Me. Finch sued iws editor for 810,000 for libel, which suiv is put off from time tc time at the request of the defendant. Mr, Finch moved an investigation of the charges made by the Juniata Herald, in his own lodge, and was most fully acquitied on all points. At the Grand Lodge he was most fully endorsed by the temperance people of this state, and after living here for five years and speaking in Lincoln a hundred tiwes, he was again asked to spoak, and notwithstanding an ad- wittance fee was charged at the door, the opera house was crowded with one of the largest audiences that ever was seen in this city, Tell your people that the Honorable John B, Finch is a gentleman, and worthy the full con- figenos of all good men and women, We regard John B. Finch asthe strongest leclurer, in this or the old world, on temperance, i Bethesda BATHING HOUSE! At Bryant’s Spring, Oor. Broadway and Union Sts. COUNCIL BLUFFS. T, hereby declare that Brother John B. Finch has been a member of this lodge for three years; that he has al- ways borne the character of a moral Christian gentleman in this city an throughout the state, and that the foul slander published by Compton Burnett as an advertisement in the Towa Oity Daily Republican against him, is in ovar:urnrficuln false, and is evidently a icious lie, manufac- tured in the interest of the drunkard- making fraternity, against whom Mr. Finch hasalways waged an earnest an effeotive warfare. W, C, T, It will be seen frow the above let- ters and editorials that Mr. Finch's character is above reproach, The at- tack made upon him in Towa City was based upon old rumors, the falsity of which any one could have learned if he had cared to know. I ask all thoughtful voters to consider if a| party that resorts to such base meth- ods ot warfare is worthy of support. Will you support men and measures, that, faili. g in argument, resort to the most unblushing falsehood and concoos the vilest scandals against men of known integrity? The election will soon be here, It is for you to choose whom you will serve. The Lempernno«.reopla of Johnson county will probably give no further attention to these statements agai Mr. Finch, nor to statements of sim- ilar character against any advocates of prohibition, They are aside from the main issue, The question isin regard to prohibition, For that we want the help of every voter in the state. Men of all sects and of no sect, of all politi- cal parties and of no party, born in our own land or of nationalities be- yond the sea, will you not vote for this measure that will put money in your pockets, peace and order upon your streats, prosperity and industry in your homes! 0.
